Cid and Brahne are indeed the ones the riddle calls "short" and "ugly". Garland, however, has no connection to the riddle or the answer. Who else could be the "unknown"?
is kuja unknown?
Ozma? He/she/its unknown
Nope. Remember that these three have a special connection.
I'm going to take a stab and say "The King of Burmecia".
Yup! Unknown because you never hear his name, in contrary to the other two.
So "short, unknown and ugly" refers to Regent Cid, the King of Burmecia and Queen Brahne. Now to carry on with the rest of the riddle!

Kuja.
He was controlling their actions after all.
No, sorry!
The reference to a previous Final Fantasy lies in the first two lines.
Do the first two lines refer to moogles? :o
Nope, but you're thinking along the right lines from what I can tell. Moogles also have a similar relation between IX/the game being referenced to the the answer's. If that makes any sense. :)
I was gonna say the Crystal, but then realised my reasonings didn't fit. I'll say it anyway so it gets checked off the list. :(
It's not the crystal. :D
Is it the main character in the first two lines? :(
I'm going to say Gilgamesh.
No to you both.
The answer is a person.
Is it someone that the characters can meet, or do they simply hear of him/her?
In a way, you can meet this person, but not the characters.
Hmmm.....so it's a character from a cutscene or one of their nifty little ATE thingies?
Nope, not really. ;) I'm not gonna clue you more on that particular subject right now, it would make it too easy. Feel free to ask about other stuff though!
Hmm....I have an idea. But I need to check my game before I do anything, because I can't remember what my answer will be.
A black mage?
Nope, sorry.

The first two lines contains references to a previous Final Fantasy.
Is the reason the character can't play with his friends and peers because of an illness or a "calling" ?
I suppose you could say it's because of the person's current calling.
Does it have to do with a job class?
In the other final fantsy that is referenced to this person plays with us right. And now they don't do that but their purpose is the same.
The only people I can think of are gilgamesh and Carbunkle and I'm preety sure neither are correct.
I need to play more final fantasy.
It does have to do with a job class! At least in a way, but it's not why the answer can't play with you.
eiko guy: Well put, only the purpose is not the same, but it's "not too far" from what it was.
It's not Gilgamesh or Carbunkle.
It's not :(
The "calling" now and then are connected by theme only, and may not seem very alike in actuality.
your riddles kill forums :p
I prefer the term slowly suffocates.
The Ilfa tree?
Ramuh?
The calling might have to do with people :)
No right answers.
Aieee Rantz. What about a kingdom? :jess:
Still pretty far off. :) Try and categorize the person from the info you have!
Is it Puck? :o
Nope!
is it Blank?
No. The third line should be pretty descriptive, what does it tell you in plain language?
It tells me the person is tired, maybe physically or mentally, and questions their own existence.
Beatrix does that at some point, but I can't find a way to relate her to the other lines. :(
It's not so much that the person questions their own existence, but that their existence could be questioned.
Beatrix does unfortunately not win you the pot either way.
Damn. I need a nice bit o' Mary. :(
Ah right, I gotcha doll.
RUBY. :jess:
NOT
"but through my work I will persist"
What does this make you think of? Can we assume it's a certain type of work? Also try and relate this to "Do I even still exist?".
Mikoto?
No, sorry.
I haven't played in a while so I don't know if they're even in it
Magus Sisters?
Or summoners?
Nope.
Well it's not a philosophical line really, like in "do I exist if I'm a genome?". It's more brutal than that, so to say. The word "still" tells you what about the answer? :)

