It's simply a picture of me, facing forward, white background, with some sort of formal suit on, I guess.
I don't know if you were being serious in this, but you guys can't request pictures from each other. Sorry.

No takers? This BITES.
Oh huzzah.
ValkyrieWing and 41-inches-wide- 1 request (Resha)
Dionysus- 2 requests (tan, Lionx)
Okay. xD
For ValkyrieWing's group, a picture of Emma (Spiffing Cheese) and I together.

http://www.eyesonff.com/members/albu...piffingcheese2
For reference, I guess. Oh, Emma's the one with the glasses in the second pic, if you didn't know! :D
ValkryieWing and 41-inches-wide- 2 requests (Resha, Shauna)
Mum and Omecle- 2 requests (tan, Lionx)
We're 1/3 of the way there :)
*takes note*
OH OH I want to have a picture drawn by Aicha. :D Can you draw me a...true Filipino kanto-boy!
Please? :D? To 41-inches-wide and VW. :D
It's simply a picture of me, facing forward, white background, with some sort of formal suit on, I guess.
Argh - I did it before I saw the 'white background' part! Hope its ok.
As I work in pastels (chalks that are about 8mm thick) and you wanted a full length pic, I couldn't get much detail. So its not my best work, but the best I could manage given the size and detail. Still, I have 2 more shots to redeem myself!
Uh, I forgot to tell you guys... You weren't supposed to start. Mum sent me her first entry, but please don't get angry at her for getting a jump start on the competition, I merely forgot to tell you guys something. For those of you already starting/finishing up on these first entries, it's fine, but I just don't want any uproar about someone doing better because the other person had more time or something.
Right now all you guys have to do is wait for more requests to come in, and most likely on Wednesday, if we don't have enough requests, I'll just set some random ones for you guys.
So, until we get all the requests, the entries aren't due (which is why I haven't set deadlines yet), so you can start if you want, though it's not necessary, but you don't need to turn anything in until I set the deadlines. Mum is therefore ahead of you, but this was just a misunderstanding by me, so don't riot please =P
We'll just wait a couple days for the requests to come in then this challenge will begin.
I have an idea for Mum or Omecle.
I would like a portrait of my favorite actress Alexis Bledel.
http://felicia-online.com/Gilmore_Girls/Rory91.jpg
Obviously it shouldn't be drawn solely as a portrait, add some creativity in it to make it somewhat unique. Though it'd be nice if you could work with the dark colors of the images, just be...creative or something!
ValkryieWing and 41-inches-wide- 3 requests (Resha, Shauna, DK)
Dionysus- 2 requests (Lionx, Reles); 1 request finished (tan)
I would like to see a landscape, the dimensions can be anything you're comfortable working with. I want equal parts earth, water and vegetation, and absolutely no human life at all reflected in the picture. The geography can be arid, desert, mountainous, rainforest, tundra, anything you with, as long as earth, water and vegetation are all accurately represented. I don't want to see a river flowing through a desert or the ocean next to the rainforest.
The time of day is also up to the artist. The thing I want to see the most is the evocation of feeling. If you want the landscape to seem lonely, I want to feel lonely when I look at it. If you want it to seem cozy and homey, I want to feel like I'm at home. You may use any technique, medium and color palette you wish. I'm making this request of both teams. I think tan said I could do that. If I'm wrong, please let me know xD
EDIT: Apparently I already goofed. I can only select one team! I select Mum and Omecle for my landscape.
ValkryieWing and 41-inches-wide- 3 requests (Resha, Shauna, DK)
Dionysus- 3 requests (Lionx, Reles, fire_of_avalon), 1 request complete (tan)
We only need 5 more :)
ValkyrieWing and 41-inches-wide.
I would like to see a small sailboat sailing on a lake, with a sunset in the background. I'd like the area around the lake to have a wintry setting. Color palette and technique are up to them. I'd like emphasis to not be on the boat specifically, but on the enviornment surrounding it.
:D!
ValkyrieWing and 41-inches-wide- 4 requests (Resha, Shauna, DK, Jowy)
Dionysus- 3 requests (Lionx, Reles, fire_of_avalon), 1 request complete (tan)
Dionysus
I'd like you to draw a picture to accompany this poem. Please ignore the title of this poem. I want all three of the major stanzas to have equal weight in the drawing. Other than that, have fun.
I sholud try this, it would be nice as an exercise.
Sorry, you can't be a contestant. This competition has been running for about two months now, and we were looking for contestants last challenge to replace someone who dropped out o_o
ValkryieWing and 41-inches-wide- 4 requests (Resha, Shauna, DK, Jowy)
Dionysus- 3 requests (Reles, fire_of_avalon, nik0tine), 2 request complete (tan, Lionx)
EDIT: Omecle finished one of his pieces, but from now on, he and his partner decided to start their other pictures when I give the deadline. This means ValkyrieWing and 41-inches-wide, you can start on your pieces if you'd like, but just you first piece (each).
I haven't even been able to contact 41 recently.
Been a sleeper on these boards for a long time, always reading but never really posting.
My request is very abstract, something that will take the form of a person, possibly a fantasy setting. A single person who can represent the struggle between the light and the darkness inside us all.
There are many different ways to do this picture, many different styles and many different concepts. All I want to see is a single person in some sort of setting that can show the struggle between good and evil.
Enjoy. :tonberry:
Ok:
Since I haven't heard anything from 41 for the past few days, I would like to lay claim on my share of the drawings.
Id like to do Jowy's, Reisha's, and Kitsune no Kage's.
I'm so sorry VW.
I'm here I'm here yay!
Ok I'm going to draw Kyono's request.
ValkryieWing and 41-inches-wide- 5 requests (Resha, Shauna, DK, Jowy, Kitsuno No'Kage)
Dionysus- 3 requests (Reles, fire_of_avalon, nik0tine), 2 requests complete (tan, Lionx)
ANNOUNCEMENT: I've decided that because no requests are coming in anymore, and because I wanted the whole "team" aspect to be a little more apparent, I have decided that now each contestant will have two draw 2 entries each, and 1 entry together. It doesn't matter which ones they do alone and which ones they do together, just as long as they do it. Be sure to notify which ones were done alone and which one was done together.
ValkryieWing and 41-inches-wide
1st Piece Deadline- 10/27
2nd Piece Deadline- 11/5
3rd Piece (done as a team) Deadline- 11/8
Because Omecle and Mum have already done the first piece each, their deadlines will be a week before the other team's.
Dionysus
2nd Piece Deadline- 10/27
3rd Piece (done as a team) Deadline- 11/1
I know the third piece's deadline doesn't give that much time to do that piece, but since it's a team piece, it shouldn't take that much time (hopefully).
>>> Work together with another artist looks like fun..
Its a shame Im not part of this..
I'm going to do requests from DK and Shauna. :D
EDIT: By the way, it's team Imagine
Draw yourself in the picture too as a kanto-girl please, Aicha. :D
I thought all our work was meant for us to work together, but ok. o.o;
Still looking for a request though. ^^;
Okay, well I'm still unable to contact Mum (been a few days)... And to be honest, it's going to be rather hard to work together on one piece over the internet, other than just giving advice. =\
OK!
We just got DSL, and I've worked the entire week. Hopefully, i will have my first submission done by Friday....
I've sent in my landscape for Fire of Avalon.
The feeling I attempted to evoke was that of solitude, space and peace.
Unfortunately it it was too big to scan so I took a digital photograph of it and its turned out a bit blurry. Theres more detail and subtle layers of colours than can be seen in the actual painting, but I hope its ok, FoA.
Cheers.
Now, on with the other one so I can send it to Omecle in time!
Pass.
Pass?
Reisha's has been submitted. :D
On to Kitsune's....
Err, I meant submitted too... :3
Imagine: 3 requests (Shauna, Jowy, Kitsune No'Kage), 2 finished (Resha, DK)
Dionysus: Finished 5 entries- Reles: team piece, fire_of_avalon: Mum, nik0tine: Omecle, tan: Mum, Lionx: Omecle)
For those who requested pictures from Dionysus (Mum and Omecle) please PM me and I will show them to you. Until the other team is done with their pieces, I will not show them to anyone besides those who requested.
