Whedon's original plan was for a total of three movies if Serenity did well enough, with appearances from all of the main characters no less. It would be quite easy to do a sequel with the remaining characters anyway, but it would have been nice to see the others appear. Sadly, I doubt we'll ever see a sequel.
Meh, it's sci-fi. They could resurrect them if they liked. We're not talking about "War and Peace" here.
