Harvest Moon for 'open ended' game, or Oblivion for an 'open ended RPG'. Oblivion isn't on PS2 though, if you're still looking for PS2 only games.

There are no good shooters on the PS2, but I guess the best of the bunch would be SOCOM.

Im ok with comp games too. Fear kicks ass, but the single player is kinda scary. its the frist game that made me stop playing from freaked out ness.

I've played through all of fear...and its no freakier than doom 3, just really really weird...I'm playing on getting the expansion but if you don't have the original I suggest you pick it up.