EDIT: The new deadline for Imagine is November 8th, because 41-inches-wide has to go to a 3-day seminar thing. I will also be gone, from November 5th-8th, without computer access, so if you guys PM me and I don't respond, I'm not ignoring you, I'm simply gone =P
It's definitely great to see the entries turned in so far, and I think it's apparent that it'll be hard to choose the top 3 to go on the EoFF's Art Week (the week in which you show your final collection).
Thank you for being so considerate, Tan.
See you on the 8th everybody.
One more to go! LOL
I've finished the submission for Kitsune no Kage. :)
Hello everyone! I'm back :D I've received all of the entries that are due so far, and there's only one left for Inspiration to turn in.
Imagine: 1 request (Jowy), 4 finished (Resha, DK, Shauna, Kitsune No'Kage)
Dionysus: Finished 5 entries- Reles: team piece, fire_of_avalon: Mum, nik0tine: Omecle, tan: Mum, Lionx: Omecle
Again, if any of you requested a picture and I have mentioned it as finished, then you may PM me to see it and guest judge it.
Oh. I thought we were team Imagine. Well, okay. Valkyriewing has given me the piece to finish.
:D
Hopefully, we'll have our last one done soon. :)
So, we don't have to go by deadlines?
41 and I live more than 16 hours apart, and during the course of this particular challenge, we've both had something screw up our timing. Tan gave us a tiny bit of leeway.
I know it may seem unfair to give people extra time, but I'd rather give them a bit of extra time and get an entry than just eliminating them. Both of them are very busy, and if you and Mum asked to have an extension, I would've given it to you. The deadlines are not cut-off deadlines, so I don't eliminate anyone for turning it in late. Of course, this makes deadlines sort of pointless if I'm not going to follow them, but, anyone who needs an extension is given one under certain circumstances. It being late also comes into factor when judging, considering if someone turns in an entry late and it's sort of bad, then it counts against them. For Team Imagine, the tardiness of the piece may or may not come into factor; it just depends.
I will not give them anymore of an extension. In fact, the cut-off deadline for their last piece is tomorrow, November 11th. I know both of you are busy, 41-inches-wide and ValkyrieWing, but I've given you two enough time. Sorry to be harsh :(
Yes, yes of course! :3
I have already sent the piece to Valkyriewing for the final tweaking of the final reqest by Jowy. She'll turn it in tomorrow.
Sorry for the delay and everything.
Already sent it in. :D
That's all of the entries, so, now, I can display them :)

I am extremely proud that all of the entries have been turned in, and as soon as I get all the guest judges' reviews and scores, I'll post them, and we'll see who deserves to move on to the final 3!
41 and I are toast.....LOL
ValkyrieWing, yours are amazing! Bob Dylan one is so damn good.
Well, I have all of the reviews except two: Resha's and Jowy's, and Jowy is going to turn his in. I don't know where or why Resha hasn't turned hers in yet, considering she read the PM I sent to her about it (I check PM receipts =P).
I think Mum deserves a thank you for my drawing. It's incredibly brilliant. I couldn't have imagined anything that good, and I have a pretty vivid imagination.
T____T
I already have one team's final scores, and by the looks of it, anyone can be erased :O
one person on the team? or both people?
Just one person. The whole team aspect comes in to play, though, with the winning team. I average the two averaged scores of one team, and whoever has the highest team average wins, and both of the people from that team move on. The losing team with the lower average has one person eliminated. This is why the whole team aspect is important- if your partner doesn't do well, it'll drag the team's average down. I just need one more review and we're done :)
Well, then, i'd like to apologise to my teammate. I'm really sorry...things during the course of this competition made it so that I was really unable to spend as much time on this as I would have liked to. I hope that, if we lose because of this, that you can forgive me for my mistakes.
Mum and Omocle did an incredible job. Wonderful work, and there's really no doubt in my mind you two are going to win. :)
Thank you for your kind words, but I think you are an incredible artist and have loads of talent. There is no way you are not going to be in the final and you deserve to be there. I feel it all depends on the subject matter for the final drawing - there are some areas I just fall down on where you excel. Hey, I may not get into the final - but I've enjoyed the ride and its got me back into painting again which I hadn't done for 3 years.
Best of luck everyone, and yes I agree that the works submitted were of a good standard. Well done everyone! We can all give ourselves a great big pat on the back, and Tan too for thinking up these inspiring challenges and then proceeding to "herd cats".
All of those pictures are awesome, but the picture of the Dancer is stunning.
>>> Wow, no wonder you guys make it so far in this contest..
great pics..
All the best of luck to everyone. I can feel I won't pass through, but that's really okay, because it's been cool to create these things I normally wouldn't have a go at. The water colour of the dancer was by far the hardest thing I've ever accomplished, and I'm greatful for completing it!
Black Orb, if you were in this, you'd just own us all up and win the damn thing at challenge 1. XD
Well, Jowy's taking too long (or I'm just very impatient) so I've decided to write the review for their (ValkyrieWing and 41-inches-wide) pic. I'll post his review when I get it, but I won't include the score he gave. I'm sure they'll be about the same anyway -_-
First off, there's a twist (xD). Instead of getting 3 main judges to review each of your works, I treated the guest judges for your three pieces as your main judges. This means that instead of 12 reviews for each person, there are only 6. I did this because I believe that when a person requests a picture from an artist, the real main goal is to please them, and it doesn't really matter how other people review their picture. The reason why the extra guest judge is to be sure people didn't request a picture from one team and give them a good score just because they like the person who drew it, so I asked a friend of mine (who you may know) to guest judge (he reviewed each very harshly, mind you).
Oh, and for the pieces you both worked on, both of you get both scores factored into your averages.
Let me introduce the judges:
There were all the people who requested pictures (obviously)
And, most importantly, the harshest judge I have seen so far,
Dignified Pauper, the wittiest member to grace their prescence at our forums to date. He's banned, too :o
So, here's the reviews:
Team Imagine: 41-inches-wide and ValkyrieWing
41-inches-wide #1
DK:
"I was already expecting suave things from Aicha, and her picture definitely exceeded my expecations, I love it so much.
It's totally awesome."
DP:
"We have some interesting visuals here. A pair of adolescents sitting outside a building. Anime inspired character faces with interesting coloring aspects throughout, as well as some idle characters throughout. However, I'm left wondering, what does the art suggest. We see some American influences of coke and the WcDonalds.
Yes, W, interesting, an upside down M. Overall, the art is decent, however, amateur at best."
41-inches-wide #2
Emma (Shauna appears to be gone, and hasn't been on in awhile, so I got her friend, Emma, who is also in the pic, to write one, albeit a very short one xD):
"I liked it."
DP:
"Another anime inspired artwork. Two girls in a bed, and if it weren't art, I'd say it's slightly lesbian, but in the same sense, sleepovers are just what girls do.
I remember many a sleepover I have had with girls who loved the idea of having a gay man stay in their place, but that was all in college. Either way, I know this suggests nothing of a lesbian overtone, my mind just wanders. The coloring and illustrations are well done."
ValkyrieWing #1
Resha:
"I like the style of picture and how it's in black and white; it adds a lot of atmosphere to the picture.
The features of Dylan are a little off, but only slightly, and other than that it's great."
DP:
"Man, I almost wanted this to be "Loony BoB Dylan". However, I'll suspend my anticipations in order to judge fairly. I know the poster that you are trying to cover, and for the most part, this is done well in the style that you are doing it in. The lack of definite detail is nice, such as on the shirt, however, that line above the lips that defines it, it just seems out of place. Too sharp for a very gentle picture. His hair is well done, and the face bears a nice resemblence."
ValkryieWing #2
Kitsune No'Kage:
"Over all I think you grasped the challenge quite well, even for being as open as it was. This picture does an exelent job of representing both sides of the same person, and depicted in the struggle against eachother is an exelent choice.
The calm rational hero vs the raving manman villain. I admitt I was a little suprised to see two figires in the picture, but as I can see they are in reality the same person. An exelent job depicting the struggle between good and evil."
DP:
"Regardless, silver vs. black, or white vs. black, either works.
The white angel is obviously benevolent, appearing above, with light behind it, thrusting downwards on the dark angel who comes from the darkness.
Classic heavenly angel vs. malevolent angel. We've seen it.
On the light side, I like the wings of the dark angel and its outfit over-all. The backdrop is also nicely done."
41-inches-wide and ValkyrieWing:
tan:
It's a very peaceful piece, and the coloring is nice. It's a bit too cartoony for my taste, but it's a decent piece overall.
