That's how I did it. I mean if you haven't seen it before (or maybe even if you have? I haven't re-watched any episodes/season) and all the episodes are available. It's extremely hard to stop. Did the same thing with Avatar: The Last Airbender. That was a gloriously fun weekend. I didn't feel traumatized from that one though lol

I used to find Cersei a sympathetic character to an extent, and she certainly is my favourite POV character in the books because the way she thinks is fascinating. However, Feast for Crows - book spoilers!the way she sent people off to be medically experimented on and tortured by Qyburn tipped her into the pure evil bracket for me, alongside the likes of the Mountain, Vargo Hoat, Ramsay and Joffrey. Especially poor Falyse Stokeworth. Lying to and manipulating her and her husband to go take out Bronn - a situation where they were woefully out of their depth - was one thing, typical Cersei. But when it goes tits up, when Falyse has lost everything - her home, her husband, her family - because of Cersei and is naturally really smurfing upset and looking for help and somewhere to shelter her, how does Cersei react? I cba to fix this or deal with your tears, so off to the dungeon with you to be sliced open and experimented on by Qyburn! :jess: On the character list at the end of each book Falyse's entry now notes that she "died screaming in the black cells". Can't sympathise. That has smurf all to do with the prophecy and smurf all to do with feeling like she is passed over because of her gender, that's absolute and pure evil.Quote:

Not much to say about the new episode. It was brilliant, better than the war on Blackwater Bay. A hundredfold bigger in scale. I'm not so sure how I feel about Jon going out to find Mance though.
A better way to end the episode would have been A Storm of Swords spoilerSamwell and his men invoking him to be their new Lord Commander.
I always had a bit of a soft spot for Ser Alliser. Is he a :bou::bou::bou::bou:? Absolutely, but he has the Nights Watch best interests at heart. He's also a seasoned Ranger, so it's of no surprise that he held his own against Tormund Giantsbane.Quote:

One gripe was is the poor prosthetic on the charging archer, someone needs to go to the Peter Jackson School of epic masks.
This episode was good, reminded me of Helm's Deep in LoTR. Wasn't as good as Blackwater though. Blackwater was cool because you were kind of rooting for both sides. I like when they focus on one group like this. I was half expecting this battle to be overlaid with Tyrion slowly walking up the steps to the headman's platform. So glad they didn't do some bulltrout like that.
Quite a few characters I liked killed off this episode, but it was inevitable. Surprised the Night's Watch didn't get steamrolled. That smurfing giant archer man, hoo boy. But that smurfing little kid's face, he was so proud of himself, and all I could think was "smurfing hell Sam why'd you tell him to fight". I don't know what Jon or Ygritte expected to happen but at least they could, y'know, chat a little. Briefly. What a crapsack world. It does steel Jon for doing some rough trout ahead though. Is he effectively Lord Commander currently, given the others are dead or pussies or out of action?

The transition from the giant to the top of the wall to the bottom was done well. Poor guy who's fell though.

I knew tonight's episode would be entirely focused on the wall once I saw the opening credits and there were only 5 actors in the cast before the names of the crew started rolling. I love that about this show. The opening credits are specifically relevant to every episode.
I couldn't believe I was actually cheering for Alliser this episode. Up until this point he's just been a trout head. But that's the beauty of Game of Thrones I suppose is being able to see that there are sides to everyone that you'll like and dislike.

I thought for sure that Sam was going to bite the dust in this episode. I heard the bell toll when he said "I promise I'm not going to die". That's usually a bad sign for this show.
I wonder what will happen to that guy that was hiding with Gilly? I imagine there's gotta be some sort of punishment for cowards in the Night's Watch.
Does anyone who's read the book remember if wildlings actually did so much raiding south of the wall? I might be misremembering but I thought they were meant to keep a low profile so they could surprise attack them from both sides when Mance Rider ordered the first attack. I definitely dont remember the Thenns being there and I dislike how it takes away any moral ambiguity and just turns the fight into good vs evil. Good episode though, loved the long panning shot of the fight.
I was hoping someone more consequential and dramatic would kill Ygritte like Alisser or Sam. Or Gilly if we want maximum irony

Sam definitely came into his own, and he got some lady action too, nice. If someone murders him I'll be pretty unhappy. I think Sam should win the game of thrones.
I do think for a penultimate episode they could have covered the whole battle...rather than just the lead up. I guess it may have seemed rushed if they did but I don't know, unless they are going to leave the situation at the wall until next season, I feel like it might be a drain on the finale especially since they've had a whole episode to themselves. There's a lot of other ting going on!

