I'm from the greater LA area--I've seen plenty of homeless doing all kinds of things. In Shibuya I found a cardboard city! It was awesome!
Oo, I found an old PM from Miriel with lots to do.
I am adding to the topic: Where else should BJ and I visit and why would we want to go there? So far we have been to Hawaii, Jamaica, Alaska, Denver, the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, and Japan.
PARIS. Also, the smurfing redwoods, since you'll be up in that area (kindof) anyway.

When are you heading up here? We had a brief period of gorgeous weather, but the rains are starting to come and it's going to get cold and dreary really soon.
Best part of not living in San Fran? Calling it San Fran. I visited San Fran this past summer and San Fran was awesome and I would like living in San Fran had I not already set my heart elsewhere.

I like FRISCO - yeah that's right miriel I went there - it is a lovely city.
Go to that one pier with the sea lions! Pier 39? Maybe? I dunno. There's just an asston of sea lions for no apparent reason and it's great.
Frisco just makes me think of Frisco, TX. San Fran sounds much better.

A friend of mine made a status update on Facebook just yesterday about how weird it is that people outside of San Francisco call it bizarre names like "San Fran" and "Frisco" and there's like 20 comments of people trying to figure out who the smurf started it? It must have been some awful San Francisco hater who decided to spread rumors to tourists that this is what they should call the city and invoking the rage of locals. Is there anything else like it? Los Angeles is just LA, no weirdo nickname like, "Los ANG". And people don't call New York something stupid like, "New Y". Jesus, can you imagine?
Anyway, this to do:
Call in an order (1-3 hours in advance) to Ike's Place and get the ménage ŕ trois sandwich, some chips and a soda, and take it over to Golden Gate Park and have a picnic.
You can spend a whole day at Golden Gate Park and still not see everything that there is to see. The park is gigantic. Aside from the beautiful grounds and hiking areas, there's the botanical gardens, tulip garden, rose garden, Japanese Tea Garden, Academy of Science and the DeYoung museum. There's a beach right across the street from the west end of the Park too.
After a few hours of exploring, you can drive over to Cliff House and look at the view. The beautiful Sutro Bath Houses are right there too and you can get some great photos there. Grab dinner at any one of the absolutely amazing restaurants in SF. For cheap, Naan N' Curry is right by GGP. For more expensive, there's the renowned Zuni Cafe, NOPA or if your down for some meat, the famous House of Prime Ribs. If you finish your ginormous sized portion, they'll give you seconds! But usually most people can't stomach any more meat. There's a place a short walk from GGP called Sun Tung Chinese that has a wicked deep fried chicken wings dish. Keep driving alongside the Pacific Ocean and you'll go through Presidio, the ultra rich neighborhood in SF and they have some beautiful architecture there. The Palace of Fine Arts is really a beautiful thing to see. And inside is the Exploratorium. And the Exploratorium is AWESOME. You can play with bubbles! But watch out for little kids who try and swipe your bubble making device, those little bastards.
The Golden Gate Bridge is definitely something to see, but walking across or biking across is a chore. But if you have the stamina for it, you can rent a bike from Fisherman's wharf, bike all the way to the bridge, across the bridge, and then end up in Sausalito, which is an adorable little touristy town. Think parlor shop ice cream places. From there you take a ferry back to SF and can drop off your bikes. But it's a brutal journey, takes about 2 hours to complete. I'd recommend just driving across the bridge and then heading up to the Marin Headlands to get a stunning view of the bridge and the city. Battery Spencer is a great place to watch the sunset over the bridge. The Fisherman's Wharf is definitely a place to visit, but it is jam packed with tourists. If you're going to eat there, the only restaurant I would recommend is Scoma's. But they do have an In-n-out there if your in a pinch.
Definitely stop by Tartine Bakery for breakfast. You can go shopping at Haight & Ashbury which is a funky little street. It's like, hippie meets commercialism. There's a place on the street called the Sockshop and it's a whole store full of ridiculous socks! Wander around the Mission because it's a really unique neighborhood and grab yourself a Mission burrito. Visit Esperpento, a tapas restaurant and get yourself the lobster paella. It's so freakin' good. And then get drunk off sangria.
If you visit the Embarcadero on Sunday, you can wander around the Ferry Building. There's lots of shops inside and also on Sundays there's a farmer's market. Obviously you won't be buying fresh produce but a bunch of street food vendors come in on Sundays and they have really delicious food. There's also little stalls where people sell little trinkets, artwork, etc.
You can rent a go-cart and tour around the city that way, using their built in GPS talky thingy. Take the go-carts and go to Lombard street and go zig-zagging down SF's curviest street. I've never gone, but I would still recommend a trip to Alcatraz.
And if you still have time, come over to the East Bay and spend some time in Berkeley. The East Bay is home to Bakesale Betty's the the most delicious fried chicken sandwich you can imagine. Everyone should eat one of these in their lifetimes. Also, killer strawberry shortcakes.
Check out Yelp Events, SFGate, And FUNCHEAPSF for ideas of special events and whatnot going on in the city when you're visiting. Festival season is over so there's not a ton happening right now.

Tony and I are going to Napa next week to celebrate our 5 year anniversary. The Napa valley is seriously gorgeous! We're planning on eating at Thomas Keller's Ad Hoc, and the Michelin Starred restaurant, Auberge Du Soleil. Maybe take a hot air balloon ride and hit up some of the spas in the area. Get a mud bath, massage, etc.

Hawaii! I've been twice but Tony hasn't. We can go on a Lost tour!
New Orleans - BEIGNETS!
Florida - Wizarding World of Harry Potter! I heard that Disneyworld isn't as good as Disneyland though.

We toyed around with going to DC for the Keep Fear Alive/Restore Sanity rally but since it's going to be televised, might as well save the trip.

I lived in California the majority of my life and have still never been to San Francisco. I've never been rich enough to pay the Golden Gate Bridge toll to get in.

The Ripley's Believe it or Not! Museum is on Fisherman's Wharf, I believe. I spent a day there, I don't really have much to go on.

San Francisco is a really cool city. I definitely like it there. I wish I were the one going - I'd love to go back.
But anyway, Haight Ashbury, Castro and The Mission are all very much worth checking out. As for things like the Fisherman's Wharf... meh. Not really that interesting. At all.
San Francisco is great for just randomly walking around and exploring. The Mission and around e.g. has a hell of a lot of cool and pretty murials.
As for accommodation the only place I know is a hostel in The Mission because that's where I stayed. I don't even remember the name, but it was cheap.
Oh, and be sure to go to Zeitgeist. It's a really great bar not far from The Mission.
