I think both games are great. In fact, I'd say they are my top two favorite FF games in the whole series. I am drawn to 7 a bit more. I like the customization of the Materia system, even though in 6 everybody can learn any magic and keep the spells even without the Esper attached. 7 was also the first FF game I ever played, so that may have something to do with it, too. If I'd started with 6, I might say that one is my #1 favorite.

6 certainly has one thing going for it that 7 doesn't: Economizers! Casting Ultima for 1 MP can't be beat.

I roll my eyes. I mean, who gets caught up in these debates? Why do people get at each other's throats over which game is superior?

And then someone says that FFVII is crap and that FFVI is better and I'm all "What!?" and I tell them why they're wrong in no less than 1,000 words. That'll learn 'em!

I would never begin to suggest one is superior to the other. I like them both, but I think I like 7 a little bit better.

If you've read articles about the seven stories that rule the world then you know that there's really no new plot. People have tried but adventure/fantasy genre falls under one of the common categories.

It's pretty easy to imagine a villian wanting to destroy worlds. The Covenant in Halo and countless other fictions. It's all in the presentation. Because Kefka and Sephiroth as well as other characters are involved with familiar settings allows us to easily relate imo.

I'm sure we've read many stories that are outright off the wall. It's all in the preference yet Final Fantasy tries not to dissapoint.

I'm with you here. I really want to call VI the best game in the series, but I just can't because I really am not all that high on the Esper system. I think VII got the blank slate concept a little more right in not forcing the player to attach Espers and grind to have characters learn abilities. In VII, the battle system is Materia, and the characters and weapon/armor slots are just there for you to work out a really cool combination. VI isn't entirely blank slate because every character has their own abilities - but, again, I still feel like there's way too much busy work to make some of the more fun characters effective. Using either Blue Mage in VI (Strago and Gau) feels like it requires the player to go out of his way to make those characters effective.

Anyway, answering the thread: I never feel like there's a problem with comparing games to each other, even something like VI and VII that has been going on for like 15 years. We need to have more actual arguments around here about which games are better or worse or whathaveyou. Arguments that don't immediately start out or degenerate into mascot-worship, that is ("VI is better because KEFKA"). Come on people, the gloves need to come off.

That is a very important point, generally the whole package of the game is much more important that having one cool individual part.

I slightly prefer FFVII. But both have incredible merits to them and to say which one is better is unfair to both amazing games.

I want to physically harm people when they fight over these two. Six is more similar to Seven than any other game in the franchise, and vice versa. They also happen to both be absolutely fantastic and are both made by virtually the same key development team.

I understand Seven thrust the franchise into a new level of popularity which Six fans resented, but that was years ago, and Six is immensely popularity now. So please, please stop, people.

Quoted for truth. These are easily my two favorite FFs of the whole series.

    >>> 2 different games who have nothing in common, FF6 vs FF7 is a stupid debate that has always been nonsensical..

Now a FF7 vs FF8 would make more sense..

FF8 loses purely because of junctioning. A subpar story doesn't help either. Watch Spoony's review of FF8 for more reasons.

To some people, liking both games equally is completely incomprehensible. Why? I always wonder. If there is one thing I will never understand about Homo sapiens, it is our constant need to compare everything.

As dr. Maya Angelou said: "All comparisons are odious."

No one compares FFVII and FFVIII because that's a one-sided battle.

    So true.

Unless it is some sort of compare and contrast project.
