If you think about it, your new funky ways of saying lieutenant as if there wasn't an "f" is far more awkward and unheard of. Letters are meerely symbols with assigned pronounciations.
Point in case:
w is pronounced v in some languages.
k is pronounced ghhhhhhh in another.
Furthermore, pronounciation differs from city to city, state to state, country to country. So really, that detail is obsolete considering spelling which should excercise uniformity through out all English speaking communities.
But it doesn't.
So meh.