I was aware of how smurfing awesome this episode was as I watched which brought it to a new height of intensity.
Basically, had a smurfing intense raging boner the whole episode. That's my official review.
Pyp got one shot off and died but Grenn? Grenn was awesome. He knew full well when Jon told him to hold the gate that he'd probably die. He knew full well when the giant was charging that he would probably die. Jon wasn't his commander. Jon was his friend. And he was loyal to his friend and to the nights watch. And he rallied his men and killed the giant.
Grenn was a beast and I am sad.

Is there a chart somewhere with up to date listings of which important characters are still alive in each house, show wise?
Ser Alliser's a brute and an arsehole, but he still knows how to do his job. There is no other side to Janos Slynt except his cowardice, and every other person on The Wall including a preadolescent boy and nursing mother showed more courage. Potato Boy did his job without needing much encouragement from Sam, and then straight up killed a Wildling with his little practice bow. Gilly was ready to fight off an attacker with a leg of ham. Grenn would have been in serious trouble for pretending that order for Janos to relocate was given, though more likely busted down to the trouttiest job on the Wall than executed. Whoever is in charge now is only going to be stayed from executing Janos because they just don't have the manpower to kill him, but if he can't convince them he'll be useful in some capacity they probably would anyway.Quote:

Regardless of what does happen out of the above, I have a feeling it's going to be the best finale so far - by a country mile!
E: just saw the preview, glad we get to see more North! Didn't glimpse Sansa, though.
Overall a very good episode. It was a bit disappointing to see GoT revert to some overused action-movie tropes, such as the hero kneeling over his love interest in the middle of a smurfing battle to share an emotional goodbye (*gag*), but fortunately that was a relatively small portion of the episode.
I didn't like this episode because a.) I hate the Wall and b.) I don't like action scenes and this was one long one. I appreciate what they did with it, it's just not something I personally had any desire to watch.
NEXT WEEK THOUGH
What a great smurfing episode. The music made it for me. It was absolutely smurfing spot on, and as Del Murder mentioned, it reminded me also of Helm's Deep and the soundtrack of the LotR battles. It set the tone for every single thing, from battle preparations, being outnumbered and attacked from every side, the last glimmer of hope, to getting in order again to Jon leaving. smurfing great, all of it. Made the episode.
Some minutes in, it became apparent to me that they were just going to focus on the Wall for this episode, and I had my reservations about it at first, but they just did it so splendidly. I'm glad to see I was not the only one actually rooting for Alliser during this episode. It's clear he's a hard, unfeeling asshole, but he was a smurfing good commander in this battle and he did his duty. Not only that, he inspired those around him to defend the Wall. If the living had any doubt about their brotherhood before, they surely don't now.
I straight up sobbed to pieces when that kid shot Ygritte. Anyone could see her and Jon meeting in battle from a mile away, and it might seem sappy on paper, but they both just executed it beautifully. I sobbed my stupid eyes out while he sat there holding her as the battle went on around them. It seems to me, though, that he did them both a favor - neither of them needed to make the first move to kill one another, and one of them would have had to do it. I don't know who I would have placed bets on going first (probably Ygritte). And I sobbed again when he went below to find a dead Grenn and said, "They held the gate." Oh man, that was rough.
I really liked how changed Jon seemed after the battle the next day when he decided to go find Mance. He's always been a brave dude who did what needed to be done, but something about him just seemed to have snapped and he seemed to harden himself after the battle. His last little smile to Sam was comforting, though. I'm interested to see how he fares north of the Wall.
A complaint, if I may - not buying this Inspirational Sam thing, and the scenes with Gilly arriving at the Wall and then later kissing him... ah what? They both just seemed so forced. Didn't love it. Not one bit. Also, would have loved to see more Ghost destroying!
Can't wait to see Mance. What an awesome episode, and an awesome way to leave it. This is shaping up to be perhaps my favorite season, and this finale is going to be so jam-packed. These past few episodes leading up to it have just been done so wonderfully. I'm not going to know what to do with myself for another nine months after this show is over.
I loved everything about this episode. Definitely my favorite of this season, maybe even of the whole show.
I remember how much I hated Alliser from the books, and he is still a gigantic prick. But his perfomence in this episode was astoundingly good. The guy who plays him did his part perfectly. I hate Alliser, but he was without a doubt a leader of warriors who could rally men who hated him around him for a cause. I had chills every single time he spoke this episode. Loved it.
Janos is still a smurfing :bou::bou::bou::bou:.
Things with Ygritte happened differently in the book, if I remember right, but I liked this much much more. It helped keep the humanity of the characters in the fight. A sad thing to happen, but I knew it had to be.
Grenn. Oh Grenn, you beautiful, brave bastard. I loved you in the books and you did so well in the show. A beautifully brave stand off against the giant. Almost glad I didn't get to watch them all die.
I can't get over how intense this episode was. I know it was pretty much an hour long battle and a couple of you aren't about that. Maybe it is the Marine in me, or maybe it is the man in me, but I loved it.
The way Jon took control of the situation. Exactly how I had imagined it. omg. Favorite episode, I think, for sure.
It didn't feel forced to me. I really enjoyed Sam this episode.
I agree with more Ghost destroying, though.
So many great lines in this episode. "Pyp! Open the smurfING gate!" "Does nook mean smurfing draw? Does hold mean smurfing drop?!" "smurfING LOOOOOOOOSE! *flail in rage*" Ser Alliser utterly dominated this episode with his amazingness.
It was a disservice to Grenn not to show them fighting off the giant. That could have been such an amazing piece of TV. Close quarters desperate battle with a giant. I can imagine them hacking away whilst being batted away one by one, until the giant grabs Grenn and slams him into the ground, hard. With his last bit of strength, Grenn throws his shattered body at the giant's face and buries his sword deep into its skull. And then they die in the position we find them. Would have been amazing to watch, and His Magnificence The Beard definitely deserved it.
I'm like this too! I would seriously be content to watch happy people being happy all the time. This is why my favorite parts of Downton Abbey were the bits where they dressed pretty and would have dinner parties and hated all those episodes where they killed off people.Quote:

First, clearly if two versions of something are similar enough the first version you experience will be the one you prefer. With the books I went in not having a clue what would happen, whereas with the show I had a pretty good idea of how things would pan out. That being said, GRRM managed to make the battle feel drawn out (I believe it lasts three days in the books?) without making it boring to read. You feel the relentless attacks of the Wildlings just as much as the Night's Watch, and just when you think it's over another wave is coming. You feel hopeless and cold and just want things to end for them, but at the same time as a reader the adrenaline is causing this excited euphoric feeling that you never want to end. I understand it's hard to convey that in an hour, and I think Benioff, Weiss, and Marshall did an excellent of working with what they had. Also, what we were shown didn't seem like upwards of 100,000 Wildlings. The force didn't seem as imposing (aside from giants on mammoths) because of this, but again, limited resources. They did a fantastic job nonetheless.
A lot of people have been pointing out the differences between Ygritte's death in the books and the show, and many were disappointed by what they considered a "Hollywood" or trope-y scene. I think it's worth pointing out, however, that this wasn't on account of Benioff and Weiss. The parts of the scene that push it into Hollywood trope land were present in the source material. In fact, their final conversation is even longer, and Jon has some pretty cliché lines that were cut from the episode. That being said, the scene tore me up when I read it and it tore me up again in this episode. I understand it's clichéd, but it's a scene that has caused me to shed a few manly tears in both its print and television incarnations.
Kit Harrington knocked this one out of the park. Not really that spoiler-y but tagging it just in case.This was a big turning point. Jon is a very different person after this battle. He speaks, moves, and acts very differently from here on out. Kit nailed that change in character. You can see it immediately.

The difference is that the scene in the book happened after the battle while in the show it was during it. That's the only problem I had with it. The 'you know nothing' as her last line...come on you knew that had to happen!
Yeah, I think that's a fair criticism. Although, and I'll have to watch that scene again to confirm this, aren't they behind some sort of structure while this is happening? I seem to remember there being a building or something similar in between them and the bulk of the fighting.
It's two people together sharing a still and quiet moment as chaos rages all around them don't you see it's a metaphor for love - and indeed specifically their love? It's the god damn cave. Honestly now!