DP:
"Is that an oil spill in the water or a reflection of what looks like the mast of a row-boat. This seems to be going towards realism, but at the same time, it's a little off. I do like the coloring though.
I suppose the skydrop is nice as well, although, the hills look a little like desert dunes."
Team Dionysus: Omecle and Mum
Mum #1
tan:
This is the kind of work I'd expect from you, Mum. The background is great (even though it wasn't white like I wanted it to be), and the coloring on the suit is great, also.
There's only one problem, and it's pretty big: My face isn't exactly drawn right. The face is sort of contorted and it kind of looks bizarre. If you had drawn the face perfectly, I would've given you a perfect score.
DP:
"Is someone trying to score brownie points, if so, try again. The blur is a little annoying, the bow-tie just isn't Bond, but the background resembles the part where people get shot. I can see the familiarity, but at first glance, I almost thought this was Agent Proto. That instantly makes this a terrible piece. However, for the attempt, I'll be merciful."
Mum #2
foa:
"I feel this is an excellent piece, especially given the fact, or so I've been told, that Mum considers landscapes to be a weakness of hers. I believe the use of the single palm tree in the foreground is a creative use of solitary objects in the environment. In reality, I expected a fairly typical landscape, viewed at somewhat of a distance, but I was pleasantly surprised when I was wrong, wrong, wrong. I'm also glad she elected to bring forth multiple emotions in one piece, instead of sticking strictly to solitude.
The only thing I'm even close to being dissatisfied with is the lack of detail in the background. I feel that if it were more detailed, the viewer would be given a better idea of solitude as the result of having the knowledge that different things were going on around them, but they were alone, and at peace with that. However, given time constraints, and the fact that the quality of the piece is marred by the blurriness of the camera, I'm giving that less consideration than I would if I viewed the piece in up close in real life."
DP:
"Interesting perspective for the camera of this landscape. Very brilliant coloring and illustration of the palm tree in the foreground as well as the rest of the island backdrop. The clouds in the sky are nice, and over-all, the picture is very relaxing and cool to look at. This really makes me want to go to Maui."
Omecle #1
lionx:
I like it. I like how the object and cat have such light shading, but theres no background so.^^; But it shows good shading and use of space otherwise :3
DP:
"What, is that garfield? Silly artists, when will you learn; Garfield is best left in the comics. Further: Garfield should have lasagna or be sleeping because he was lazy. If you're going to draw a cat, don't make him look like Garfield. Redeeming qualities include the cat's suit.
Not to mention the piano and its shadow is done well."
Omecle #2
nik0tine:
"Its incredible the color scheme is excellent. The colors are kind of "murky" and they make the picture slightly less clear, which is perfect, because memories are never 100% clear. It has a dreamlike quality to it and everything blends so nicely. This is very, very good. One of the better peices of art I've seen at EoFF. Ever. Hmm... I was hoping to see the pink laces highlighting childrens' faces, but it's not a big deal that it isn't there at all."
DP:
"I think this is a rather intersting piece. It looks as though this is an extended practice dance hall.
It certainly can't be a stage and this is why. Stages are more wide than they are deep.
The rafters, lights, and chandeliers are well done in the picture, and the pink streamer, interpretive dance mid action, breathtaking.
The floor and how impecable it is is also pleasing. Detail and craft was put into this work."
Mum and Omecle:
Reles:
"It looks very realistic and I love how the hair looks and the colors are amazing. Hm..the right side of her mouth looks odd, ya know? But that's all I really see. [It exceeded my expectations.]"
DP:
"All I can say is that the visible eye is remarkable. It almost looks like a picture.
The art is well illustrated and colored.
The tilt of the head and the facial structure, the character seems rather intriguing.
I'm not sure what she is thinking. The warmth of the picture, and her face, really don't seem to go.
I think with that facial feature a cooler, more blue tone would be better."
Results
First off, I'd like to say congratulations to all of you for making it this far. Mum and ValkyrieWing, you two have been in this competition the whole way, which I'm very thankful for. All but one of you have won at least one challenge, and Omecle's only been in this for two challenges, and had he appeared earlier, he most likely would have won one.
Secondly, to further ensure favoritism (in which a client gave someone they liked a high score) didn't occur, I threw out the highest score from each contestants' averages, which levelled the playing field for everyone.
Team Imagine, you two scored very well with your clients, though DP scored you very harshly. Both of you had 3 average pieces. None of them were really memorable, honestly.
Team Dionysus, you two scored very poorly on your first pieces. Maybe if you had taken your time and done them you would've done better. Your second and third pieces were both great, though.
...
And the winning team is...
(SPOILER)Team Dionysus, congratulations, you're the winner of this challenge. Omecle, you had the highest average score (out of everyone) of 8.18. Your second picture was the one that won it for you, and it's quite obvious that it had the highest scores out of all of them. As for you Mum, you had the lowest average score out of everyone in this challenge, but because your partner won, both of you pass on to the final challenge. Both of you are now finalists.
This means that....
(SPOILER)Team Imagine, you're the losing team of this challenge. Both of you did acceptionally well on all of your pieces, but none of you shined for this challenge.
(SPOILER)ValkyrieWing and 41-inches-wide: one of you will be accepted and one of you will be erased.
...
(SPOILER)ValkyrieWing, your pieces did acceptionally well, but the third piece dragged your average down. You could've drawn it very well, which would've provided an excellent foundation for your partner to add to, but you didn't.
....
(SPOILER)41-inches-wide, your pieces were also acceptional, but none of them were excellent. You also turned in a piece two days late, which may mean that you won't have time for the finale. We don't want you having to put your school life on hold just for this competition.
And...
(SPOILER)ValkyrieWing, 41-inches-wide, both of you... had the same average of 7.06, so I will leave it up to you two to decide who you believe should be erased between the two of you. I want your response by tomorrow or else I will choose who is erased.
I'll post the final challenge's rules up tomorrow, when we decide who's erased.
Before I look at the scores, I'm just going to say it now. DP is an aweful reviewer, get a better one next time.
Edit: Okay, congratulations to Mum and myself for getting in. And I think that ending was poor, you can't just give them the same score and tell them to settle it on their own.
I demand a showdown!
(And just for DP's information, the cat looks nothing like Garfield and it was meant to be related to the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland (hinted at the little quote I put there).
This challenge is so funny, well for me anyway! :3 And it's so hard.
The pieces from Dionysus (congratulations :D~) and Valkyrie's are so remarkable!
I wish I could've done a better job, but hey anime is all I could do, and I'm inimical to change. So I request to be eliminated, for personal and technical reasons. I want to give Valkyrie the spot in this competition that she deserves.
But fear not. I will still be here in the Top Artist thread, lurking. :D
Thanks again~
I...I dont deserve this. I don't deserve to be in the final three.
I would prefer some sort of draw-off.
Silly VW, of course you do. Anyway I refuse to do a showdown... I mean, what for? I asked for elimination anyway. :3
I...I am so very sorry, 41! Hopefully, you can forgive me....
And so this small chapter comes to a close, after watching both teams struggle for time and energy to finish their projects in the mist of what we call life they are greeted only by harsh words.
Ode to the fool, who thinks only of himself.
Let him be silent and forgotton.
An exelent job to both teams, your art was exeptional. I hope to see more, but the question I have is this: Whats next?
:tonberry:
Okay then.
41-inches-wide, you're erased. You were a great contestant. I hope you come back for the next "season" which is during the summer, so I think you'd actually have time to do it :D
This means that ValkyrieWing is accepted. Congratulations on making it to the final three.
I'll post the final challenge when I get back from school today. I'd like to (again) congratulate those who are in the final 3: Omecle, Mum, and ValkyrieWing. I think this will definitely be a great finale.
Oh, and, you three finalists, please be sure you won't be too busy for about the next month or so. That's just a hint for what's to come ;)
Well, as of the 30th I won't be around at all.
WTF? Dignified Pauper was a terrible reviewer. I think we would all appreciate reviews that display a certain level of artistic knowledge rather than the flitting, uncultured likes and dislikes of an individual. Not to mention the fact that the brevity of his reviews reflects nothing of the time and energy spent by the artists in their creations.
I still can't see why you couldn't wait three hours to get my detailed review.
Whatever...
All the entries are awesome! The picture of Reles i love.
