Yakuza and Saints Row are good yeah, but honestly no sandbox game does anything interesting with the sandbox with the exception of Just Cause. In every other game they're just a backdrop you exist in that serves no purpose beyond pretending to be a real city. Sure the quests/characters within can be interesting, but Just Cause 2 is a fun game to just smurf around in to a degree none of the others can even pretend to be except maybe Saints Row 4. Everything else? Meh. Sorry, but just running/driving around from one quest objective to the next isn't actually enjoyable and the lack of any attempt to actually structure the experience only drives that home even more so.Originally Posted by Spuuky
Like here's the thing: I had more fun smurfing around in Just Cause 2 than any other sandbox game. And the story and missions in Just Cause 2 literally suck. I don't even remember them. They just got in the way of smurfing around. Sure the story and characters and stuff in Yakuza are great, but did I actually enjoy the gameplay as much? Nope. Wasn't even close.
Honestly i don't consider any of those sandboxes, which is why they didn't even cross my mind. Open world doesn't mean sandbox in my mind

Platformer - Braid (not counting games where platforming is not the main focus, i.e. Metroidvanias, Tomb Raider series, etc)
Puzzle - Braid (uhh...not joking, it has to be counted here, too, right? If no repeats are allowed, and for something more "pure" puzzle-y, then any Puzzle Quest)
RPG - Brai-- jk jk. I have to go w/ Deus Ex I guess. It's "Immersive Sim" first, but at the time it came out, was categorized - and rightfully so - as an RPG. Or else, it'd be Fallout: New Vegas or Final Fantasy VIII.
Action - Nier: Automata or Hyper Light Drifter (sorry, I know, a tie is cheating)
Fighting - Guilty Gear Xrd REV2 or Mortal Kombat 9 (sorry, I know, a tie is cheating)

Fighting - Super Smash Bros. Melee (don't like the genre much, but I had some good times playing this with my friends back in the day)

Rhythm - Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory
Adventure - Gone Home
Racing - Jak X: Combat Racing (not a huge fan of racing games, either, but at least Jak X has some great character-driven storytelling)
Sports - Backyard Sports: Baseball 2007 (literally the only sports game I have ever owned)
Mobile - Nier Reincarnation (only just started, but it's already the most impressive game I've played on mobile, by far)