The fighting was epic. I thought it was weird that they decided to focus on one thing, especially because this now means they have to cram in several things for the finale, but they'll manage to do it in an hour. Yeah, while I didn't care for this episode (not because it was bad, just not my particular favorite sort of thing regardless of what show/movie it is) the music was AWESOME. I actually noted to Denmark while we were watching it that it sounded completely different from any music in the rest of the series, and I really appreciated that.
Come on guys the man thought he was about to be killed by the only woman he has ever loved or bedded and then out of the blue she gets shot. He's going to take a minute. Sam held Pyp while he was dying and nobody's bitching about that!

I wasn't really too bothered about it. The only bad guy firing arrows at that point was Ygri-- oh wait. And the rest of the soldiers were in the midst of battle and I believe at that point the Watch were winning, so it's not like he was going to get killed all of a sudden. I think the reason why Grenn and Pyp died is because the show only has time to focus on a few characters on the wall, whereas the books have more room to include more named characters.

I don't really mind cliches in general. I guess I just wasn't feeling this moment, or the chemistry between Jon and Ygritte's actors in general, which made the cliche-ness of the moment much more apparent. I didn't think it was completely terrible, just one of the lamest points of the episode for me. I can see how it'd be easier to appreciate if you were more immersed in the tension between the two.
Remember Joffrey's death? It was messy and painful and people were freaking out, screaming, crying, panicking. That was a good death. If I got shot through the chest with an arrow, I for one would probably be showing some indication that I was in agony. If the girl I loved got shot, probably the same. I wouldn't assume Hollywood Death Position and talk about my feelings.
If they had to bring Ygritte and Jon together again, here's how it should've gone:
*Ygritte sees Jon*
Ygritte: SMURF YOU JON SNOW! I HATE YOU!
*Ygritte shoots arrow that just barely misses*
Jon: NO! YGRITTE! STOP!
*Ygritte charges him with a knife screaming, a battle cry, hatred in her eyes. Jon is paralyzed, he doesn't want to fight her, it's heartbreaking and terrible.*
*Suddenly Ygritte is shot in the back at the last second*
Ygritte: UGH! AAAAAAAAAA! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGHRJKVBLBBLBLBLBLBBBLLLLBBBLLLL
*Ygritte spins and clutches at her back ineffectively. Blood spills everywhere.*
Jon: YGRITTE! NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
*Jon runs to her and tries to help. With her last strength Ygritte shoves him off and glares at him, unable to speak, struggling to breathe, kicking her feet in the dirt in a futile effort to get away or do anything. She dies with her angry eyes fixed on Jon.*
Jon: Ygritte! Ygritte...
*Jon stares in shock for a second. Then the sounds of battle bring him back to life. He staggers away, broken, weeping bitter manly tears, looking around without seeing anything. Then he sees a wildling, snarls and uses him as an outlet for the pain he's feeling. Camera pans out, showing all the filthy, bloody Night's Watch in black fighting the filthy, bloody wildlings. Camera zooms out further, until Jon blends in with all the nameless faceless people who fought and lives and died today, and the sounds of battle are lost in the snow. Fade to next day. Life sucks. GAME OF THRONES*
It would've fit the show. In real life people have stupid grudges and they hold onto them. Ygritte spent the past few months plotting Jon's death, why the change of heart? There is no change of heart in the books from what I recall.
Instead we get:
Ygritte: I just murdered dozens of your friends. Oh yeah also a while back I helped that bald guy eat some people. I've been plotting your death for 3 months because you betrayed me. But now I lurrrrrrrrrrrrve you~
Jon: Let's snuggle~ Good thing no one is paying attention to me, the strapping young warrior that just got off the elevator and single-handedly turned the tide of the battle. Good thing this entire castle full of my sworn brothers and the fate of the entire realm doesn't depend on my actions. I'll just go ahead and expose my back now.
Ygritte: :) :| :( *dies*

Maybe not so bad as that, but close. They acted it well, but the writing was silly.
Maybe it was cheesy, but I'm happy with it because it's the ending I wanted for them in my heart. It's tv, it's not real...and although one of GoT's best qualities is its realism when it comes to the characters, it still doesn't always have to be so.
You get people complaining about the characters dying all the time; but that's real. Then when something is a little cheesy and more like a tv show, other people don't like it.
I just like how GoT manages to pull it all off and very well, really.