I would just like to say thank you. Though I don't deserve to be here.
However, in a lot of ways I'm rather insulted by DP's reviews. Not on mine alone, but on others as well. He was unnecessarily rude and uncaring. It was almost as if he was trying to be as cruel as possible. As an artist, I can say his comments made me feel as if I SHOULDN'T be an artist anymore, and I don't appreciate that at all.
I wasn't able to spend a whole lot of time on this due to personal reasons. I've been working a lot, and my grandfather has been ill. Life got in my way. I can't help that.
Anyway, I'll do my best to prove myself worthy of being in the final three.
...and here I was thinking it was just me and that the judges had it in for me because I'm older and therefore somehow supposed to be doing better artwork.
I too, thought DP was harsh and didn't seem to know what he was talking aboout sometimes. My hubby was especially indignant, being a big Bond fan, about the comment that Bond doesn't do bow ties. Come on! Its a tux - of course hes wearing a bow tie!
In the beginning of this competition, all the judges were picking nice things to say about each picture, whether it was well executed or not, then marked accordingly. Constructive criticism is helpful, but only if its helpful!. Judges are not here to tear our works to pieces, especially if we've worked on them long and hard when there are more pressing things to be done in our respective lives. This is supposed to be friendly and fun, and with these kinds of reviews, well...
Nominus Experse - why don't you give a critique anyway? Why doesn't anyone? Come on - I'd be really interested in hearing what you have to say.
Yes please, Nom. :3
This could be a problem, but I'm not sure yet -_-
First off, you said "I'll have it in tomorrow at 8 PM," not "I'll have it in in three hours." Secondly, if you had turned it in two days ago I would've used them. I wasn't going to wait that long just for you to possibly not turn them in. If I had waited for you, I wouldn't have been able to post the scores as soon as I could. Of course I could've waited but I already had all of the scores and reviews necessary (except one or two) and I wasn't going to hold it off any longer for one person. It may have been wrong of me to ask you to guest judge if I was just going to turn you down, but I thought you'd just write really quick reviews and give the scores, which I would've been fine with. You're angry at me for choosing DP over you, but he turned his in quickly, and even if he had been very harsh in the reviews, he gave fair scores, and I think that justifies him being a guest judge, whether he was a jerk in his reviews or not.
I think he gave you such a bad score for that piece because the execution of it. I sort of agreed with him a bit, mainly because the face in the portrait is blurry and my face sort of looks scrambled. The overall look to it is very nice because the background looks great and so does the suit, but I think that the part where you failed at wasn't the idea, it was more of how you drew me. If you had pulled that off I would've given you a really good score, actually.Quote:

I'm not going to defend what DP said, but when you're looking at art, you don't say, "Oh wow that must've taken a really long time, so I really like it." It's like looking at, for example, an ugly garment. You don't say, "Oh wow that ugly garment must've taken a lot of time to make, so I'll just wear it." When people review things, they don't think about how much effort was put into it; they only look at the end result, and I'm sorry if he offended you but at least he was being honest in his reviews, unlike many past judges. He was trying to be funny in his reviews, and that was insulting as well, so, I'm sorry for that, but I think the scores that he gave were much more important, and I think he gave each entry a fair and well-thought out score.Quote:

Well, I'm looking forward to completeing this. :D
Yeah well, when you asked me to join this competition you said have a month free, which I did. You know, as a person with a real life and such, I've had things come up as of the 30th.
It all comes down to that you could have waited. Why in such a rush? It's just a competition for fun. I know we all would have rather waited a day for the review if we knew it'd be someone who had some sort of artistic knowledge.
The reason he turned it in quickly, is because he went over them quickly. i.e. Had no idea what he was doing. I don't think his harsh marks are fair scores, especially when this is for fun.
I think you're just being biased. You're running this competition, I don't think you should really have a say in the reviews (except for your request of course). So back of a bit man. (Not to mention you gave mum the smallest and most undetailed picture for reference, I don't think she could have drawn you extremely accurate)
Just because you agree with DP, doesn't make it all right.
Of course, you're the one running this competition, duh. I mean, we're not angry at you for him being an idiot. But you could have read over the review before committing to it.
I doubt Nominus Experse would have been biased.
No, you don't, but you also don't rip apart someone's piece as if it were a pile of steaming crap just for shock value.
You don't need to defend him.
It's the same deal as that ugly garmet; just because he was honest, doesn't mean he was a good reviewer.
You can tell him no one really thinks he was funny at all.
Tan, I wasn't mad at you - in fact I never even mentioned you. I pointed out that DP was inaccurate with what he said re a bow tie. (I feel he's shown himself up with a few of his comments, actually.)
You seem to be getting very defensive and taking everything personally, which may be understandable given your position, but as a manager of this you should remove yourself and just professionally administrate. You've done well to get us all this far.
Secondly we never saw any scores for each piece so I couldn't complain about the marking. In fact I said "In the beginning of this competition, all the judges were picking nice things to say about each picture, whether it was well executed or not, then marked accordingly." So I was commenting on DP's comments, not his marking of that particular piece.
I don't need to be told how poor that piece was, Tan, and I'm sorry it was inadequate for you.
I do agree with Omecle that the administrator of the competition shouldnt judge or give any comments, but thats just an opinion and I appreciate may not always be practical.
VW & Omecle, I'm very please that you 2 are in the final - well deserved - and don't you say or think otherwise!
Jowy's computer died, hence why the review took so long to get sent out. :(
Well, I guess if you quit, you quit. After the way you've been acting these last couple of days, it's quite noticeable that you're fed up with me and this competition, and, honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if you quit.
Just because people don't have artistic knowledge, doesn't mean they can't have an opinion about art. Should I watch a movie and say, "Oh, since I'm not a director, I can't think anything of this movie. Oh well."?Quote:

For all 3 of you this is your serious wake-up call, because it shows that you shouldn't just rely on everyone to consider your feelings and just say it's good. That doesn't get you anywhere. In my opinion, if you want to do anything in life, you have to take what you have been criticized for, and change that. DP was, oddly enough, a learning experience for all of us. Yes, his reviews were harsh, but, at least they were truthful in the spots where he was being serious (which was about 90% of all of the reviews). I suspect I will get an even harsher judge panel for the final challenge (it is the finale, after all) and if you know what's good for you, you'll take these things you've learned from all of the reviews and turn them into the best collection ever (which I'll explain in the rules for the next challenge :D). I realize that constructive criticism doesn't need to be harsh, but DP did give people good scores for the pictures he thought were well-done, and it's obvious that Omecle deserved to win because he did draw two very good pieces. To be constructive, you need to be harsh, even if only a bit, so the person you're criticizing takes what you says, and applies it in future drawings.
I'm being biased? It was my request. As the requester, I can have opinions about it, whether I'm the competition runner or not. I agreed with some things he said, even though he said them in a harsh way. I'm not being biased for agreeing with him on a picture I requested, and you even said "except for your request of course." It's my request, isn't it?Quote:

It doesn't justify the mean unnecessary things he said, but, the things he said while he was being serious were only harsh because he didn't sugarcoat them. He's actually been the most honest judge so far, and I think all of you are just too used to hear all these compliments about your pictures because everyone here is too nice, and anyone who gives a negative comment is suddenly a jerk. If he said in any of the reviews, "Oh this sucks," then of course I'd be agreeing with you, but at least he added in a compliment for every review, and in your blind fury, you didn't notice this. Not all of his reviews were just negative comments. In my opinion, it's better to hear what's worse in something that you take pride in making rather than the good things because you can always improve, and only hearing the good while only swell your ego. Don't blame me for knocking you down a peg.Quote:

Had he sugarcoated the bad reviews with a few more comments, you most likely would've been less upset.Quote:

So, you'd rather someone lie to you and tell you your picture looks good? A good reviewer is an honest reviewer, because they tell you what you need to improve on, which, in my opinion is 10x better than just saying they thought it was good. Yes, your past reviews have shown you both the good and the bad of your pieces, but it seems as though the good outweighed the bad in every review every time. This reminds me of when I judged, because I had to hold back because I didn't want to offend any of you, and now that you've experienced someone who hasn't held back, you're completely shocked. He didn't rip your entries up into pieces and say you all sucked and you have no hope. He gave you constructive criticism through showing you what you did wrong, even if he did this in a rude way.
