Bow before the mighty Javoo!
A Better Life (2011)
It's about undocumented workers in the U.S., specifically, illegal immigrant workers from Mexico. It's sobering, sweet, and makes me appreciate my parents and my life comforts more. It gives a good picture of what a day in the life is like for undocumented workers. I was recommended this film by a friend who said he could really relate to the film at times... if anyone questioned the legitimacy of the film (I don't think anyone would, but just in case, I guess).
Also, it's about 1/3 in Spanish and 2/3 in English with some Spanglish thrown in, so make sure you have those subs turned on if you don't know Spanish.
Spirited Away 2/5
I don't understand why everyone likes this movie.
The acting was terrible. Haku was leaden in his portrayal of a river god. Lin was deadweight throughout the film. And ugh, Yubaba playing herself and her twin. Haven't we seen enough of that? That trout hasn't worked since Parent Trap. Might as well have had Eddie Murphy in the movie, sheesh.
The special effects were simply the worst I've ever seen. Crappy giant baby CGI? Check. Midget in a frog costume? Check. And what's this No-Face bulltrout? Put a black sheet on a guy and give him an ugly mask and you've got a meaningful character? Kamajii's stilt arms were also just stupid and pointless.
The locations were a joke as well. The train scenes were clearly filmed in a bathtub.
The movie's also blatantly racist, and it openly insights violence against parental figures. I was surprised that Chihiro's parents never got turned into bacon and eaten by Chi and her cannibalistic friends. Soot sprites? I mean everyone knows that the Japanese don't like black people, but COME ON!
And what a troutty ending! I mean, what, was it all just a dream? She had her little adventure and now she's back to the real world and nothing ever really happened? BULLtrout! I want my money back!
husband WHAT
I just watched Mr. Nobody for the first time, and I have to say that I loved it. I already want to watch it again just to try to catch some of the things I missed the first time and just because it was an enjoyable movie, albeit pretty depressing.
Great Gatsby;
10/10
My suggestion to those of you who have not seen this is to get the smurf up, find ten bucks and go see this. One of the best movies I've seen in a long time. The story was enthralling, the imagery was eloquent and the way everything was presented just clicked with me on an emotional level (a hard thing to do!). Go see it, now.
Also; I'm sad that I didn't read the book beforehand so I'm going to read it and go see it again.
I think I missed the first twenty minutes or so, but we watched Prometheus on the weekend and it was distinctly average but not rubbish. 3/5.

But... Tom Cruise!

Bow before the mighty Javoo!
He's right, actually, but Jack Reacher is a p. good series of books. I haven't seen the film yet or read the particular book it's based on though, but if they did a competent job adapting it then it should be entertaining enough to make it worth watching.
I wouldn't call it a 5/5, but it was damn good. Probably a 4/5, and definitely no lower than 3.5.
