Here is the situation we shall ponder in this thread: You have been put in control of a remake of a game. You're the boss man, the big dog, the creme de la Kojima as it were. The only rule is this game can't be from after the year 1999!
What game will you remake? Why?

I think I would remake Vagrant Story.
I havnt even finished it yet but the story so far is great and despite a few chores the gameplay is very deep and fun.
The most important change would probably be making weapon and shield switching a lot quicker and easier. I would probably implement a weapon switching system a la Metal Gear Solid where you hold down a button and it brings up the weapons while pausing the game. This would make the gameplay a LOT quicker because switching weapons for each enemy type was pretty tedious after a while.
But I would keep so that you still needed to specialise one weapon for each monster type.
I would make the graphics top notch but especially so that you can tell what type of monster it is and have a good guess at whether to use piercing, edged or blunt weapons against it. AKA, show whether it has chainmail on or a hard scale so you know you need to use a piercing weapon.
I would use FFXII's voice actors.
I would change the setting a bit so your not fighting in bland dungeons all the time.
I would make magic more useful than it is in the original. I would make it so that the RISK meter does not decrease your chance of successfully casting magic but instead up the MP cost.
Cant think of anything else at the moment.

well first off I would change the battle system to on like on Phantom Brave, just with better graphics, improved difficulty and some new moves. I would also make it so that the game was PC only and that the armor would be changable (hence the PC only title, doubt any console games could have fully changable armor) I would also make it so that you could design your own weapons and armor for the characters. Also would make Ryu's Dragon appearenece change according to A. what level it was and B. what armor Ryu is wearing at that paticular time.

Expand on the combat. Maybe add some combos and a skill system like in Devil May Cry. Different skill set for the four swords. Expand the world and dungeons a little bit. Add more magic and sidequests that involve messing with NPCs using said magic.
What would you do that would be significantly different?
A post game type of thing where you can play as the girl from the end of the game.
Final Fantasy IX
Make Beatrix and Dr. Tot playable, yet different enought o be useful.
Improve graphics, have voice acting, make combat a bit faster, and make the game longer a bit and add some cut-scenes and backstory. (i.e. Freya, Amarant, and Quina.)
It is possible in about 10 years, I suppose.
FF IX came out in 2000/2001.

Right now I'm in my bimonthly Comix Zone obsessive kick, so let's say that. It didn't get the attention it deserved the first time around. Also, the beat-em-up genre doesn't get much love these days.
What would you do to build on the original? What would you do that would be significantly different?
More levels, definitely. What I would like to do is remake the six levels that are already there and call it one story arc. Then I'd like to add a few new story arcs with whole new levels. (For anyone who may be having difficulty following, each level is a page of a comic book, and each "book" has two pages. :P) I would also update the graphics, obviously, since it's from 1995. Everything was drawn by Comic Book artists in the original version, and I'd like to keep that going for the backgrounds, this time with high res images instead of translating everything into pixels.
I'd have to get Howard Drossin back for the soundtrack. He was amazing in the original version and he showed that the songs translate well into more technically advanced music (ie; not chiptunes :P) with the Roadkill album of remixes from the game.
I'm not sure what I'd do with the sprites, though. I'd either like to have high quality Odin Sphere style sprites or something more low key (but still awesome with the thousand frames of animation per character) like Street Fighter III. Or I could throw out sprites all together and use cel shading. That would work really well if implemented right. (And cel shading has come a long way this generation.)
I think it might be nice as a Wii game, if only because the premise is "guy stuck in comic book" any you could totally use the Wiimote to draw stuff, Okami style. :P Being a side-scroller (and possibly completely 2D) it wouldn't really need a lot of graphical power. The camera doesn't even really move, since it's key that everything be completely flat.
God, now I've gotten myself all excited for a game that's never going to exist. xP I need to stop now.
I would remake Doukutsu Monogatari in order to revive King and Toroko. Their deaths ruined the game for me.

