FINAL

(SPOILER)ULTIMA SHADOW, aka the Swedish Dreamboat vs JIRO, aka the Australian Disco Diva!

Both these two fine stallions have had a difficult road to the finals, both losing matches to fellow countrymen in the group stage. Ultima Shadow started off with a shock loss to Rantz which saw him bottom of the Moogle group, but turned on the style with a fine victory over Mirage and then putting Quin to the sword. He was then on tenterhooks for the outcome between Rantz and Quin until it was declared a tie. He then successfully staved off WildRaubtier and broke his 100% win record to march into the final.

Jiro, meanwhile, steamed ahead in Tonberry, putting Loony BoB down right away. He then suffered a blow at the hands of Wild Raubtier, but managed to utterly destroy Jowy 8-2 to qualify as best runner up. Like Shadow, he too faced an opponent who had not yet lost, Citizen Bleys, in the semi-finals. And like Shadow, he managed to emerge victorious.

So, what are they fighting for? I'll tell you what. EoFF's first ever Level 10 Triple Triad card. Oh yes. 2,025 gil will also be awarded to the man who comes out on top. There will be a reward for the runner up too, as he will receive a Level 9 card and 1,025 gil!

Meanwhile, in our third place playoff, CITIZEN BLEYS will take on WILDRAUBTIER.

WildRaubtier has expressed a desire to have nothing more to do with this thread. Will the third place prize, a Level 8 Card and 525 gil, be enough to tempt him into battle against the wily Canadian?

For people fearful about entering Firaga: If you only have L1 and L2 cards, that's good enough. Think about it - by participating, you get a L6 card. So you've already gained. And if you only use L1 and L2 cards, really, you have nothing of note to lose... :D

...and if you REALLY want the high-level cards before you participate, I'm currently selling a full set of every Level 7 card for 100 gil at the trade center. So go ahead and buy those, whoever happens to lack the cards. :greenie:

Okay, with the goal being 24 and 12 players, I think the formats will be this:

Fire will have 16 competing in an initial preliminary round, with 8 players receiving Byes to the next round. I'm still debating over whether to assign byes randomly or intentionally, with players in the Firaga tournament receiving the Byes so that the newer players have more of a chance of winning a game. It'll be a straight knock out tournament.

Firaga is going to be like a football/soccer tournament! That's right, there will be a Chocobo Group, Moogle Group and a Tonberry Group. Each group will be like a league and will have four players in it. All four players will play against each other (So each player has three matches to play) with a point being earned for a win. The three winners of the groups will all make it to the semi-finals.

In the event of a tie, the group winner will be based on the head-to-head record between that player and the other one. So if BoB and I both win two games, but in our game I have beaten BoB, I will go through. The fourth semi-final spot will be occupied by the best runner up depending on points tally, cards for and against, and then maybe even a playoff if there are two even players.

I appreciate it sounds slightly complex but it's not! I'm really just trying to cover every little loophole right now. It'll make more sense when you see it, and I'll keep track of this anyway so you don't have to worry about it. The idea of making everyone play 3 games is so that the truly talented players will go through... plus you're all fanatics so you're meant to enjoy playing more games!

Predict the 3 winners of the groups in Firaga! If you predict all three correctly you can win 1,000 gil.

How many players progress through the Group Stage? My chances of progressing are relying heavily on WildRaubtier being demolished by Jowy and Loony BoB. I know BoB is a tough competitor, and Jowy is an unknown quantity at this point, but WildRaubtier has some tricks up his sleeve.

Not getting my Leviathan though :colbert: If you want to play for keeps, we have to redo the tournament match! :radred:

I'd rather settle with a best-of-five connect 4.

What rules are there for the lvl 2. tournament?

One person in each group is guaranteed to make it out of the group stage. The best placed runner up out of all four will also make it through. So Jiro if you absolutely smash Jowy you'll probably be fine.

If BoB beats WR 6-4... then it is going to get very complicated. Don't do that, BoB.

Also, the "Same Wall" rule is pretty much useless unless you play with A-cards actually. All it does is making the walls into "A-power", meaning you can "Same" with A-cards by having the A facing the wall. But it only works for Same, not plus. So it's a kinda silly rule, really. :p

I appreciate people don't like every single rule choice I made and the feedback has been noted. It is just for the opening round and the idea is to have a couple of rules here and there to start off with, and then put more in as we go on.

I can't please everyone with every rule but hey, a true champion is happy to step outside their comfort zone every once in a while and play with something they're not used to. ;)

Both players don't need to be online at the same time. You can leave the match, and then go back to it at any time later if the opponent isn't online at that time etc. :greenie:

Just remember, click into the Active Battles on the left of the navbar (just beneath the Articles tab) when you're in Triple Triad and you'll see a list of games that you can pick back up on at any time. I actually thought there was a trade rule in effect. Additionally, I was running between the game and doctor who, so I wasn't really paying attention. That first card you flipped could have been avoided if I had paid attention :p.

I used 5x L1 cards on a fair number of games to beat Queen of Cards, but not Dr. Kadowaki. But it is still possible to beat Dr. Kadowaki using L1 cards. I used L3-5 cards to beat Dr. Kadowaki, though, and have beaten her a few times using 5x L3 cards.

EDIT: Formalhaut, just lose, but don't worry about it. If you forfeit, you lose anyway and the cards still get taken from you if there are cards up for grabs... so for the sake of participation (completing a game earns you a card, it should be noted), you should definitely complete the game.

I think I've got the brackets up to date now.

WildRaubtier is the winner of Tonberry and will make it to the semi-finals. Jiro is confirmed to have second place nailed down, and now BoB and Jowy will compete for the wooden spoon.

Moogle is hotting up nicely, it will be intriguing to see how Quin performs. If he beats Rantz and loses to Ultima Shadow then the group will look very interesting indeed.

As for Chocobo, I'll be very interested to see who can finally come out on top of the war of attrition between Goldenboko and Vivi. Whoever does will be in a very strong position in the group.

Yeah, so my modus operandi for the tournament is trade rule: none for Fire, trade rule: one for Firaga and don't play any cards I don't mind losing; if anyone going forward doesn't like that, I'm not too attached, just decline the challenge and rechallenge me with the trade rule you want.

Fair warning though, if you want to do trade rule: none in Firaga, I'm pulling out the big guns :)
