But they're there purely as fan-service. Can you honestly tell me the Final Fantasy characters played an important role in the plot of the Kingdom Hearts games (with the exception of maybe Squall)?

Kingdom Hearts was supposed to be a crossover between Disney and Final Fantasy, not Disney and Final Fantasy VII (and friends).
