It can work depending on what kind of relationship you are after. However, I would say a better saying would be "Don't treat them like you NEED TO BE WITH THEM AT EVERY MOMENT, keep them keen." Basically, don't get clingy, because eventually they'll just want to distance themselves from you. They're more likely to be interested in you if they don't have you wrapped around their little finger already.