I agree with Unne for the most part, though I still understand why Ygritte hesitated. My biggest issue is that the scene was just out of place in the gritty realism that surrounds most of the show. Obviously Jon was going to be hurt by her death, but there's a difference between being hurt and kneeling down unprotected in the middle of a goddamn battle while the camera slowly pans out. It was out of place for the show, and just unrealistic for Jon.
And Sam's reaction to Pyp was entirely different: 1) they were hidden behind a half-wall surrounding the platform, and 2) Sam generally being a less-experienced wuss whose mid-battle freakout was more in-character and realistic. Ygritte's death was an overly-cheesy attempt to get people to "feel feels," but all I felt was bile in my throat. It was definitely done better in the books: there are a lot of people, and you don't always see who dies. People aren't always killed in big dramatic moments with all eyes upon them.
It was the opposite of Oberyn's death, where the show did everything to look like it was setting up the stereotypical good vs. evil, David vs. Goaliath underdog victory over insurmountable odds to complete his revenge against a sworn nemesis and then... oh wait, his head's cracked open. Whoops. I can respect the cheesey buildup if you're going to subvert expectations.

I didn't really like how they dealt with Grenn. It was like Jon forgot about the gate and Grenn having to hold it. You'd think he'd have rushed in there at some point. It's like we're missing some information in the show, like someone already came and told Jon that the gate held but everyone died or something. Jon stopping to look at the dead bodies and saying "he held the gate" took away from the moment instead of adding to it.
Ygritte saying her line one last time was absolutely inevitable, and I'm surprised it surprised anyone. Having read the books, the moment that "you know nothing Jon Snow" became a meme, you knew those would be her last words.
As far as it being out of character for Jon to stop fighting to cuddle Ygritte, I disagree. It's perfectly in keeping with his character. Jon Snow is soft, or at least softer than everyone else around him. Ygritte was a unique, wild woman, and Jon Snow will never know her equal, of course he should cuddle her as she dies. Jon Snow is unique in this show because he is a leader with a heart. That is his strength and also his weakness in the story. That's the whole point of his character. (well that and the whole bastard will rise thing)
As for Ygritte. Well I think she was going to shoot Jon. I think a memory of love kept her from shooting right away, but she would have in the end if Olly hadn't ended her.
BTW, I loved Olly's little head nod to Jon. Whatever else you want to say about the scene, that was fantastic.
What was wrong with the scene was Ygritte mentioning the cave. That was the truly cheesy moment, the bad writing. The rest is understandably inevitable.
I scoff at the "battlefield experts" who think they know what would or wouldn't happen in the midst of battle.

I cant believe they didn't show next season spoiler :colbert: Lady Stoneheart that really smurfed me off... how could they leave something like that out, other then that I thought the finally was a pretty good if a tiny bit lacklustre, Tywin dead... I didn't really feel much, and after the way they killed Oberyn I was hoping for something a little better. I really cant wait to see Arya next season, I think her story is going to be really taking off.
I loved the children under the tree and was a little sad to see Jojen go, and for a brief moment I thought (even though I knew it wouldn't happen) that Bran might have died there, finally we see the remaining Stark children take the centre stage. Arya is going to have next season her training at the house of black & white, Sansa is finally coming into her own and Bran is becoming a warg... I'll be honest, I'm not sure what kind of significance bran is going to be in the future and it is really interesting to see what is going to happen.
Now I wonder what Cercei is going to do Something in the future to drive Jaime away and give her up when she needs a champion
As for Brienne, I loved her fight with the hound, best fight of the season imo. I'm not to sure whats going to happen with her in the future... and tbh I don't care to speculate about it. She and Pod seem like to minor to have a major roll in the next season, but who can tell?
Dany... her story seems a little dragged out, I am even beginning to grow bored by her story. I'll admit it, if she doesn't start doing something decent next season I will probably not care what happens to her. Getting really tired of the lack of dragons tbh, I expected to see more of Drogon then the brief performance of him getting breakfast. I'd give her a 1.5/5 rating this season, and only because she freed the slaves.

