Slint - Good Morning, Captain

Classic. This album, Spiderland, had an incalculable influence on both post-rock and math rock, and this song is pretty much its emotional peak and centrepiece. It's not surprising that they broke up after releasing it, because there's basically no way they could have topped it. (Although they did briefly reform in 2005 and 2007 and perform one new song, but they have not as of yet recorded anything else and there are no indications that the band members are planning to do so). There are also persistent rumours that some of the band members had to be periodically institutionalised while or after recording this album because the emotional content was so intense. I could believe it.

Lykathea Aflame - Walking in the Garden of Ma'at

One of the more atypical death metal bands out there and therefore probably one of the best bands to get people into the genre. Their sound is surprisingly light and airy; with the exception of this track (which is synthesizer music with nature sounds overdubbed), it'll never be confused for new age music, but most of it's in a major key and it's unusually upbeat for the genre. The lyrics aren't particularly typical for the genre either, usually dealing with philosophical issues like the struggle over adversity. The musicians are all staggeringly proficient at their instruments and the composition is sound. The band are supposedly working on a second album, but they've been working on it for a long time; it has been eleven years since the release of Elvenefris so thus far they are one-album wonders. But it's an amazing album and their place in metal history would be secured even if they never end up releasing anything else.

Blut aus Nord - Epitome 02

It becomes pointless to call most black metal "atmospheric" after listening to stuff like this. Blut aus Nord always deliver and this is one of their best recordings to date. Alongside Echtra (another band that puts most "atmospheric" black metal groups to shame), Ash Borer, and Petrychor this is one of the best metal releases of the year. And, like most music, it sounds way better on vinyl. It's hard to believe they've already released two new releases in the last six months (counting the Mystical Beast of Rebellion re-release, which contains 37 minutes of new music) and have two new ones coming up in the next few months. I wish more groups had these guys' work ethic.

Ash Borer - Split with Fell Voices

This split was far and away one of the best metal releases of 2010 (note that the vinyl edition only came out this year; before it was only available on a super-limited cassette); both bands are among the best of the current crop of new black metal bands and both are at the peak of their powers on the track they contributed. I am currently ripping my vinyl copy, and it sounds glorious.

Eh, I just don't like both of those albums (although in a cruel twist of fate Locomotive is probably my favourite Gunners song). Granted, the songs you listed are alright, but I don't really listen to Guns and Roses for ballads, which is why I enjoy Appetite so much. I think that Chinese Democracy had a better assortment of 'ballad' songs, although I stand firm that Chinese Democracy is an album done by a completely different band that just had Axl Rose singing, nothing could sound less like old Guns n' Roses.

And every 5 posts be damned. I'm listening to;

Anybody who likes Frank Turner should check MD out because he was their vocalist. It's post-hardcore, as opposed to Frank's more folk oriented stuff currently, but he's consistently brilliant throughout.

@Noodle Boy, makes sense

Petrychor - Gamma Leonis

Ever since this band came out with its EP I've loved it. Tad Piecka (the sole member) has a really unique take on black metal that doesn't really sound like anything else out there; there's a lot of influence from post-rock and shoegaze, which isn't exactly uncommon in the genre, but he takes it in a completely different direction than is usually done. The EP is almost entirely in a major key, which is almost unheard of (the only other examples I can think of offhand are Drudkh's "Sunwheel" and some of Alcest's material) and the full-length album incorporates so many different influences it would be pointless to list them all. Yet he manages to pull this off without the material coming across as schizophrenic. My only complaint is that I wish he used less dynamic range compression in his mixes. Still, the album is definitely one of the highlights of this year so far and I can't wait for the vinyl release. And the guy can really play the guitar.

These are two of the best black metal bands at this point and each side of this split is simply stellar work even by their own standards. Definitely one of the best 2010 releases and it sounds even better on vinyl. Thank gods for ClickRepair. For some reason the record got slightly damaged in transit but after applying ClickRepair to my rip you can barely tell; I've only noticed one brief part in all 30 minutes I've listened to that sounds even remotely scratched. This is an utterly eerie piece, and it's arguably even more so in its stripped-down "de-mix". I think the A-side is overall more interesting to listen to though.

Trying to decide which one is the track to end all tracks, but it is a difficult decision to make. Love both of them at any rate.

Both cases of me having them for ages but generally skipping over them because the intro never really grabbed me, but they both ended up playing through when I was busy doing other things and found myself jamming out to them so bad and wondering why it had taken me this long to get into them. Love finding songs that way.

This band is pretty great, but nearly all their recordings are clipped so much it's almost painful to listen to the original releases (although the new album isn't as bad). Luckily an Audacity filter called Clip Fix exists. This latest album is years beyond anything they'd released previously; I've had it for maybe a month and have already listened to it like thirty times. Just two tracks totalling thirty-two minutes, but they're both gold.

vinyl rip sounds pretty good; too bad the person that made it didn't know what they were doing and uploaded a 16-bit rip as a 24-bit one. I've done that myself though so I can't blame them too much; a lot of sound cards that can only capture 16-bit audio give information that suggests they ought to be able to capture 24-bit audio for some absurd reason. Maybe I'll order the LP and make my own rip; it's only $20 apparently.

Still of the Night :: Whitesnake

I can't help it, it's infected my brain. In my defense I usually stop listening after the first 3 minutes or so.

You don't have to apologize for Whitesnake with me around. I'm a hair band junkie.

I haven't listened to The Mars Volta in a long time, I really ought to download all the tracks I lost.

Btw it may be time for a new thread. Next poster, feel free to do the honours ;)

The Bedlam in Goliath is literally just musician porn, drumming especially.

Last time there was a new thread BoB just merged it with the old one anyway xD

Back To The Same Place ~ Broken Vision.

They're some teen band that played a gig somewhere I was working a while back. For giving the frontman a strawberry, I got a free copy of their album. They're actually not half bad.

The Riddle threads always get capped at 40 pages, with 50posts per page. This thread is at page 225. Guess BoB likes his threads big.

I currently have my playlist "Seasons and Planets" on. It's for when I want to listen to not just any orchestral, but specifically Vivaldi's Four Seasons and Holst's Planets, the two best suites ever. I have it on random, and the current track is Neptune, my favorite of the planets because of what it makes me feel when I listen to it. Incidentally, right before it was Winter, my favorite of the seasons.

Ed Sheeran - The A-Team

I've only heard the two songs by this guy but I love them both (I must admit I love You Need Me, I Don't Need You a lot more than this one, but I still love this one :)). I should probably listen to more of his songs sometime.
I am now listening to his album (and have been for the past few days). I mean, not right now, although I seem to have picked up on the songs so well that they are on shuffle in my head and I listen to them by memory all day. >=]

Best songs from his album (which is called '+'): You Need Me I Don't Need You (epic), The A Team ("best British song of the year"), Small Bump (very touching), Wake Me Up, Drunk, Lego House and U.N.I.

Bass player from the Mad Capsule Markets new band, they made this collaboration with a bunch of other Japanese musicians as part of an aid effort for the whole earthquake and shit. Love the song so much, especially seeing as the singer from Dragon Ash is in it, MCM and DA two of my favourite bands so seeing the guys collaborate is awesome.

I hate the stupid labelling of music like this with "new age," a movement this really has basically nothing to do with. This song evokes its title better than just about anything I've heard. Utterly masterful.
