As I said, outside of America, "the war" refers to World War II. I was not aware that in America, or possibly Britain (although I doubt it), "the war" would refer to anything different, regardless of context.
EDIT: Unless it was a Vietnam war vet talking in a stereotypical way about "the war". Although they'd probably refer to it as "'nam" rather than "the war".