Even though the game is awesome already, Grim Fandango! Even if it were just for better graphics and higher resolution. They could spruce up the already awesome dialogue and have the same voice casting, and maybe add in more explorative elements.
But yeah, Grim Fandango is the shiznats and it should be remade.
Zelda: A Link to the Past.
3D remake. I'd leave all of the level/dungeon layouts and everything the same; I just want to see what it'll look like in 3D =P

One Must Fall would probably be pretty sweet with new graphics. But the Original Transport Tycoon I loved a lot as well. Maybe Princess Maker 2.... oh man.... I could go on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on... is that enough yet?
For the sake of this topic I think I will pick Princess Maker 2. As for why... well first a remake would make an official English release. However, more importantly is that I think it is an excellent game that could use a bit of polish.
Changes:Basically just build upon its current potential. Get someone like Leaf-Aquaplus(makers of Utawarerumono game) or maybe age(maker of Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien) to do it. Both have a good track record of strong art and solid games. And Princess Maker would just naturally lend itself to a visual novel style setup. Though it would have a bit lackluster story and more gameplay than many of them. But that is a good thing.
- More Robust Adventure Mode
- Improved Graphics that are basically 3d versions of what is already there. In addition a wider variety of facial expressions perhaps and actually show father and daughter interacting.
- More Robust Parent/Child time/interaction menu.
- Quests/Errands that the daughter can offer to go on. Basically a random job posting that could become available. These would be varied. Perhaps an adventure. Maybe a questionnaire, or maybe just something like a normal job.
- More robust Wardrobe(PM1 already has this so it shouldn't be hard)
- Town visiting/etc to get to see peoples' opinions of daughter/father.
- Re-enter the Miss Kingdom Contest also seen in 1.
- Even more endings and perhaps PM3's Job system for the father would be nice to add in as well.

Well not really, I would just re-release with all its content intact and an accurate translation that completely removes all the obnoxious "westernizing" from it. Beyond that, I would probably fix the little issue with the combat system involving melee weapons.
Remake SMT I and II for the DS with the auto-map on the bottom screen and higher resolution, animated sprites. I would also remove all the silly counter-intuitive design issues like having to go to a store to find out what an item does and add all the improvements Nocturne made to the Jakyo Manor like the Demonic Compendium.
And the press-turn battle system, of course.

Seiken Densetsu 3, because it's awesome and doesn't get as much love as Seiken Densetsu 2 and the other FF spinoffs. (Well the first one was called Final Fantasy Adventure, that counts ;( )

3Dify it. I wouldn't have voice acting. EVER. Make the combat system more involved and the ability to control the other characters more involved (e.g. more than just running at something and button hammering, more than just help me, help her, attack something else) Also I would add more scope for character interaction and development depending on your party. The career paths would give you more cotumes, not just different colours.

Try very hard to scrap Carly and make her more adorable and less annoying. Okay, I lied..I couldn't do that. I would add a multiple player mode. I never understood why you couldn't do that. 3 characters, who require different equipment, all do different things in battle...could run around independently, get different reactions from NPCs...
I would add a comprehendable world map, so you can actually figure out where you are and get a sense of the scope of things, and do some proper exploring and maybe sidequesting outside of the plot. Oh and more sidequests. I'd make the elemental spirit thingies perhaps more involved in these, like you have to use them to activate things or cross gaps or something.
I'd remake FFVII just to shut people up.
I'd leave everything he same except the soundtrack which would receive an overhaul with a combination of new synths and live instruments. Solely for the purpose of annoying anyone who wanted updated graphics, voice overs, and even something as simple as a redone translation.
I would remake it based on the Amano art. Then you would get something that looked awesome while still pissing off FFVII fans.
Nah, Amano art would be cool! You guys are sheep for hating FF7 :p
I bear no ill towards The Venerated One. I just want to make it better at the expense of those whose tastes are not similar to my own.

