Thread: Akira Yamaoka

    Default Akira Yamaoka

Excuse me if this board isn't for general video game music. I listen to way too much Silent Hill music. I mean on a smurfing loop. Sometimes all day. Not only that but like remixes and stuff by other people. Help me. I have an unhealthy obsession with Akira Yamaoka.

Well, your screen name is appropriate, at any rate.

Silent Hill 2 has one of the greatest soundtracks ever, of all time. In the game, the dynamic sequencing of the music is incredibly effective at getting your heart racing as you step cautiously down a pitch-black hallway and begin to hear the inevitable abominations shuffle nearer. When you're in a "safe" location, it's just as good as soothing you into a temporary state of calm. All the compositions are more than formidable enough to stand on their own, outside the game's context, as well. My favorite tracks are probably "Theme of Laura," "The Darkness That Lurks in Our Mind," "Laura Plays the Piano," and "Betrayal."

The only other Silent Hill game I've played has been Origins, which also has some great tracks (see "Shot Down in Flames" and "Not Tomorrow 4"). I'm currently looking forward to Yamaoka's work on Silent Hill: Shattered Memories.

The grungey, noisy, guitar-shredding stuff he did for Contra: Shattered Soldier is pretty abysmal, though. I guess no one's perfect.

Laura Plays the Piano and Heaven's Night are my two favorite tracks. Silent Hill 2 does have the best soundtrack in my opinion, followed closely by Silent Hill 4. My obsession with Prisonic Fairytale comes from how it made me feel in the game, so atmospheric.

Absolutely. I listen to it while working sometimes, and it really makes me feel at peace for some reason.

My favorites are: Promise (Reprise), Alone in the Town, Fermata in Mistic Air, True, Betrayal, and Black Fairy.

Akira Yamaoka is among my select favorite composers.

Hell, I'm yet to PLAY Silent Hill but have purchased 1, 2, 3 and Origins' OST.

I highly recommend the games, especially if you enjoy the music that much.

I was so impressed with the soundtrack to the SH movie I tried to track it down, only to find there wasn't one. So I went to FYE and downloaded the first four game soundtracks and edited together a playlist, in order, as they appear in the movie. Minus Ring of Fire and the final battle music.

Having reached the games belatedly through the movie, I was struck by how the same pieces of music worked well in different contexts. Wounded Warsong was standout in this regard, both in the game and movie.

I'm unsure if there was ever an actual physical soundtrack.

But there's a "Silent Hell (Music from the Silent Hill Movie)" available on iTunes. Akira's name changed to "stanton shows" ... I think it's a rip.

As far as I know there has never been an official ST to the SH movie.

I heard about Silent Hell, but I also heard the quality is extremely poor.

Not poor, as in quality poor.

    Poor as in, it's directly ripped from the film :{

Piracy issues aside, I don't care for that sort of thing because of the ambient sounds, voices, and sound effects detracts from the experience of just listening to the music.

Hell yeah, Akira Yamaoka is a beast. "Promise (Reprise)", "Alone in the Town" and "True" are some of my favorites.

His non-Silent Hill stuff is really good too, though.
