Has anyone guessed Chocobos, or the Chocobo game? Fairly obvious reasoning. Treasure, you "level up your chocobo", you start it in Lindblum (ish), it can be hard to miss when looking through the telescope. That's about it really. The rest doesn't tie in, but at least I'm knocking another one off. xD
I'm trying to figure out what you mean by "headed linearly forth". Possibly something directly above Lindblum on the map?

"Headed linearly forth" is pretty much what it says, as a part of the line of "events" in the second stanza. Consider its first line especially.

You make it sound like the Swamp area where Quina is found.
Because if you head north to Burmecia, you come across the swamp area that can be easily missed. And related to a mini game? Something with frog catching?

Maxamising potential could mean the more frogs you get the more powerful Frog drop is.

Heading linearly forth does not mean moving northward from Lindblum or heading towards Burmecia. It's not the frog catching game or related to it.