You can tell him no one really thinks he was funny at all.
And now all of you are attacking me for being a guest judge and judge. I didn't hear complaints the first time I did it (a few challenges back) so I dont' see why you're insulting me now. Just because I'm a competition runner, does not mean I can't have an opinion about your work. I think you and Omecle are really pointing out that I don't have much art experience, due to the fact that you've noticed I don't post any art here. As for the fact that you guys are angry for DP because you think he has no art experience, let me just say this in his (and my) defense: Do you really believe people who review movies actually make movies? Should Ebert and Roeper not be allowed to review movies simply for the fact that they don't make them? Does that make their opinions invalid? Should people who don't make clothes be able to have an opinion about top designers' clothes? The list goes on and on, and you guys are complaining because you're not getting "knowledgeable" people to review your pieces. Whether our opinions may be untrained or not in art does not make them suddenly worthless. He may be untrained in it, but if he shows you your mistakes, you could fix them. Anyone can give an opinion and that's what these reviews are. And, as DP showed, apparently there are bad opinions as well.
In the end, all of you are angry at me for letting you hear the things you heard about your pieces. I realize this is a fun competition, but does it have to be fake and sugarcoated? That just doesn't seem right. I see you artists as people who grow with every picture and every review, and showing you the mistakes you made in these entries may prevent you from making them again when it is actually crucial (maybe you'll become a famous artist one day through learning from your mistakes and perfecting your work :D). The main reason most of you seem angry is that he insulted your hard work, but not everyone in life is going to make you feel good by lying to you, and that's a proven fact in life.
All of you expect to hear all of the good things about your pictures, and only one or two bad things. Marick didn't do that, and he highlighted the bad parts of your entries, and you consider that rude. Oh well. I will say that he did say mean things and I won't deny that, but I don't see his critique as being 100% invalid, because he did point out a lot of good things.
As Marick said in a letter to me (through e-mail):
And I leave you with that quote.Quote:

I'll just say this. I did the best I could, considering what was going on. Am I hurt by the comments? Hell yes. But I'll live. And I'm an artist despite what anyone says.
Deal.
Ok, VW is done. :3
Okay, I get pretty defensive sometimes, so I'm sorry for that.
To Tan: I hardly even talk to you, so please don't assume what I've been like the last couple of days.
Sure, he can be serious about the reviews, but I think he was just trying to be harsh like he was for shock value. Either that or he has a pole up his butt.
I don't care what scores he gave us, that didn't really have anything to do with it (hell, we didn't even see the scores, just the end ones). Just the things he said.
I'm really not bothered by having told my piece isn't that good, it was just the way he put it.
To DP: This is a video game internet forum. Do you really expect us to take your harsh remakes so lightly when we're just in this for fun? We've juggled around our own lives a lot to get these done, so it just gets annoying when you so brutally discredit our work the way you did. Especially when we're not showcasing art professionally.
I'm pretty sure we can take your criticism, but the way you put it was uncalled for. And I'm not just talking about what you said for my pieces.
Anyway, I'll talk to you on MSN Tan, it's probably best not to spam up this forum, lol.
(Just on a side note, Mum had no idea it was a thumbnail, so she was working off the little picture. At least, I think so.)
Edit:
I should have been more reserved with my feelings like VW, sorry guys. ^^;
*butts in*
Can I be a guest judge sometime? Just someone extra. :3
LOL
I'm generally reserved. I DID rant at my boyfriend about it, though...LOL
I would be honored if you could be a guest judge for the final challenge :D
Just as long as you don't cause as much of an outrage as DP did, I'm fine with it xD (just kidding)
Anyway, final challenge's rules:
Final Challenge- Finale
This is it. This is the last challenge that will decide your fate in this competition. There are 3 of you left. After this one, there will only be EoFF's Top Artist.
This challenge is to create an 8-piece collection over the course of two months. There are no exact restrictions to what you can draw; you can draw whatever you want, as long as it sums up your style and shows the best of your ability.
Your collections must be cohesive, so doing random pictures would not be in your best interest. You could, for example, draw eight pictures surrounding one word, because it would smoothly flow and the ideas could be connected from one piece to another.
After you have made your 8-piece collections, you will be making a video with them, complete with music. As you have seen before, I can make videos, so I can help you, but if you want someone else who is better than me at doing them, you can ask them to do it, as long as it ends up as a video. I will not be taking your pictures and turning it into a video; you need to know what music you want, what you want it to look like, what transitions you want to use, etc. I'll go more into this video once you have turned them in.
Guidelines for collections
-You may not use ANY pieces you have already done in the past; Mum, I know, has her own online gallery, so she could easily use 8 old ones, but I trust her enough not to do this :)
-No outside help, unless they are just critiquing you as you go along (no one can draw it for you)
-You may ask a fellow contestant for their opinion of your pieces as you're going along, but you may not want to do this because it may spark subconcious cheating (seeing a picture, getting an inspiration, creating a somewhat similar piece)
-Name your collection with one or two words; whether the title is relevant or not to the pieces does not matter
That's about it for guidelines. If you have a question, then I'm always free.
The judging system will be a bit different this time: there will be a panel of 6 judges (I am one of them, if you don't mind) and each will be casting a vote for their favorite collection. Of course, this may end up as a tie, which is why there will be a seventh vote taken from the public. So, there will be a poll asking which collection they thought was the best, and whoever gets the most votes gets the seventh vote. These panel of judges will be talking about the collections together and giving their opinions on each; whether or not I can get them all in one #eoff chat room at the same time for about 30 minutes or so with none of them leaving will be the challenge (for me) o_o
I will warn you now: do not procrastinate this challenge. If you end up slacking because you think two months is a lot, you'll probably end up doing it last minute with very sloppy results. I will be checking up on you around the half-way mark to see where you are, to give you advice, etc.
And so, the cut-off deadline for this will be January 15th, 2007. Its the longest deadline you've had so far, so I hope you make the best of your time.
The following week after that will be EoFF's Art Week (well, I'm just calling it that, they won't actually celebrate it or anything xD) in which all 3 artists show their collections. The extra week is to create the video. The line-up of who shows on what day (different people will show on different days) will be decided then.
So, this thread is going to become quite dead during that break (for us onlookers at least), but Leeza assured me that if we come back after a month and no one's responded, she won't lock up the thread for reviving a dead thread :D
ANNOUNCEMENT- Omecle has dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. Mum, ValkyrieWing, if either of you have important things to do (like, huge tasks) I will change the number of pieces due (if I must) so you don't have to drop out. Anyway, this third spot is open to anyone who participated in this competition as a contestant, and who has time to do it. If not chosen by next week, I guess we'll just have a one-on-one with ValkyrieWing and Mum =P
Before I leave, I want to give some advice to Mum and ValkyrieWing as to what they should or should not do for their collections.
ValkyrieWing- Your execution, detail, and color-choice are perfect when you expand and do as much possible to your pieces. I would advise you to take each piece at a time and draw them with much diligence. If you can pull off a collection that looks well-executed and well-thought out, you'll definitely have a high chance of winning. As for what you shouldn't do... hmmm... you shouldn't rush, because that seems to end up with you having a sort of lacklustre piece with much to be desired. Again, just take your time, but not too much time as to run out of it. I also think it would be interesting to start seeing new perspectives while you're drawing, like an over-head perspective or a bottom-looking-up perspective. Also, it seems like female characters are definitely your strong point, so sticking to them would be wise, but also try to branch out and do a couple of male characters, but, if they end up looking odd, then just use the female characters as your Plan B when all else fails.
Mum- Yes, I slaughtered you in my review two challenges ago because you weren't creative. You have the skill and talent to make these pieces look great, but with creativity, you don't seem to branch out much. I think it would be very interesting to see more pictures like the one you created for the seven sins challenge, and that was actually my favorite piece from you out of all of the challenges. Just be creative, yet still keep the execution. Just as I said to ValkyrieWing, don't rush, because, as you it seemed like you did with a couple of the requests last challenge, it doesn't end up well. I liked your first challenge's pencil drawing, so, maybe trying to incorporate that into your collection would look really good as well. The judges will definitely love anything you create, creative or not, but I want you to step out of the box and create something beautiful with the imagination you have, because we haven't seen all of that this round of challenges. That's basically all the advice I can give you :)
Anyway, you have your challenge, so I hope you make the best of it and create a great collection!
