For both of those reasons, yes, I find her a bit of a sympathetic character. She's a dumbass though.
I used to find Cersei a sympathetic character to an extent, and she certainly is my favourite POV character in the books because the way she thinks is fascinating. However, Feast for Crows - book spoilers!the way she sent people off to be medically experimented on and tortured by Qyburn tipped her into the pure evil bracket for me, alongside the likes of the Mountain, Vargo Hoat, Ramsay and Joffrey. Especially poor Falyse Stokeworth. Lying to and manipulating her and her husband to go take out Bronn - a situation where they were woefully out of their depth - was one thing, typical Cersei. But when it goes tits up, when Falyse has lost everything - her home, her husband, her family - because of Cersei and is naturally really smurfing upset and looking for help and somewhere to shelter her, how does Cersei react? I cba to fix this or deal with your tears, so off to the dungeon with you to be sliced open and experimented on by Qyburn! On the character list at the end of each book Falyse's entry now notes that she "died screaming in the black cells". Can't sympathise. That has smurf all to do with the prophecy and smurf all to do with feeling like she is passed over because of her gender, that's absolute and pure evil.
I don't disagree on any particular point, though I think she's more stupid than evil. She just can't think of a more clever way to deal with things.

Like The Vampire Diaries... I can't think of a single character who was killed that didn't come back. Some several times. I just roll my eyes when they die.

I did not roll my eyes when Oberyn died.

BJ has this problem too--he wants to see good guys win and bad guys lose. He's admitted he would be happy just watching a show where all the Starks stayed in Winterfell and hung out and ate ham all the time and the Lannisters died of the trouts.
I really want to admire Martin for doing something different but deep down I'm just like BJ. I guess we're too nice of guys to appreciate horrible things happening to likable characters on TV. I think I'd have less of an issue with it in a book since I can use my own imagination to make it more tame in my head.
Yeah, I think BJ was the only person on Earth bummed when Joffrey died. He was like "Nooo, he was supposed to take down the Lannisters from the inside! Now the grandpa's going to fix everything! Lannisssttteeeerrrrssss!"

Overyn's death was less brutal in the books though. I feel like this and Talisa's death at the red wedding were specifically written to keep book readers on their toes. In the book, if I remember correctly, Oberyn just takes one massive punch that caves in his head and it's over. The toothless screaming with thumbs deep in his eye sockets... I totally covered my eyes but peeked through my fingers.

    Neither did he.

I distinctly remember the Mountain confessing as he crushed Oberyn's skull in the books, though. It's been a while, but I swear it happened pretty much exactly the same. no?

    :monster:

It's been awhile since I read it, but in the book he says something correcting the order of the crimes in Oberyn's account, ending with something along the lines of "then I smashed her smurfing head in, like this", and then kills Oberyn.

A quick read of the duel scene and Gregor's killed an innocent bystander... That didn't happen in the show. :I

Ok so how oberyn lostgregor grabs his knee, and holds him tight ~like a lover~, then uses his free hand to sove his fingers in oberyn's eyes, punches his face, then crushes his head.

Tyrion instantaneously pukes. That didn't happen in the show. :I

And of course GRRM used his typical food porn descriptions with the puke, dont you doubt that for a second.

Not much to say about the new episode. It was brilliant, better than the war on Blackwater Bay. A hundredfold bigger in scale. I'm not so sure how I feel about Jon going out to find Mance though.

A better way to end the episode would have been A Storm of Swords spoilerSamwell and his men invoking him to be their new Lord Commander.

I always had a bit of a soft spot for Ser Alliser. Is he a ? Absolutely, but he has the Nights Watch best interests at heart. He's also a seasoned Ranger, so it's of no surprise that he held his own against Tormund Giantsbane.

To be honest, I picture Alliser as a more gritty version of Jorah Mormont.

Pretty damn sure Tyrion started to laugh immediately after as well. Who cares though. If you're going to constantly compare the show to the book, you're going to have a bad time. Just realize that the two don't have to be 100% identical and enjoy them both for what they are.

Yeah Ser Alliser showed his true colours in a way, he told everyone why hes a bit of a dick, he had some great lines as well. Good to see most of my favourite Nights watch survive, as far as GOT goes I count that as a win.

    The Giant Archer............ holy trout.

One gripe was is the poor prosthetic on the charging archer, someone needs to go to the Peter Jackson School of epic masks.

This episode was good, reminded me of Helm's Deep in LoTR. Wasn't as good as Blackwater though. Blackwater was cool because you were kind of rooting for both sides. I like when they focus on one group like this. I was half expecting this battle to be overlaid with Tyrion slowly walking up the steps to the headman's platform. So glad they didn't do some bulltrout like that.

Quite a few characters I liked killed off this episode, but it was inevitable. Surprised the Night's Watch didn't get steamrolled. That smurfing giant archer man, hoo boy. But that smurfing little kid's face, he was so proud of himself, and all I could think was "smurfing hell Sam why'd you tell him to fight". I don't know what Jon or Ygritte expected to happen but at least they could, y'know, chat a little. Briefly. What a crapsack world. It does steel Jon for doing some rough trout ahead though. Is he effectively Lord Commander currently, given the others are dead or pussies or out of action?

When his head hit that anvil. I auidbly said ouch!

The transition from the giant to the top of the wall to the bottom was done well. Poor guy who's fell though.

    Awesome episode.

I don't think they ever revealed who killed Ygritte in the books, did they? Or am I wrong? That whole scene was such a stereotypical Hollywood esque ending.

Well I wouldn't count Ser Alliser out of it just yet. He's a stubborn bastard. But yeah, they're no doubt suffering a bit of a command issue, given the fact that four different dudes had control of the Wall during the battle.
