The only reason to take the stairs is to see Tifa call Barret a retard. And I guess Red's Behemoth Horn weapon won't show up later in the game if you don't snag an Elixir in there during your first trip...but really, it's all about the "retard" snap.

Yeah I always take the stairs to get the elixir and then go back down and walk right in to get the Exp. On my last play through I was on a Low Level game so I walked up the stairs and then got a lift down to the bottom to see the Turtles' Paradise flyer.

edit: Oh yeah and that retard comment surprises me every time! Can't believe they left that in the game.

I was like, "hmm...how come I never use the stairs?" Then I did take the stairs, and remembered I did it my first playthrough a long long time ago. Now I know why I never take the stairs x.x