Well...
Best of luck, Mum. I hope to see your best. I'll certainly be bringing mine. :)
And thank GOODNESS I'm getting better at drawing males...!
Ah, I can do paintings but I cant do the video.
1. I dont have a computer you see, and I just use work's computer to send the pics (they're quite strick with usage and i even have to hide writing these!).
2. I wouldnt have the first clue how.
So should I default?
I am happy to do so - I've had fun, and VW is clearly the best EOFF artist left.
Or to perpetuate the competition, and so Tan isn't disappointed, should someone else take my place (who was in the competition before?)
NO!
Mum, you can't quit~ I'd be so sad....
Mum, if you so desire it, I could try and aid you to the best of my ability. I am also sure tan would try and work around your situation.
I sent a PM asking tan if I could rejoin the competition, but I would much rather be competing, if tan allows my presence once more, against the two of you rather than simply VW, you know?
YES PLEASE!
I'd ~love~ to compete against the both of you. That would be the best thing ever for me, i think....I respect you both and you're amazing artists. What better oppritunity to prove myself?
Yeah I'm sorry about pulling out. I was thinking that maybe I could juggle it with all the things going on, but I really don't want to take that risk and ruin the competition for everyone.
I've got my girlfriend coming up for a couple of weeks, who I haven't seen for a few months. So I'm going to spend every chance I can with her.
Then I'm moving back down to my own city, so that makes it harder...
Kind of a shame, because I had actually studied video editing and audio engineering for a few years, so this would have been a good chance to use that. ^^; Oh well.
I wish the best of luck to Mum and ValkyrieWing, and whoever else decides to join them in this final battle. You guys are amazing artists, way better than anything I could ever achieve. Good luck.
Sure, if its allowed I could do all the artwork then hand over to someone in the know to set it to a video with say music of my choice?
I'm in the Adjudicator's hands...
I am here as a video maker, and so is Nominus, though I bet he is definitely better at it than me =P
Yes, sure, that is fine. Just as long as you choose the music.
On the topic of Nominus:
I'd be ectstatic for him to come back, so long as he has the time to do it. He has presented the options, however, to Mum and ValkyrieWing for options if he were to rejoin:
So, I think we've got our third contestant :DQuote:

Me too! I welcome Nom back, and I'll get on with the paintings and contact you Tan to see if you can string them together later on.
I already have my theme, and the 8 paintings worked out and named. Last night I even drew out 2 of them! I'm very inspired! I also have chosen what music I want the video set to. I hope I'm just as inspired in a couple of months time after they're not turning out how I want..!
Some will be pastels and some will be watercolours this time - I haven't done watercolours since 1999!
I'm very excited to see what Nom and VW do - its going to be great!
I don't expect Nom to submit any additional paintings to be back in the contest, btw. Just pleased hes in still.
Why thank you two for accepting me back into the contest.
As for my theme, think of screws, people, marionettes, and exposed hearts, even some intimate love pieces, all done in the surreal-murky-Nominus style.
It's somewhat macabre. Surprising, I know...
:cat:
It's nice to see everyone happy again :)
Yay for the final challenge!~ Best of luck to the three.
And thank you tan, I will see to it that I will guest judge accordingly.
It's a good thing I don't sleep much...
Best of luck to the finalists..
:)
My theme's going to be the elements. Fire, ari, ect.
I have 2 done so far.
Good luck everyone!
I will be checking up on all of you December 16, which is the approximate half-way point. I know most of you are only done with about two or so, which is fine, just as long as I get a general idea of what you're trying to create. I'll be looking at the pieces you've created and giving my opinion, but whether you actually follow them or not is up to you.
Anyway, for those who wish to compete in the next round of this competition, I will be starting it just before the beginning of summer, so mostly everyone will be free to draw. This time I will only be taking 8 contestants, so there will be less challenges, meaning less people dropping out (I hope). I learned that just asking anyone who wants to compete usually ends up with them dropping out, so this time I will only be extending invitations to compete, and only those who have invitations to compete will be able to. I will be extending invitations to 16 of you, which then will be narrowed down to 8 with the semi-final challenge. And what must one do to get an invitation? I will looking at the art forums often, and anyone who I am impressed with will get an invitation. You may also post in the thread some art work that you want to show me, which may or may not get you one.
Oh, and, anyone who has any ideas for challenges can come contact me, and I'll let you be the guest judge for that challenge since you thought it up :)
I know there have been complaints about this competition on how the deadlines were too short, there was too much drama, etc., but I've learned a lot about what I should do next time (such as not butcher a judge's review, which is what happened in the beginning and I lost all 3 of them after that point o_o). I know some have complained about the format, but if I was to make a thread that gives challenges and just asks people to submit, it wouldn't be a competition. I like this format because I think it is competitive, and that's the whole point of it, which is to find the best artist that can be flexible and creative in their art.
Oh, and, just a word to the finalists, you three will not be able to compete in next round, whether you win or not. I'd like to give a chance for anyone to compete, and since you have already made it this far, letting you compete again would be unfair for those who do want. All 3 of you will always be welcome to be judges/guest judges, however :)
Yes, I know I'm getting ahead of myself with all this talk about next round, but I need something to ramble on about, you know =P
And to the three finalists: good luck with drawing your entries, and if you have any concerns, I'm always here to help.
Hi guys!
I have completed 7 out of the 13 I have drawn out and started, then I will choose the best 8 to submit. (I'll use all of them for an upcoming exhibition, so thanks for the idea.) I think I have picked my song for the music too.
My theme is TIME.
Tan, are you judging this final round? If not, should/could I submit them to you on trial for you to help choose which you think would be best for this challenge? Or is that inappropriate, guys?
Opinions please.
If you are judging, Tan, then I think it would be fairer for me to choose.
I see from your previous entry that you are available to critique before official submission. Should I email them to you?
VW: great theme! I can just imagine your fire one...!
What are you doing your series on NE?
I plan to have my series be loosely held together by the theme of struggle in its many forms. Thus, this encompasses everything from love to sexual frustration.
And, naturally, it's done in my style, whatever murky... thing... that is.
Hello everyone!
It's the half-way point, which means I'll be seeing the contestants' finished art thus far and giving them my opinions. Mum e-mailed me hers two days ago because she wouldn't have e-mail access today, I believe, so that just leaves ValkyrieWing and Nominus Experse. I have my expectations very high, and I'll do my best to guide them and give them advice.
EDIT: Oh, uh, I forgot to talk about something in the rules, I think. In your video, as well in your posting of the entries, the last picture shown will be your featured picture, the one you consider the best. This does not mean that you need to draw 9 pictures; simply pick one out that you find the best. Or, as in ValkyrieWing's collection, you could just take all of your collection and put the characters all into one picture, but this is just an example. Sorry I forgot to tell you, but this won't change much besides you telling which one you thought was best by featuring it at the end.
EDIT (again): I've been slacking off and have yet to find the panel of seven judges, but since I promised 41-inches-wide a spot, and I myself will be a judge, that leaves 5. I'm also hoping to ask a friend from school who's experienced with art to join in, though I don't know how outspoken he'll be in his reviews, but we'll see. If you'd like to be a judge for this challenge please PM me. Only requirements are that you can get into #eoff and that you have little to no association with the contestants. This means that one of my recent judges (can't remember her name, sorry xD) who was friends with ValkyrieWing won't be able to guest judge, so, uh, yeah. I'll be sending PMs to various people who I want to guest judge and I'll set up a time for us to meet, whether it be #eoff, Y!M, AIM, or MSN Messenger. But, of course, this will be after the final collections are revealed, but I'm just planning ahead =P
I want to have the judges give at least two paragraphs per piece of artwork. If they cannot do this, than they are not competent as judges. There are artistic princepals that every artist knows, and every judge ought to know these as well. There are more than enough aspects of each piece of artwork to make two complete, coherant paragraphs.
No artist wants to see "oh, this is nice. 6/10". I want to see why the smurf it's nice, or why it's not. If I see any of this loose-ended :skull::skull::skull::skull:, I am going to be pissed.
And there haven't been enough technical critigues that have cited what is wrong with the picture. There is always at least one thing found to be wrong, but everyone knows that there are usually more than simply one thing wrong with each picture. When I say wrong, I mean not perfect.
