Of course, this from the one who thinks Twilight is a quality vampire movie.

Ah yeah true that. I was massively surprised by how great that movie is, it looked like typical teen crap bollocks and turned out to be pretty damned unsettling and awesome.

And yeah The Thing is pretty gory but that sort of adds to the whole thing because it's not gratuitous torture porn or whatever, it actually... you know... makes sense in context and adds to the movie. xD

And if we're talking about vampires then really, we only need to talk about From Dusk Til Dawn.

I'd say The Thing is pretty gratuitous to me. Although it definitely adds to the whole experience. The gore is probably the only thing that qualifies The Thing as a horror film as the film is hardly scary. On the subject of body horror, The Fly is required viewing.

Its funny you say that because I always felt that the vampire aspect of the film really brought it down. It just seemed kind of unnecessary considering they had a pretty solid script before they introduced the vampires. Then it just seemed like an episode of Buffy after that. If we're talking first rate vampire films, then look no further than The Lost Boys.

Correction: There are a lot of vampire movies out there. Not a whole lot of really good ones, though.

The Thing is the greatest examination of paranoia in human history. It's better than being a spy in the freaking Cold War. But you're right that gratuitous wasn't the word I was looking for - more, that the violence serves a purpose.

30 Days of Night is a pretty beastly vampire flick as well. It didn't scare me, but it was highly entertaining. I was impressed with Josh Harnett's performance. It's probably the only movie I can say I liked him in. Ben Foster is another notable mention.

The Thing isn't really a scary film, but it's one that I really enjoyed watching. It's the paranoia and psychological stuff that goes on that makes it a good film, not it's ability to scare. I liked how the audience is made aware of things that the characters are not and how that plays within the dynamics of the film.

Edit: Also, I don't think it's been suggested yet but 28 Days Later is a quality film.
Not my words Carol, the words of Top Gear magazine.

So how did scary movie night go Raistlin? I hope you did watch The Thing. It is very gory but it's also amazing. The director was at the top of his game and the performances were excellent. Do let us know how it went regardless.

He's good in almost every movie he's in though.

It's not until next weekend. I was just planning on figuring out what movie(s) to watch by tomorrow.

There are some very effective creepy films that use a minimum of gore: Ugetsu, Eyes Without a Face, and Peeping Tom all create dread by implying violence instead of just showing it.
