True beauty exists in things that last only for a moment.
Current Mood: And it's been a long December and there's reason to believe. Maybe this year will be better than the last. I can't remember all the times I tried to tell myself. To hold on to these moments as they pass...
I didn't mind it when I was younger but it does seem to drag anytime I've played it as an adult. Partly because there's so little actual gameplay and it's not like I forget what happens during it. Sometimes you just want to skip things.
To me, it just feels like a screeching halt to the plot. You finally escape Midgar after x amount of hours (and depending on how much you know about the game, it can be lots and lots of hours) in the whole ass smurfing world, on the lam from Shin-Ra, searching for Sephiroth.
Then you take a break immediately to do an hour long cutscene where you can't even just spam X because have to move around and stuff. It's fine the first time or two, but afterwards becomes SUCH a chore. I think it would work much better narratively if it had come after the Mythril Mine. You see the Zolom that Sephiroth destroys, and it has given you a chance to explore the world some. Given that nothing really happens again until Junon (Fort Condor, but again--unless you know what's going on, Fort Condor seems really stupid and pointless) and MM itself is sort of a bore besides the 5 minute cutscene with the Turks, it just would have made more sense there.
IMO.
I would say I agree with everything you said about it actually Jinx.
It'd be impossible for me to tell what my actual least favorite moment from any RPG is, since all the bad from all the games I've played has become one big blur over time. Also some games were just all bad, it feels like using one of those would be cheating.
That said, my contribution to this thread is gonna have to be FF8's "Oh we actually all grew up in the same orphanage but conveniently forgot because of GFs. Also after this we're completely dropping the GF-induced amnesia angle again, because we don't want to change your gameplay"
Probably says something about how much I hate ffxiii that it makes me forget to even consider the orphanage plot twist. Yeah it was bad.
My distaste for ffviii is totally reasonable. Especially when it comes to that orphanage bulltrout.