DP tried this, but ultimately failed. I want to see a judge actually be brutal, but also make sense with what they write. The public is brutal, the real world is brutal. Artists are not supposed to have friends in the artistic world. It would shame me to have the review of a favoured judge.
So all you who seek to be judges, do not dissappoint, please. You owe us this right.
This competition is supposed to be fun, but the end product is always serious. The judging shouldn't be any less so.
I agree with NE that the judging will be much more valid and interesting if it is detailed. VW, NE and I are putting a lot of effort into our creations, and deserve effort put into examining and reviewing them. A couple of paragraphs minimum should uncover the judges thoughts well.
Judges, you can criticise NE all he likes - as he obviously wants it and can take it. (I think he's an exceptional artist, personally, who uses great detail.)
But I am one of those artists who is a sensitive, emotional kind, and as I feel there is enough brutality in the world (like NE says), you can be just as kind with me as you like! Score accordingly of course, but critique in a gentle and instructive kind of way for me please. Theres no need to be brutal. The message will still be fully taken on board, believe me, and I will try to learn from all suggestions. I excel more from enthusiastic helpfulness than being crushed under scornful criticism - just the way I'm made!
Keep in mind each artist's techniques and material - one who uses a computer has different parameters than one who uses raw materials. The paintings will not be able to turn out the same qualities, and each medium has its own limitations in its management and execution.
I'm really looking forward to seeing all the wonderful paintings VW & NE have done. Have a wonderful Christmas break everyone!
Tan, for the next competition, as us 3 finalists are not eligible, I would be delighted to judge if you like.
tan, we want your confirmation in this matter. Or, at the very least, your thoughts.
Sorry I haven't replied to any of this (or your artwork, Nominus), but I've been extremely busy lately, so I've had to stay away from here.
Anyway, I do want the judges to be brutal, because, honestly, whether you're emotional or not, covering up the fact that one of your pieces doesn't look very good by wording it gently isn't going to do anything for anyone. Marick was somewhat rude in his reviews, yes, but I want the judges to give critiques like him, because, honestly, this is the final challenge, and if a piece isn't good, the judges should just say it outright, not in a sentence like "Oh, it isn't the best, but you can do better!" As I've said before, sugarcoating something doesn't help anyone.
The reviews will be brutal, whether you like it or not. A brutal review does not mean that you are worthless as an artist but, rather, that you need to improve on some of your techniques. I'll be sure to tell the judges to give positives and negatives to each piece, and I'll be sure to tell them not to be just downright rude (as in saying, "Oh this piece sucks" as some of you think Marick somehow told you in his reviews). I hate when people are fake, and when they are being fake to you in reviews so they don't hurt your feelings, they (and you, who is demanding that they gently word everything) are not respecting you as an artist. This is because as artists, you should be able to take negative feedback, whether you believe it to be "rude" or not, and turn it into something positive.
Now, if you really don't want to see their reviews because you think they'll be too harsh, just don't read the reviews.
I think what should be kept in mind is that you don't say "The background is horrid, what is the bow tie there for? Ugh." etc. and instead say "I liked what you did with this, this and this. I think that you could have improved it by doing this."
You guys need to keep in mind that art isn't done in a week. Chances are they know what they could improve on anyway, they just didn't have the time.
I've been known as my Mum's biggest art critic over the years - and I give her rave reviews on many occasions. If there's something that I didn't think was done right - be it something being too big, too small, too bright, too dark, the wrong colour, I tell her. But there is never a need to be brutal with someone who doesn't appreciate it. Some people may enjoy it, but only if they ask for it. There are two ways you can drive people to improve in this world - encourage them to do so or demand they do so. Do you think Bill Gates got rich because his father told him the way he did his work was crap? I don't know about you, but the driving force behind my achievements can often be people. A push in the right direction is good, but only if it's a push, not a shove. If I was told "Hey, why don't you do this?" etc. then I'd be more likely to do it than if I was told "You didn't do it well enough. You fail."
If I was going to be brutal, I would rip a hole in how this comeptition is being run, noting everything that I see as having been done all wrong. If I was going to be productive, I would point out things that I feel weren't done right and suggest ways to improve them, and highlight areas that I see as a success.
Finally, an art critic is nothing without the knowledge of the time and effort it takes to put together a piece of art. I've been to art competitions before, and art exhibitions. They don't go around slating works of art, they go around commenting on them.
I don't think that artists should be slated as if you were Simon Cowell on X-Factor, that's for sure.
Here, I decided to investigate various organisations, competitions and universities noting instructions for judges with regards to commenting.
"All entries are to receive comments. It is important that judges comment with sensitivity, particularly to the experience level of the entrant. Comments, in particular any criticism of the work, should be made in an instructive manner. Additional resources or further information is always welcome."
There is, of course, a difference between giving someone first prize and "going easy" on them with the comments. You can be very harsh and give a good rating, or very light and give a poor rating. Be as harsh as you like with ratings and point systems and rankings etc, but when dealing with someone's artistic ability - particularly when you are not an artist yourself - you should always be sensitive and, when dealing with flaws, you should be constructive rather than keeping it to "I don't think this was done right."
Comparing art is also something you should never really do, as far as I'm concerned. You should judge each piece of art on it's own merit, as art can differ dramatically - as we've seen in this competition!
*gets back to lurking*
Get ready for this one. I'm out if the contest. Not for a personal vendetta or anything, but because i severely sprained my wrist last night. I need to keep it braced, and it's agony to type. Because of this, i will be unable to finish my collection.
Best of luck, Nominus and Mum. I'll be watching closely your presentations. :) And, again, i'm sorry....
smurf
Well, I wish you the best ValkyrieWing and a speedy recovery. Life takes turns that we cannot forsee or immediately absolve, so feel no guilt.
We'll miss you though.
Instead of simply just giving the title of "D/O" (dropped out) to ValkyrieWing, I have decided to give her the title of third place, mostly just because she was one of the few to stick through this whole thing. Thank you for that, ValkyrieWing :)
And, also, Nominus and Mum, I hope you two don't mind her competing next round. I've decided to allow her to do this if she so pleases simply because she was a great contestant this round, and had she shown a final challenge (or had finished it before she had this accident), then I would not have permitted her, but because she didn't make it to the final three, I'll just give her a second chance. I hope you two don't mind this.
And, normally, I'd offer the position to someone who's competed, but because it's already half-way through, I don't think someone could finish a whole collection in a month (without using old pieces, that is).
As a side note: Sorry for not telling you my thoughts on your collection so far Nominus! Things have come up since it's been the last week of school here, such as finals, and I've been extremely busy. I'll be sure to do it within the next two days; I think I'll be busy tomorrow, but probably not. Sorry about the wait :(
Also: Mum will be gone until the 8th of January, if anyone wanted to know.
About the judges: They'll be how they'll be, whether brutal or soft. I can't force them to be mean or to be nice (well, I guess I can, but I won't). We'll simply be meeting in some sort of chat room (or instant messenger medium) and discussing the final collections, then voting on one winner. The person with the most votes wins. Therefore, there won't be long reviews, but we'll be talking about it for quite some time. Also, I've decided to lower the number of judges from 6 to 4, mostly because people are too busy, and 4 would be appropriate (the 5th, and possible tiebreaker, will still be decided by the people here at EoFF).
So, that's basically it. Sorry about your accident ValkyrieWing; I truly do hope to see you compete in the next round!
I'm so sorry to hear about ValkyrieWing's accident.
Tan, I might have some problems regarding that chat/conference thing. I don't have much time for anything else except work, and I just came by to check on the art forum.
If it's any consolation, I will be reviewing each artist's piece still. But if the conference is truly needed, then I'm so sorry. I really won't be able to make it that way.
I know Mum and Nominus Experse will have amazing pieces.
Best o' good marks to the both o' yer!
thanks everyone!
Sorry I've been gone for some time; I've taken somewhat of a hiatus because I've been exhausted and I decided to relax for the holidays.
I've seen both Nominus and Mum's progress on their collections and I must say that I am very impressed. I don't think choosing a winner will be very easy...
Also, I only have 3 judges so far (including me) and I need just one more! I think I'm going to scrap the whole chat idea... No one seems to be able to do it, so I might as well just forget it, though I thought it'd be a good idea. Anyone wanting to guest judge for the final challenge please PM me.