I loved this episode. Everything about it was amazing. So many feels. Especially when you find out about the little girl and when Dany locked up her dragons. Jaime and Tyrion's farewell.
Seeing Arya heading towards the ship, I was jittery with anticipating, thinking

Seeing a couple of characters share the spotlight for the first time was a personal highlight for me. I wasn't expecting the Wall to get any more screen time given the one hour battle they had last week, but I enjoyed it. I was genuinely sad to see the dragons be locked up. I'm guessing they suffered a budget cut or something since there were very little dragons this season. The children under the tree was nice, too. I kept expecting him to say, "Come with me if you want to live." I don't know why.

A Storm of Swords spoilerIs there any particular reason why Tysha wasn't addressed in this episode? Considering how much influence she has on Tyrion's character arc, it seems a bit odd for her not to be here. Then again, I hear that Shae is characterized very differently here than she is in the book.
That note aside, I liked this episode for the most part. The last scene with Arya and the Hound together was my favorite part. Not only was the fight leading up to that part well executed, it was a pleasure listening to Sandor, lying bloody and broken at the bottom of the cliff, ramble on to Arya as she impassively looks on. I'd probably have to watch the scene again to better sum it up, but that was the one that stood out most to me.
Storm of Swords book spoilerThe thing is, I actually thought the final scene was great. It was photographically beautiful, the choral song was stunning and hopeful, and while I'm not a huge Arya fan, her story just took a very interesting turn.
And then they had that extra long black pause and I hoped. Oh god.
But I just feel like that scene--which I would in any other way consider perfect--was ruined.

