Thread: Which translation?

  1. #1

    Default Which translation?

Most, or rather, all, of you seem to enjoy the newer translation of FFV more than the FFA version. I agree, it's good, but there are some changes I didn't like when it comes to the names.

    Rikks> Lix
    Zeza> Zezat
    Kelga> Kelger
Easterly> Istory, even if it isn't in the east.

And I'm sure you're all with me on this, but Cid is a much better translation than "Cid." Bah! What were they thinking?

And I think Faris doesn't talk piratey enough.

    On the plus side:
Sarisa is probably better than Salsa, but I'm not so adamant about that.
Same goes for Reina v. Lenna. I like Reina better, but Lenna's not bad.
Krile... thank whatever gods there are that they didn't use the Japanese name, Karuru.

And why don't people like the translation of Hiryuu to "dragon?" And why is Lenna's dragon "Hiryuu" while Krile's is called a wind drake? what's the difference between "drake" "dragon" and "hiryuu?"

well you have to remember that the japanese don't really have an L sound, so a lot of the things you prefer, such as Reina, and Rikks, are probably just the Japanese struggling to say the letter L. if you asked a jap guy to say Lenna, he'd probably say Reina, and the same goes for Lix /Rikks. that's cool, there's nothing wrong with it, but why would we want our translation to include a foreign accent trying to speak english?

as for hiryuu, i like that, it's a bit more interesting than "dragon", although it's not a big deal.

also thank god faris doesn't talk piratey much. i couldn't take her seriously if she did.

I'll prolly always call Lenna Reina only 'cause I like it better and what I see first is normally what sticks with me. I do like the fact that Salsa is Sarisa 'cause Salsa makes me think of food and then I get hungry for chips and salsa and then I'm not playing FFV anymore. u u

But yeah.. GBAFFV > PS1FFV anyday.

Well, actually, in Japanese, the L and R sounds are kinda the same.

But anyway, the GBA version's translation is the best so far. My only irk is that they didn't use Klulu or some sort of variant of that other than Krile. I guess they want to be consistent, or something.

    And I liked Salsa.

I know abuot all that translatey stuff, and I understand the reasons for the differences, I'm just saying that I prefferred Rikks over Lix and such.

do you prefer flied over fried? and ronery over lonely?

i dunno, if you consider that these new translations are supposedly most accurate (which they have been in every other sense), it's hard to picture anything but some japanese guy struggling to say Lix and it coming out Rikks...

    Hm... nah, Krile>Cara
and Bartz> Butts. Someone had to say it.

I'm not saying which one was a better or more accurate translation, I'm just saying which one I think sounds better in English, where we hear a difference between R and L.