And, also, I'm thinking of pushing back the deadline a couple of weeks because I don't know if I'll have time to do the whole thing on that week, and I still need to set up how it'll work, so I need a bit of time.
Other than that, things have been great, and I can't wait until we get to see the final collections and videos :D
Um... yeah, another week would be something of a saviour, to be honest...
Well, I've made up my mind.
The new deadline will be January 29th, for just the entries. The video will be due February 2nd, and I will plan when the final collections will be shown once I get those. I hope this does not bother Mum- she already has all of her pieces done, so I hope she doesn't get impatient. Anyway, that's all for announcements.
I apologize for being so damned slow, Mum...
EDIT: I had 1.5 tons of freight get dropped on my right forefinger last night at work... Luckily, it's only severely bruised and blistered; however, that being said, I will not be able to draw very well in the next few days or so. Hopefully it heals in a timely manner.
Happy New Year y'all.
I've actually got two pieces that have yet to be finished, and I've been very sick for a fortnight, aso the extra time is very handy.
Its so frustrating being sick over your holidays - they only come once or twice a year and spending them all laid up is not good! I didn't get anything done that I wanted to over the Xmas/NY break! I was going to paint my daughter's bathroom and get my Summerhouse finished and decorated, do the lawns and gardens, do my artwork, visit people, go shopping...ah well. I ended up seeing about 12 DVDs instead...lying on the couch, inbetween coughing and other unmentionable bodily functions.
Being sick sucks.
Seems like the season for everyone to be injured or some such thing too - hope VW & NE heal well soon.
Well, it's healed enough that I can now draw without fear of it bursting blood all over my drawings, but it does still hurt, so it will be slow still. At least it will be moving again... I am already behind as it is...
And yes, Mum, I have also been quite sick myself. It sucks. Flus and fevers are truly something hideous...
What is it, an epidemic? LOL It seems that we've all been afflicted somehow.
Unfortunately, my wrist is healing VERY VERY slowly. I've been trying to draw, but it hasn't been easy. In some ways, it makes me glad that i don't have the pressure of the contest....
I'm looking forward to the results. :)
Tomorrow is the day that the entries are due, and I know that Mum is done with all her pieces because I've already made the rough draft of her final video, so that just means Nominus needs to turn in his entries. I don't know if he'll drop out if he's not done (which I hope not), but I don't think I can extend the date anymore...
Anyway, I'm excited for the final and it'll be great to see what kind of creative and beautiful pieces the two finalists could draw with all this time they got.
Looking forward to seeing everything. :D
I won't drop out, but I will tell you now - I do not have as much done as I had hoped.
What I have is what I have.
I had enough time, but I didn't (or wasn't able to) manage it in manner that would allow me to create enough entries.
Of the six or so hours of free time I am granted each day, I could have chosen to work on my entries for at least an hour or so each day. But I did not. My time devoted to the entries was sporadic and haphazard, with great binges and times of restless abandonment.
Perhaps I lost interest in the contest, or perhaps I simply gave up when I was given sickness after sickness for the entirety of a month or so. Or maybe the loss of passion was due largely in part that I could not devote twenty hours (like I wanted) to each particular piece, and was only capable of eight or so, and in a way, felt cheated.
Or perhaps I just didn't care anymore when I scrapped several of my drawings I had ready for this competition.
Whatever the reason, I have less than what was required of by this competition. My feelings on my actions, and lack thereof, are naturally ones that are punctuated by disappointment and shame, and I am also somewhat chagrined.
In the end, it would appear that my choice to try and make it to the end of this competition was made with far too much haste.
I apologize, for what it is worth, (most notably to) Mum, ValkrieWing, and tan.
What is done is done. So be it.
QUICK UPDATE: EoFF's Top Artist is...
(SPOILER)Mum!
This is because Nominus Experse disqualified himself for not having enough entries for the final challenge.
I would post her final collection, but I want her to post it herself before this thread gets closed and archived; however, I haven't seen her in awhile and I don't know why she hasn't e-mailed me back. If she doesn't come back soon, I request that one of the CKs archive this thread, and when she does come back I ask that you allow her to post her final collection in a different thread.
Anyway, it was sort of a bittersweet competition the whole way through, and I do want to do this again, but next time we will actually go through preliminaries to be sure that we get the best of the best. Check the Artist's Forum around May for it to come back! :D
Wow...i never thought it would end like this.
congrats mum :D and happy mothers day~
looking forward to see your work again
Well, I was hoping that the final challenge wouldn't end up like the rest of the competition did (where someone just ended up dropping out and no one gets eliminated, but in this case 2 people dropping out and one person winning the competition). I don't know whether it was the timing of when I gave the challenges, how much time I gave for the challenges, or even just the challenges themselves, but it all sort of just ended up this way. I do believe that this competition did succeed at one thing, though, and that is that it showed the rest of the forum the hidden artistic talents of you, Mum, and Nominus, along with the other competitors, even if they were eliminated. Though it didn't turn out to be a grand finale, I do believe it was a satisfying finale, because at least we got one final collection, rather than naming no one as EoFF's Top Artist because everyone dropped out. As I said before, it was bittersweet.
As for Nominus, I have decided that I will allow him to join the next round of the competition in May if he wants to join it. Though he is a really meticulous artist that does sometimes miss the deadlines, I do believe that if he were to come back it would be a great competition again.
I will be watching the Artist's Forum now and then and deciding on who I want to compete and sending them invitations, so if anyone didn't get to compete this time around, if I notice them they may be able to be in the next round. I have also decided to cut down the number of competitors to 8 (from 12 this round) just so things get moving quicker and people don't have to stay attached to this competition for so long. I may even cut it down to 6 (and the final challenge competitors to 2) but who knows.
I'll see you all in May for the next round of EoFF's Top Artist! :D
"I would post her final collection, but I want her to post it herself before this thread gets closed and archived; however, I haven't seen her in awhile and I don't know why she hasn't e-mailed me back."
Sorry Tan, I haven't received any emails since you sent the draft of the video. I sent back an email saying a couple of changes and you replied "I'll get your video as soon as I can (I just need to fix a few things with it) and I'll post it on Youtube where everyone can watch it. I'll make the announcement soon and then you can post your final collection and its video."
Thanks for naming me the top artist, even if I did win by default. I feel pleased with the pics that I did and I'm also pleased that I was able to complete each round, so thats something.
Do you have the address of where the video is so I can email it to my friends so they can see? Did you want to send me the final version first?
I was excited by this final challenge and chose "TIME" as my theme. I drew out 18 pics, completed 12 and chose these final 8 to submit. Tan kindly did the video for me under my direction.
Here are the first 5:
...and here are the other 3:
(If you hover your mouse over the image it shows the titles)
great pics mum. also to tan i dont mean this in a bad way just something to note: i think the competition was too long drawn out,i no it takes time to do pictures but in some challenges there were multiple pictures had to be drawn and just in my opinion because evrything took so much time people wernt wiling to commit for one reason or another.i think it wud have been more succesful if it was shorter.
maybe u agree maybe u dont but its just something to think about with the next competition.
Oh yeah, I totally agree. I think that's why so many people dropped out. That's why I'm going to just get 6 competitors with less challenges. I mean, yeah, I'm halving how many there are, but it would probably be wiser for people to commit to this competition for 2 months rather than 4 like I did this competition. I mean, 2 months does sound long, but considering I'm giving two weeks per challenge (besides the final challenge)
Anyway, I'm uploading Mum's video on my Youtube account right now, but it's taking too long to upload, so I'll just post the link tomorrow.
Well, I never really gave a proper sendoff to either Nominus nor ValkyrieWing (as I usually when I announce the results) and I didn't fully give Mum the full congratulations, so...
ValkyrieWing, Nominus Experse, you're both erased. Both of you were great competitors, and I really do hope you can compete in the next round! If you don't want to compete, I would also be honored if you either of you could be a judge/guest judge :D
This means that...
Mum, you are EoFF's Top Artist. Thank you for sticking with this competition, and you truly are (and have been) the best artist in this competition. Your collection was great, and, if this thread stays open any longer, I'll post what my comments were going to be about your collection :D
Ooooh, goody! I can't wait!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKI3SroA5Cw
There you go :D
Again, congratulations for winning Mum! You were a great contestant the whole way through.
Congrats, Mum :) I just saw the video on YouTube, and you've managed to create some truly great pieces - and I loved the way you used your theme.
