Everyone focuses on the character graphics. Well, the backgrounds are still gorgeous so gtfo.

This. The backgrounds still all hold up. If you watch a playthrough of the PC version with higher quality characters models it still looks great.
That was a problem with all ps1 games really. Resident Evil being another big one.
Very true. Although RE's main problem is its slow as heck tank controls. But much like the graphics, get used to them and they're perfectly playable.
But yes the backgrounds are beautiful, and the in battle graphics are a step up.

if this doesn't make you want to play the game then you are a terrible human being with terrible taste and you don't deserve the experience anyway
Easily one of the best video game stories. And it's so much better without voice acting!
It's just fun and the weird graphics aren't that bad.
