The new school of thought actually is going to be adding 1 state: Solid, liquid, gas, and glass. Glass can be made out of most matter from what I understand. It just so happens that sand and other mineral make glass feasably more sturcture at normal temature. This was linked off slashdot a while back.
Therefore, glass is really not a liquid or a solid; nor is it simply transitional. It is a state that developes its own tendancies.
