My calling now is not too far from what it was before
though I don't play with you much, friends and peers, not anymore - Old FF reference. The answer is like something in an older FF, but different.

So far, so good. The answer is like someone from an older FF, but with a different profession; although the professions are connected in a maybe not so obvious way. Likely to be one of the many backwards nods from SE.

I am tired, weary; Do I even still exist?
I can't feel my limbs, but through my work I will persist! - It might not even exist, full stop. Which means it could be dead, but with it's "work" (ideas? Writings? Research on something?) it is still known in the game.

Now we're getting somewhere! The job is not any of those you mention, but another type of job that can make you "immortal", in the abstract sense of the word. And yes, the answer might be dead, although we don't know for sure (and no, this does not mean it's him).

Though short, unknown and ugly may all well be in command - Brahne, Burmecia, and Cid all use something related to the answer to do stuff.

Is it one of the Cids? Cid I, I think. No....Cid VII. Cid VII invented airships, which are used by *reasoning fails due to the King of Burmecia*.

It's not any of the Cids. I was going to make a riddle about one of them at first though, so bonus points for solving the riddle I never even made! Then I thought of this one which is far more genial.
