(SPOILER)They are completely wrong about the fact that they can't change time. I can bring to mind several instances where the ability to change fits more than the idea that they can't. Rousseau didn't remember Jin because she never met him. Desmond didn't remember meeting Faraday because he hadn't. etc. Some things did seem to have already happened though, such as Locke meeting Alpert.
