trance only happens to characters who are yours forever (the eight ppl you can get). Trance happens when your characters trance gauge reaches full, theyre attack power is increased, and they can do some really sexy moves (zidanes dyne...*drools*). You get the trance bar up by being attacked, everytime an enemy attacks you, you get little more trance bar-ness. However, the story of trance is that its induced by a sudden surge of emotion, but seeing as moogles are smarter (remember? after leaving the evil forest? god i love that moogle...) the whole "surge of emotion" thing is just put in so you can see that zidane loves garnet.
