Fauna - Feathainne

New song/album leaked. This one appears to have been performed live. It's forty-one minutes long (which is a mere song snippet for them; their longest song is just a few seconds shy of eighty minutes) and it's awesome.

Fauna has often been credited with inspiring Wolves in the Throne Room's sound, for those who haven't heard of them, although they didn't release their first material until 2007.

Mirrorthrone - Ils Brandiront leurs Idoles

It's kind of hard to believe all these sounds are created by one guy in his bedroom. The drum machine is obviously a drum machine but everything else is so varied that it's difficult not to be amazed by the depth of sound. I just wish he hadn't volume compressed the recording so much - but luckily, I've found a solution to that with Audacity's Clip Fix, which brings back some of the lost dynamic range. Since discovering that feature and applying it to Mirrorthrone's two most recent albums I've been listening pretty obsessively to them. I'm going back through some other music in my library that was over-compressed and doing likewise.

Folk side project of Cascadian black metal pioneers Fauna. Each of their songs is at least thirty minutes in length (with the exception of the intro) but these are still mere song snippets compared to Fauna's, of which the shortest is forty-one minutes long. These songs are beautiful on their own, and given that some of them incorporate elements from some of Fauna's songs makes them part of an even more elaborately conceived whole. Superb music.

Fear of a Black Planet deserves every bit of its reputation; an immaculately produced hip-hop album with layers upon layers of sonic depth. Audacity has a feature called "Clip Fix" which is intended to be used to recover dynamic range from recordings that have suffered accidental clipping (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clipping_(audio)). However it also works on professionally recorded CDs, as it seems three quarters the recordings major labels :bou::bou::bou::bou: out these days are atrociously clipped (I am basing this solely on my having looked at the discographies of The Mars Volta, Muse, Moonsorrow, and Dream Theater). So I use Clip Fix to restore the dynamic range. It doesn't sound as good as it would if there hadn't been any clipping to begin with, but it sounds a lot better than what the labels apparently considered a releasable product.

Strangely, Clip Fix even recovers a bit of dynamic range from recordings compressed in other methods, though nowhere near as much, and on some recordings the difference it makes is inaudible. Also note that sometimes Clip Fix overcompensates when generating the new waveform so I sometimes have to compress the resultant signal somewhat in its restored dynamic range (usually by about a 2:1 ratio, but it varies depending on how much dynamic range it restores).

More on the loudness war here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudness_war).

utterly insane King Crimson cover, by far the most intense Crimson cover I've ever heard. Perfect ending to a superb, groundbreaking album.

Symphony No.5 in C minor, op.67 - 1-4 (Allegro con brio, Andante con moto, Allegro, Allegro) composed by Ludwig van Beethoven, as conducted by Carlos Klieber, played by the Wiener Philharmoniker.

One of, if not THE, best. This song is one of the most memorable things that I had the pleasure of playing in a true symphony.

Don't believe me? Skip to 6:00 and listen to that dynamic, thundering beauty!

Disco Ensemble - Black Euro.

Quickly becoming one of my favourite bands, all of their songs are strangely addictive but not in a sell-out mainstream way, infact they're one of Finland's best kept musical secrets. I absolutely adore them!

Falls of Rauros - Contemplation of the Forgotten

Listening to this you'd swear it was from the Pacific Northwest but they're actually from Maine, a pretty unusual locale for folk/black metal bands. Anyway it's good stuff. I think I like their second album better though. Can't wait for the third release which is going to have A. from Panopticon on drums; he's an amazing drummer.

These guys are a local band from my town, and they're awesome. I'm in love with some of this guy's lyrics, it's really 'Edgar Allen Poe-ish', except modern. The style of music might not be for everyone, but these guys definitely deserve to get a little recognition.

A Tolkien reference. And a screen name my ex used to go by.
I gave it a listen. . . I like the music, but I don't care for the vocal technique. Then again, I don't really enjoy the vocal techniques in any variation of metal.

As for me, I've gotten into Pinback, Straylight Run, and Taking Back Sunday only recently, admittedly rather late in the game. Ah well.

The Man
08-18-2010, 06:12 AM
yeah extreme metal isn't known for pretty vocals. it's generally a statement against the overcommercialisation of the music industry. it took me awhile to get into the vocal style but now I can't really imagine most of these bands with clean vocals.

Drudkh - Коли Пломінь Перетворюється на Попіл [When the Flame Turns to Ashes]

Ripping my vinyl of this. Unfortunately my turntable has decided it wants to vary its speed for no apparent reason. My previous rip had a couple of skips because I had too many programs open. I'm probably going to have to do some savvy editing to get a rip of this that sounds good.

One of Ukraine's finest bands for sure; I've got four of their LPs now and the other three are on the way to me. I put off buying most of their albums for far too long given how much I've listened to them. (I had this album, Forgotten Legends and Microcosmos on CD before getting the LPs, but didn't get any of their other stuff until recently).

It's a shame the sound quality of the live disc is a bit subpar because the performances themselves are smurfing awesome and almost always outstrip their studio counterparts.