I wish people would stop saying they're disappointed BOOK SPOILER for the lack of LS. People are just gonna look it up because they won't know what it means, and immediately get disappointed and extremely angry. Anyway, that particular person can still be shown in the premiere for next season.
Stop focusing on what wasn't shown in this episode, and focus on what was there. I can't believe how many amazing scenes we had in this episode. Brienne vs Sandor was amazing. The choreography was through the roof, which is what we come to expect, but they just seem to outdo themselves every season.
All of the Tyrion scenes were wonderful, I just felt like there was a missed opportunity with him commenting on seeing whether his father truly trouts gold. I approve of them speeding up the process of him leaving for the crate. In the books, that whole thing took ages and was almost confusing as to what was going on. Even him scurring around the castle to find Tywin was confusing. Sometimes, less is more. And a great example of correctly utilizing that was done here.
Arya had the most impactful episode of the entire series, so it's great to see her story will be getting more exciting at last.
We FINALLY saw the Three-Eyed Raven. And the show spoiled something even for book readers. There was no confirmation that Jojen was killed. Now it's all but confirmed that he is indeed A Dance With Dragons spoilerthe paste that Bran eats so that he can warg into trees. So Bran's story is getting a much needed jolt as well.
What else? Jon's story came to a nice conclusion but I still think they should have Next season spoilerat the very least initiated the vote for their new Lord Commander but I shall not complain because I smurfing love every second of Tormund that we get.
The scene with Cersei and Tywin was intriguing. I don't recall if she ever explicitly tells him about herself and Jaime, but it would be interesting if that nugget of information played a role in Tywin bedding Shae. We can argue all day how those two got into bed (no pun intended) with one another, but I doubt there will ever be conclusive evidence, what with both of their current predicaments.
Dany continues to show her absolute incompetence. I do hope this opens the floodgates for everyone that loves her so fiercely. "Mother of Dragons", who cannot control her babies, and has to chain them up. I enjoyed that scene, although Emilia's lack of emotion when actually chaining them up was so bad that I cringed. It just looked like she was doing nothing, then when she looks back at them screaming in disgust, she's balling her eyes out. Bitch please. If they weren't CGI, you wouldn't maintain a stoic expression while chaining 'em, and you know it. Your acting has been bad for the whole season, but this is just a prime example of it. But it doesn't matter whether she acts well or not, does it? Because she has bewbs and dragons so smurf she's the greatest, isn't she? Oh hey guys, I'm gonna come and free y'all slaves. Love me! Wait, you want to go back to the Masters and be slaves again? GO THEN! SIGN THIS THING CALLED A CONTRACT. I SHALL ADD THAT TO MY LIST OF TITLES. "CREATOR OF TREATIES". BOW BEFORE MY EXCELLENCE. It's truly hilarious how anybody can take her seriously. She'll do one thing, and then do something ten minutes later that will contradict her entire character development. Nice one there!
Varys continues to be the sleeper pick for most expected to rule the Seven Kingdoms when this series officially ends. Everything he does, is masterfully planned. He's a genius, and I truly want him to become a POV character in both the show and the books, but I fear writing for him in a more consistent way would be very spoilerish.
Strong opening scene with the Wall. I really enjoyed that they picked right off where they left Jon Snow before. Could have really done without that special Ygritte burial North of the Wall, though. That was nonsense. We had our closure in the last episode, and it was pushing mush cliches. This one just made it boil over.
Oh my god, Daenerys chaining up her dragons. Sobbing, sobbing the entire time because I knew what was coming. My puppy was sitting right next to me during that scene and he knew I was sad so he comforted me and it made me feel even sadder.
Holy trout JOJEN WHAT THE smurf WHAT HAPPENED THERE WHY WHY WHY also book spoilers I'm pretty disappointed at the lack of Cold Hands. That would have been really neat to see and could have easily been worked into the story.
I've only just passed the children of the forest/Greenseer part in the book, and I'm so glad I did. I keep drawing similarities between this show and LotR. When I was reading this part in the book, I imagined what it looked like when Aragorn when to visit the Men Under the Mountain. I must say, the Greenseer was a bit disappointing to me; I really wanted to see some crazy special effects with his skin blending with the trees and roots and a twisted morbid figure. I also hoped for more emphasis of his phrase, "but you will fly," especially since we as show viewers haven't been able to hear why that Three-Eyed Crow says to Bran. The execution of that scene was a bit anti-climactic to me, I felt.
The interaction between Arya and Brienne was one of my most favorable moments between the two of them at the season. And then The Hound had to come in and go all sentimental against his character with his admission that he's watching over her and I just rolled my eyes. Too out of character for me. Also the scene with him dying as Arya watched went on for entirely too long. It began to lose its meaning for me by the time he was begging her to just off him and I no longer cared about staring into her dead-eyed face as she just gazed at him.
Really loved the tender moment between Tyrion and Jaime as they were telling eachother farewell quickly. It was succinct and to the point with feels and was great.
Oh my god, the look of utter incomprehension on Tyrion's face when he found Shae in that bed was just heartbreaking. This scene got me so badly in the books and it was one of the biggest "what the smurf" moments of the series and it just destroyed me to think of how he might be feeling. This is the scene I've been waiting episodes for. It felt over all too quickly by the time it passed for me, though.
tywin/tyrion book spoilersBit disappointed of no mention of Tysha or "where do whores go" in Tywin's final appearance as it's such a big part of the parts I'm reading about him right now!
Also, Varys on the docks. A bit careless not to be dressed in atleast one of his clever disguises, even if he knows his absence will be noted.
Not the best final scene for a season, imho. I personally don't care about Arya and her going to Braavos, and I think it would have been stronger to end with Tyrion's scene and him being shipped off or even a shot of Drogon somewhere in the middle of nowhere soaring in the sky and raising hell, but ah well. Overall really incredibly strong season, and I am very pleased.
Your hate of the Targaryen girl could rival that of the late great King Robert. Tears were starting to fall from her eyes while she was chaining them up so I'm not sure how she was maintaining a stoic expression there. I would have liked to see her deny the old man's request and see conflict rise from there as Daenerys deals with liberated slaves who don't want to be liberated. Did it happen the same way in the books or was this a show exclusive?Quote:

Also, re: drogonI have yet to read more about it, but I have a distinct and heavy feeling that Drogon will play a part in Daenerys' future, whether he is in the next season or even the season after that. I was quite surprised there was not a mention of the role I believe he will play during this episode because it was apparent and obvious in the books.
I do think Arya is a strong character and enjoy her scenes, so we're just going to have to agree to disagree there. Drogon might have gotten more scenes in general if for whatever reasons we didn't see much of the dragons this season weren't there.
Need more dragons!
I get the feeling one deviation from the books readers wouldn't protest would be Dany leading her army across the narrow sea on the back of her dragon and setting fire to the Red Keep.
Knowing Game of Thrones, though, the episode would first end with her touching down and the dragon roaring at the screen and then next week...
