JPG doesn't have a very wide color range, so it tries to mix the colors in the tiny gridsquares you probably have visibility turned off on to recreate the colors. This often causes colors to change after saving and also strange lines to appear in the JPG. The mixing of the colors causes it to compress. That's why if you constantly save a jpg over and over again after adding something it will continuously look worse and worse after each saving.
