    Default Foreign Languages

Something that I've noticed, in Britain at least, from statistics and from generally speaking to people my age is that there's a real lack of interest in learning foreign langauges (Japanese seems to be an exception), so I thought I'd see if this was reflected here.

What languages do you speak? What languages do/have you studied?

I speak English as my first language, and I'm doing German as my second language for my International Baccalaureate course and would love to be fluent. I've also studied Welsh for a number of years, though my knowledge of that is dire, at best.

I can only speak English. I know a very small amount of French from taking French a few years, but that's getting even smaller, as I forget a lot of it.

I grew up with quite a few languages: English, Danish and Tagalog. Today, I only know a very little Tagalog, but I do speak English, Danish and some Irish. ^^

The same thing has happened with my Welsh. I went from having two lessons a week with a good teacher to having one joke of a lesson my Welsh got rapidly worse. A real pity, I think, even if Welsh isn't all that useful.

Someone told me feces is a language, and also that I speak it. It made me proud.

I used to study Indonesian and used to be able to speak it a little. But I've forgotten it all now.

You're doing IB!??!! Ah! Best of luck. I've heard it's hell.

I have studied Malay, and I study French. It hurts me in a very personal way.

I speak two Indian languages besides English, but I'm illiterate in both. (Such a nasty word, illiterate. It makes me feel bad!) And...uh yeah, I'm English literate, fortunately.

I speak English. And I did 3 years of French at school, until I got to year 10 and dropped it, I only remember little bits.

I took French in HS, but unfortunately all I remember is how to say my name...
I do know some Latin, basically enough to insult people.

In our Religion, we have several classes devoted to teaching new languages so that our message can be spread to all different races of people. Britain is so diverse these days that it's impossible to preach to everyone because there are so many different languages out there, and that's why we've taken the initiative to learn their tongue.
"As the days go by, we face the increasing inevitability that we are alone in a godless,
uninhabited, hostile and meaningless universe. Still, you've got to laugh, haven't you?"

I just speak English fluently, but I'm learning Swedish and German. Swedish out of choice, and German at school. I'm tired of it.
