So Jojo (Jojee here) has some interviews in D.C. and will be staying at my apartment for a weekend. She's a ridiculous wimp, but for some reason wants to stay up and watch scary movies. Our current list of possibilities looks like this:

Oh yes, I forgot about the Resident Evil CG movie.
However, Ginger Snaps is actually just terrible/hilarious, and An American Werewolf doesn't look scary enough.
I am never going to let you sleep again after this. Every night I will call you and wake you up at 3am crying about how monsters are going to eat me or something. FYI.

The Haunting in Connecticut was pretty damn scary.
If you want spooky then there's the Exorcism of Emily Rose and Silent Hill.
A scary movie with a good story: 'The Uninvited' comes to mind.
And Rec is smurfing awesome. (the Spanish not the English version)

I've got a lot of time for The Descent and Let the Right One In (the latter isn't particularly scary, though).
Other than that, any George Romero zombie film! Dawn of the Dead is probably my favourite (the remake isn't bad either).
I'm a wuss, I hate scary movies. Though I'm slowly building up tolerance to them. Slowly.

Rec is apparently also off the list because Jojo doesn't want subtitles so she'd have to actually look at the screen. Presumably she will be cowering in terror for half of every movie, so it looks like English-only suggestions will be considered.
Thanks for the other suggestions, and we'll look them up. I'll be sure to post here what we ended up going with and then we can keep track of how many days Jojo goes without sleep.
You do realize we'll get through maybe 1 scary movie and then I will be either too freaked out and/or too drunk to watch/pay attention to the rest? xD
The Others looks good, and The Descent seems pretty scary. Good reviews for both. Let the Right One In isn't in English, but I'll see it sometime on my own time since, yay vampires. The other movies mentioned have pretty mediocre IMDB ratings. xD

Horror movies are the best movies in my opinion. But its not usually because their scary. I'm a big fan of comedy horrors like Dawn of the Dead, Evil Dead 2, Return of the Living Dead and Re-Animator.
The Shining is pretty creepy on a first viewing. Although Jack Nicolsons performance will likely just make you laugh. If you want my advice, watch Eraserhead if you really want something to disturb you.
I like The Shining because it actually has an engaging plot. And Jack Nicholson is great.
I have not seen Eraserhead, but I'll look it up.

Right now, simply based on the recommendations here, I'm leaning towards The Descent for our first movie.

I can't remember the last time I saw a quality horror movie. I'm so disappointed in this genre lately that I don't even want to risk paying some gil for renting them. That's a shame cause I like horrors. What I like even more are atmospheric movies with eerie setting. The Village is the best example.
The Descent seems to have gotten a lot of recommendations here. The film was alright, but nothing special (the ending is was great though). I wonder why, out of all the horror movies out there, that The Descent is the one people seem to be picking. Odd.
The Thing is pretty much the definitive study of paranoia and horror. But then I would recommend it for any movie night, even a girl's rom-com.
The Shining is fairly spectacularly excellent and is a great second choice.
I've never seen The Descent because the trailers never grabbed me. That said it was written and directed by the same chap who made Dog Soldiers (Which is also epic and should go on the list, though it's very comedy-heavy) which is a big point in its favor.

While scaring Rye is not exactly much of an accomplishment, neither is scaring Jojo, so I'll add The Thing to list of considerations.

I've seen the Japanese and American versions of both, and the Japanese versions were anything but creepy or scary. The American versions weren't amazing, but I'd put them both marginally ahead of the Japanese originals in scare factor. I still wouldn't recommend either though.Quote:

Suspiria!!!!
If Disney did a horror movie, it would be Suspiria. The usage of color in that movie is gold.
Audition - Extremely slow in the beginning, but catches up towards the end. I'm not entirely sure if the climax on the film saved it from being completely pointless and not worthwhile, but needless to say, Takeshi Miike does a great job at striking fear in the hearts and minds of viewers.
Psycho (The Original) - Has always been one of my favorite Alfred Hitchcock films; if not my number one fav. Like the aforementioned film, it has a twist which most of you probably know by now. I knew before watching this film as to what that twist was, and it was still great. It has a lot of symbolism too--it's not just a bunch of scripted words being acted out. The performances by Anthony Perkins and Vera Miles are fantastic as well.
The Unknown - Definitely one of Lon Chaney's best performances. Unlike many silent film stars, he doesn't go over the top. Instead his performance as a disgruntled man with no arms is both believable and subtle. Lon Chaney is known for playing characters like Hunchback of Norte Dame (he did his own make-up by the way). Though tbh, he looks just as scary without the make-up. This tale has a lot of twists and turns that can be quite shocking. Although some people can see the whole arm thing as funny, this film is actually pretty dark. However, if you're one of those people who don't like movies without any vocals or color in it, then don't watch.
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari - Pretty disturbing film. The set is amazing. I think this is where Tim Burton got his surrealist set designs from. This film is also silent, but I'm kinda glad. I'd be afraid to know what most of the creepy looking characters sound like in this film.
Army of Darkness - Probably my favorite out of the Evil Dead trilogy. It combines hilarity with horror. Always a bonus. Plus you gotta love the chin. I liked how it appeared to be stop motion they were using for the skeletons. It made them all choppy and weird. The skeletons one-liners were priceless. But don't be fooled by the comedy, it definitely has it's frightening moments.
The original Night of the Living Dead and Nosferatu are also honorable mentions. Classic horror films right there. I didn't mind the remake for Night of the Living Dead though.
These two are freaky in a way that I don't think will ever be able to be recreated on modern celluloid. Count Orlock is the goddamn stuff of nightmares on his own. The light work in the original Night made the zombies more terrifying than any other movie I've seen featuring them - rather than focus on the details, a lot of the time you just see these shambling, white figures off in the distance against a totally black night. It's effective and wonderful.Quote:

The Ring also made me pretty paranoid. I'd check my vcr constantly to see if anything was in there despite it being like 2000 something and VHS being virtually abandoned. Now when I watch that movie I'm like, "Well, this isn't so bad." Those were the last horror films I've seen that were ever able to frighten me. All the rest I see now are not really scary to me.
I saw The Ring in theaters and when I came back to my house, I turned on my TV and got nothing but static. That was about the scariest Ring-related thing to happen to me.
I was under the covers for half of the Ring. Then I wouldn't stay in the same room alone with a TV for like a week. xD
The Descent, The Thing, and The Others are currently my main considerations. I think we have plenty of good choices here.
Three great choices. Should freak you out suitably. BTW, it's not apparent immediately but The Thing and The Descent actually very similar movies. Enjoy.Quote:

The Haunted Latern is a great feudal era ghost story about star crossed lovers and love that survives the grave. It combines aspects of a samurai drama and Hellraiser. Be forwarned that are some bloody scenes. Every time I see that hovering latern during to O-Bon festival it creeps me out.
The Haunting (original version). It's one of the best haunted house movies ever that relies on physchological effect more than special effects. The remake is great looking but empty, although it's instructive to watch them together.
The Legend of Hell House is in some ways similar, a group is assembled into the house, although these are experts trying to prove the existence of life after death. Boy, do they ever prove it.
Uzumaki (no relation to Naruto) is about a town haunted, not by ghosts, but the shape of the spiral. If you watch it, beware of looking around you after and seeing the spiral everywhere.
Event Horizon is basically a haunted house in space. It's well done and looks spectacular, but man does it get gory. And the director even complains on his commentary track about having to tone it down.
The twerp will veto anything too gory. She can't even watch surgical procedures on House without freaking out and looking away.

I'm not a big fan of horror movies... I am a huge fan of good/bad vampire films though, alot of them hold up in the Thriller/Horror genre so...
Check out "Let The Right One In" it's got a vampire and a few scary scenes but mainly it's a drama. Reckon you'll enjoy it.Quote:

30 Days of Night is a pretty beastly vampire flick as well. It didn't scare me, but it was highly entertaining. I was impressed with Josh Harnett's performance. It's probably the only movie I can say I liked him in. Ben Foster is another notable mention.
The Thing isn't really a scary film, but it's one that I really enjoyed watching. It's the paranoia and psychological stuff that goes on that makes it a good film, not it's ability to scare. I liked how the audience is made aware of things that the characters are not and how that plays within the dynamics of the film.
Edit: Also, I don't think it's been suggested yet but 28 Days Later is a quality film.
So how did scary movie night go Raistlin? I hope you did watch The Thing. It is very gory but it's also amazing. The director was at the top of his game and the performances were excellent. Do let us know how it went regardless.

