I've listened to once her before, and her voice rubbed my ears the wrong way and it was unlistenable for me, but then I listened to two tracks ('81 and Easy) of her new album, and I liked it a lot more. I dunno if it was just that song or an old singing style that she's modified, or what, but I'm going to get around to getting this album now because I love how operatic her voice is, with a twinge of something different.

Her voice has changed somewhat since her debut (it's noticeable on her second album too). This was apparently partially due to her having surgery on her vocal chords or something, which changed her singing voice permanently. But I imagine some of it is just a singer naturally changing the way they sing over time.

I can't listen to her. The voice just irks me, though I've heard some songs that are better than others. Overall it just grinds my gears though.

From a musical standpoint though, seeing what she plays and sings over at the same time is impressive.

Her vocals have definitely become more "accessible" over time, without losing its personality.

Ah, I love the album! After listening to a few of her things, my favorite is Peach, Plum, Pear. I've gotten more used to her voice after getting a bit acclimated through the more accessible vocals.

Peach, Plum, Pear is from her first album! xD

Edit: Oh, wait, I misread your post. All's well!

I could never really get into her because all I could picture was Lisa Simpson playing a harp and singing. Not my thing. If this album has a different jive to it I might give it a listen, though.

She doesn't sound anything like Lisa Simpson. Well, aside from on Inflammatory Writ on Milk-Eyed Mender. On Ys and Have One on Me her vocals are very different to how they were on her debut.

Yeah, I would try it beyond Inflammatory Writ, if that was your first listen. That was the song that completely put me off her when I first listened.

I love that song! It's easy to see how it'd be off-putting to many though.

    I don't see what's wrong with Inflammatory Writ? It's a good song.

For me, it's because her voice is so strong in those very few seconds of it, that I had to instantly turn it off without giving it a proper chance. Listening to it now, I can see it's much better than I gave credit, but it's not my first choice to play, by any means.

It probably isn't what I'd recommend to new listeners as the first song either ("Sprout and the Bean" or something similar is perhaps more accessible).

Anyway, glad you discovered and now enjoy Joanna Newsom, Rye!