I would keep things simple and streamlined. I would revamp the inventory system so that it's more intuitive and easy to use - perhaps you could assign loadouts to individuals, rather than craft, so they always have the gear you gave them. But there'd be an auto-equip feature as well, which would try to match available gear with people best suited to it. I would let you set filters so that you could choose better recruits without having to buy a bunch, sort through them, and kick out anyone who has low stats. This wouldn't be free, but it would be useful!
The game would still be divided into the three main parts of combat, geoscape, and management. Obviously, I'd pretty the game up plenty, but especially the geoscape. I would want that view to be a smooth, zoomable, hi-res globe that evokes The Blue Marble.
What would you do that would be significantly different?
There are two main areas of major change:
I'd revamp battles significantly. The core remains the same, which is to say turn based tactical combat. Beyond that, it'd be different. Modern technology would allow for greater battlefield conditions; rain, snow, etc. and these would have ramifications in combat. For instance, high wind would reduce accuracy and affect the move speed of flying units. Rain would reduce visibility. And so forth.
It would still be the same sort of grid it used to be, but aside from being larger, it'd be able to extend much higher. This wouldn't be necessary most of the time, but one of the new environments - CBD - would demand it.
Of course, new environments. There would be quite a few - wilderness, plains, subarctic, and numerous variations for inhabited areas. These would be; Central Business District, urban residential (Much as in the original), industrial, suburban, and small town. Now, this would have an effect beyond just the battlefield itself. It would also change who was there, because there would be a better-developed non-played Human element to the game.
Much, much better. Here's what I'm thinking:
Civilians would usually be present on all urban maps, except perhaps industrial types at night. However, they wouldn't necessarily be the panicked idiots in the first game. Some would flee (Trying to get into civilian vehicles to do so if possible), some would hide, some would try to greet the aliens (At least in the early stages, before the denials have to stop and everyone is fully informed of them), and some would try to fight back. Civilians would, depending on a couple of factors, have a chance of being armed with pistols, shotguns, and rifles. They might keep these until they're cornered, or they might take shots at the aliens from the start.
Factors would be gun laws in the region, and how well-known the alien presence is. Gun laws would probably be loosened as time passes and the alien threat grows greater, unless the aliens subvert the leadership.
This would mean civilians are a more active part of the battlefield; they mostly wouldn't run around in circles, they'd have objectives, and occasionally might even make themselves useful. But beyond the civilians would be police and army. Now, the police would be a moderately organized force, armed with the same kinds of things civilians can have, but also with a smidge of armor. They'd also be the first on the scene, arriving even before X-Com do. They'd seal the area off to prevent more civilians getting in, and their main objective would be trying to get civilians to safety.
The army would be slower to arrive but would, unsurprisingly, be a far tougher force than the popo. They would have decent armor, plenty of men, and serious firepower. They'd make the early game easier than it was in the original; the downside? They would quickly be forced to husband their forces, and be available in fewer areas (No more being deployed to Buttsmurf, Arizona to defend the 12 hicks and 244 cattle!), growing more and more reluctant to deploy outside of major cities and strategic locations. X-Com would be on its own for a majority of missions after mid-game.
The stages of the game: The early game would be before public knowledge of the aliens exists. X-Com is experimental and underfunded, but the aliens aren't doing too much yet. They don't go after targets larger than small towns. Not all governments are convinced about them, and some might not allow bases to be built yet. (Think about it; would Iran allow a multinational alliance composing large numbers of American, British, European, and Japanese forces to establish a very secret base in their heartland, on the basis of fighting aliens?)
At some point the aliens would consider themselves ready, and become more bold. This would mark the end of the early game. They wouldn't just launch themselves straight at Chicago, but their movements and attacks would grow more bold until they did reveal themselves in the first terror attack, and governments have to come clean. They start going after major cities to demoralize us, which is when the armies start getting pulled back and are much less available. On the plus side this convinces sceptical regions to join X-Com, meaning more money and more base building oppurtunities.
Governments would be capable of more, as you may have inferred. Some might try to make open pacts with the aliens; some might suffer under leaders who secretly make deals for their own protection. If one becomes extremely friend to X-Com they might let you give orders to their police and army units, if any are on the battlefield. Very good relations would also make them more forgiving of civilian and property damage, at least in isolated cases.
I could go on. :p But you get the picture. More weapons, more complex and larger battles, and so forth. But underlying it all must be exactly the same as always existed. An atmosphere of tension and fear. The feeling of facing a hopelessly superior force. Turn-based strategy. And Chrysalids.
tl;dr X-Com but better with cops and army and more guns and better graphics.

I would just like Amano's designs if they were consistently as good as the ones in FFVI. They're not though.

I remember having (most of) this conversation with you a while ago. You couldn't have been more right. Hell, all the voices used in the game were just stock samples off the same sound effects CDs used for DOOM, so much so that in the PSX port of DOOM, dying yielded the exact same scream as crushing a bad guy with a tank.Quote:

Didn't someone attempt a full blown mod of some other engine for this game, with the small print of "We'll just trust you not to use the jump button"?
Also, I have some vague recollection of hearing about VC and XBLA versions of this game getting boned by some copyright issues, meaning that by still owning an N64, I am better off than those with any "current" console that's allegedly gonna get all these old games ported over the internet.

