The thing is, once the game gets going, Vaan barely gets a word in edgewise over the likes of Ashe and Balthier, the former of whom flat-out tells him not to interrupt her at one point. It's very much as if Matsuno and company had just as much contempt for the character type as players do, especially since Square executives forced them to put him and Penelo in the game.

And all that makes him much more bearable than jerks like Tidus, whom you must constantly tolerate for the entirety of their games.