I thought 30 Days of Night was pretty good if you dig vampires and zombie-level gore.
Oh dear. The Mist is a cracker. Nothing mindless about it at all. Sure the mist rolls in, there's all manner of horribleness in it and people get trapped in the store. But the real horror is the "humanity" within the store. Great performances and some really creepy moments. And remember it's a King adaptation and Darabont directed it. I also heard that Silent Hill was a letdown by all the hardcore game lovers, but since neither of us have played much of the games I didn't think the differences would matter much.
I've never been able to be scared by a scary movie.
I always tend to overanalyze anything I watch and immediately find the tiniest flaws or plot holes. That and the fact that I can't really get into a movie's atmosphere, I always have the mindset that I'm just sitting there watching TV like I would with anything else.

A friend of mine recommended Army of Darkness to me, but we determined that it wasn't really scary enough for my purposes. The whole point of Scary Movie Night is simply to scare the hell out of Jojo. I think the two movies I currently have should be pretty good in that sense.

And the Shining is so good. It's freaking creepy.
I really liked Silent Hill, even though it wasn't just like the game.

Only after you have them downloaded do I remember that I've seen Descent before, I think :p If it's what I'm thinking of the trailers for it made it seem really awesome but then later as I watched it I was let down. This movie will do everything you could hope for as far as scaring Jojee though.
So we watched The Descent first. It was ok. It was good for last night's purposes because it sure freaked Jojo out; she sobered up a bit because she was too terrified to move to get her drink for the last hour or so of the movie. Otherwise, it did not seem noteworthy. It was pretty lame plot-wise and the "scary" stuff was just monsters jumping out of shadows. I am far from the bravest person in the world when it comes to horror movies, but I found myself trying to liven up the events with my witty commentary.
Then we watched The Mist, which Jojo saw all of 5 minutes of before falling asleep. Not scary at all. I would more consider this some sort of fantasy/thriller, maybe, but even the thrills were pretty lame. I don't know about the book, but the writing of the movie was pretty terrible and a lot of the plot events seemed very forced and fake. They tell you what the mist is in like one sentence with no build up and then don't mention it again. The ending was fairly interesting and unexpected, but did not come close to saving the movie. I found myself being bored through parts of it.
Well you have my apologies, I thought both movies were excellent and I recommended them many times. What do you look for in a horror? Maybe Friday the 13th is more to your liking? Not an insult as I quite like Jason too but what kind of horrors do you like?Quote:

I don't generally watch horror movies because the lack of an engaging plot bores me. The Mist had potential for that, I just think the movie did a poor job with it (also, why can't any of the massive freakin' monsters break glass? Or crush a car?). The Descent didn't even bother with a plot; the entire story line could be recounted in a paragraph and you wouldn't miss anything. I didn't even know who most of the people were throughout the movie because character development was nonexistent. But that was ok, I wanted that sort of thing for tonight - a scary movie just for the sake of being scary.
The only horror movie I really enjoyed was the original The Shining (someone mentioned The Sixth Sense earlier in this thread which was also excellent, but I don't consider it horror, more like just a somewhat spooky drama).
I also haven't seen an original The Shining yet but I have read the book.
I have not read the book, though I want to at some point. The movie was very well done with Jack Nicholson acting incredibly as usual, an engaging plot that keeps you on your toes, and a jaw-dropping ending. If more horror/thriller films were like it I would watch more of the genre.
Kubrick is the reason the Shining was so good. If more great directors did horror we'd have more great horrors. Instead we get Michael Bay buying the rights to old horrors and letting his friends remake them. God I hate remakes (apart from The Thing :)). The Fog was probably the worst remake ever.
I dont quite understand why people seem to like the Descent so much. It was alright but as scary movies go it was more gory and startling than scary. I thought Saw was quite scary
Shame that Drag me to hell wasn't out before she came round, :P that would have probably scared her big time teehee, I don't get scared easily but when I went to the cinema to see it, I had to curl into my bf the whole time cause I couldn't cope watching the screen!

One thing I love about del Toro is that he's a big believer in practical effects. He only resorts to CGI when it's too complicated or expensive otherwise. Just look at the Underworld series to see what's wrong with over-relying on CGI.