I can see how having to buy an expansion pak for it would be annoying, though. I already had one, so that never had a real impact on me. (Didn't DK64 come with an expansion pak in Europe?) Still, the end result was an improvement.
EDIT: If you wanted to use a normal gun, that was always an option too. xP It's not like those were missing.
But its not like you could win on the ridiculous difficulties without them ;-;

I would try and re-make Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2:Solid Snake!
Give them both MGS3 graphics, get Harry Gregson-Williams to do the music, have the same voice talents as the MGS series (Except Big Boss of course, who shall be done by Donald Sutherland but more gruff and American lol), give them more of a challenging storyline, add the shot key in both of them (There wasn't one in either of the games xD), add flashbacks of MG in MG2 so new gamers would understand it more, I would get rid of the owl thing in one of them, keep the tap codes, but provide a guide in the instruction manual....
Basically, I would update them to newer times
EDIT: Oh and probably Castlevania: Symphony of the Night! Just make it uber lol

Add in more depth to Gloria, have a fight involving her and Nero at some point. Gloria as a playable character... paving her way differently through the game and touching on paths that the other two do not.
(SPOILER)She eventually meets up with Dante, at which point she transforms into Trish, changing her style of play... Instead of backtracking she'll shortcut it straight back to the City and have various missions she has to complete within it :D (The other parts of the city ovcourse... it's a pretty large city :D)

Remove/nerf what ruined DMC4. Pandora and Lucifer will be completely revised to keep the game hard. Harder Puzzles for Dante to keep backtracking fun :D?
Erase that pointless third amount of boss fights, it's random and unwanted after killing them all a second time. Instead make a challenging stage involving the interior of the statue, which could be anything really...

Because I'm so anal and such a fan girl that I would keep it 99% accurate to it's original.
I would put MORE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. Especially on Celes and Kefka, for some reason I always felt they got nerfed on the background.

What would I change? Not much gameplay wise. I would keep all the enemies and environments the exact proportions as they were and keep all the game play(physics and what have you) the same. This is so that the actual mechanics and design are not changed which is what made the game so awesome to begin with.
The graphics would be over hauled BIG TIME. We are talking 1080P, high quality 2D art work that flows ever so smoothly. The backgrounds would have tons of depth in the layering.
Sound effects would be over hauled a bit but not so much that they lose what they are. Some songs on the sound track would be getting the same treatment. Maybe a more eerie Maridia perhaps =D
New gameplay modes. Time Attack where it saves what weapons and health you had at the time you faced the boss on that play through. Some fun reshaped map modes where items are in different locations and going through the game but in a different path. What if we made Kraid Stronger and you had to go through the ghost ship first? I think some fun redesigns could be good.
Different difficulty levels. A new mapping system(blank and pink square don't work any more). A new system for scanning areas. I never liked how it worked in the current version of the game. That triangle could be done away with and something more realistic implemented given the technology in that suit.
Enemy spawns could be different so that when you enter a room the enemies are not always in the same spots and there is not always the same number of them.
One final experimental mode where the doors are removed from most areas. Ones where it would make sense to have less doors to keep things more open such as the brinstar while Ghost Ship would maintain most doors still. Enemies would fight each other and act more animalistic. Enemies migrate to different areas and other things. This is just another game mode but who knows.

I would remake Parasite Eve. There are a lot of good ideas in there and a very strong story, but the gameplay left much to be desired. I would probably just make it into a big RE4 clone with magic because I'm lazy and don't feel like being original and don't want to wait for ATB bars. Naturally the graphics will get a huge bump, Aya should run faster than 1/2 MPH, and voice acting would fit the game rather well. They would need to add some spells that were more useful, though. She didn't get too much in the way of attacks in the first one. Aya also has to be a lesbian since all female cops are lesbians. It's just common knowledge.

Firstly, would be a graphical overhaul. A 3D environment, and 3D character models, but still keeping the isometric viewpoint. The view point would have to be able to be rotated, through six positions, so that the hex movement grid will always have a flat edge parallel to the bottom of the screen. Another option I'd add, would be one to show the hex movement grid on the floor. It's something that always drives me nuts, having difficulty telling where I can actually move to. However, it would need to be something you could turn on and off, or maybe it only pops up during combat mode, since no one would want it visible all of the time.
I'd want more talking head conversations, such as for key NPC's, as well as for all recruitable characters. I'd also want the player's character to have a voice as well.
Another thing I'd really like, though it's probably unfeasible, would be occasional vignettes with your party members, during the rest moments. Y'know, conversations around the campfire out in the middle of the desert sort of thing. I'd love to get more of Sulik and Vic arguing, that sort of thing, or Marcus trying to convince the other humans in the party to get dipped, or Miria getting bitchslapped by the player. Coz' god knows she needs it. I figure it'd be kind of like Shadow's dreams in FF6, where if you rested for a long enough period in certain places, you'd get a scene, which would be saved in the PipBoy's Archive section.
I say Remake FF7 and FF8
FF7 Because it is a classic and would be even Cooler in HD
And FF8 Because the Game is awesome and i wanna see it remade again.