Is it a big or little character, in terms of importance to the game? ;_;
Very little. :jess:
I need Harle here to help me with my reasoning. ;_;
Ummm. I can't think of anyone who has a little role in the game. I say we ... give Rantzien bubbles. :jess:
To distract me and trick me into revealing the answer, I'd bet. :)
Did someone call for aid? :cape:
So lemme get this straight in my head:
My calling now is not too far from what it was before
though I don't play with you much, friends and peers, not anymore - Old FF reference. The answer is like something in an older FF, but different.
I am tired, weary; Do I even still exist?
I can't feel my limbs, but through my work I will persist! - It might not even exist, full stop. Which means it could be dead, but with it's "work" (ideas? Writings? Research on something?) it is still known in the game.
Though short, unknown and ugly may all well be in command - Brahne, Burmecia, and Cid all use something related to the answer to do stuff.
they do not see how they are mere puppets under my hand - They would be powerless without it? Or, at least, they wouldn't be able to do something if the thing relating to this person wasn't around?
All that, and the fact that the answer is a person.
Is it one of the Cids? Cid I, I think. No....Cid VII. Cid VII invented airships, which are used by *reasoning fails due to the King of Burmecia*.
That rat bastard. :mad2:
So far, so good. The answer is like someone from an older FF, but with a different profession; although the professions are connected in a maybe not so obvious way. Likely to be one of the many backwards nods from SE.
Now we're getting somewhere! The job is not any of those you mention, but another type of job that can make you "immortal", in the abstract sense of the word. And yes, the answer might be dead, although we don't know for sure (and no, this does not mean it's him).
Nope, this particular line does not really relate to the answer, but only to B&B&C.
No. This line may be more relevant than you think at first. It's stuffed with information!
It's not any of the Cids. I was going to make a riddle about one of them at first though, so bonus points for solving the riddle I never even made! Then I thought of this one which is far more genial.
A target? I don't think so, but I'm not quite sure what you mean.
Argh, I can't explain. just ignore that ;p
And this person is easy to miss throughout the game, did you say?
Also, would I be on the right lines if I took "I can't feel my limbs" quite literally, and assumed this person no longer has limbs?
Yup.
Hey~ Is it Blank in the petrified forest? :o
Who in this games has no Limbs?
Sorry about this, it was a misunderstanding. My answer was to Quin's first question, then he slyly edited in the second question.
The person does presumably have most of their limbs intact; the phrase should however not be ignored, and Quinny is not on the wrong track!
Nope :(
I hate you, Rantz.
It reminds me of a really little person. Like the little engine that could. :(
Again you're not making any sense Lazz :jess:
Is it that quiz monster? I can't remember the name. xD
It's not the Ragtimer Mouse. :)
Could it be someone who invented something? Or is a something named after the answer?
Invented is closer, but not spot on.
See! It has to be the black mages. xD
Maybe in the end I'll give in and admit that it actually is. :shifty:
Now, a shomewhat random guess... Hades?
"Through my works I will persist" - he is the Great Synthesist, after all... "Can't feel my limbs" - well, he is sitting on the throne during the battle. And as far as I know, there was something like that in one of the previous FFs, no?
Just a guess.
:save: Selena
It's not Hades. Synthesizing is even closer to the right type of work, however, although it's not a shop-type work.
The only other synthesis I can think of is that big ass statue in Daguerro that turns your scabby old ores into nice, prettier rocks. I don't think there's a name on it though, and I can't think of a way that it'd fit with the rest.
Unless, of course, it was the fact that BB+C all had a nice pretty rock at some point.
Nah, not that. The work is not anything that has to do with synthesis, that's just closer than invention.
So this person didn't make something....more edited something that already existed? Did s/he make it his/her own? Meaning, did the older thing become obsolete and only the answer's remained popular? That is, assuming my first sentence is correct.
I didn't say the answer never made anything... And that's as far as I'll guide you on that particular subject.

Well, how would you feel if you starved for so long, yet were too stubborn to give up?

Not sure about that, either.
My guess match the following hints:
The answer is a person.

Just another random guess.

A frog?
is it Gogo, the guy the Old man in Danguerro tells you about that used to make dolls of people?
Reasoning
My calling now is not too far from what it was before
though I don't play with you much, friends and peers, not anymore
(was playable in FFVI)
I am tired, weary; Do I even still exist?
I can't feel my limbs, but through my work I will persist!
Though short, unknown and ugly may all well be in command ( Cid,Brahe,King of Burmecia)
they do not see how they are mere puppets under my hand ( He made dolls representing them)
Correct! :jess: Do you want show your reasoning for it? Otherwise I'll submit my reasoning for it.
Show the reasoning Rantz! I had no chance of getting this one.
Well done, Caveroamer, you hunk.
My calling now is not too far from what it was before
In Final Fantasy VI, Gogo was a member of the party who was a Mimic. Back then, he imitated. Now he makes "dolls that look like real people", another form of imitation.
though I don't play with you much, friends and peers, not anymore
He's not in the playing party in this game.
I am tired, weary
When you exchange the Magical Fingertip (supposedly Gogo's) for the Excalibur, he says about the item: "Look at these fingers. They look worn-down, as if they never got a break."
Do I even still exist?
We do not know whether Gogo Godfingers still lives or not.
I can't feel my limbs
Considering his fingers or hand, or whatever the Magical Fingertip is, is an item you can achieve, he is likely not to be able to feel them anymore.
but through my work I will persist!
His dolls are handicraft that will continue to remind of him.
Though short, unknown and ugly may all well be in command
they do not see how they are mere puppets under my hand
Cid, The King of Burmecia and Brahne are (were) the leaders of their countries, but they are all made to dolls "under his hand".
Your go, Caveroamer, and good job!
Edit: It went on for 5 pages. I think that's a personal record.
Here it goes
Power to rule them all
Destroying things with a single blow
Do not underestimate me
For I am the bringer of Death
I'm taking a stab and saying "The Invincible"
I'd guess at Lvl. 5 Death. Or a character that can cast it, like Quina.
Kuja?
yeah the invincible
Hellz yeah.
Whoever posts next can have the riddle, I can't make Riddles worth crap. :P
as long as it isnt rantzien :p
I'd like to have a go if you guys don't mind waiting until this evening.
I'm happy with BG-57 going next, and don't mind waiting a little while.
OK, here we go:
Is this code just?
I follow it anyway
Vicious as it is
It will serve me well
being garlands knight?
Nope.
Steiner?
If not Steiner, probably Beatrix.
Neither Steiner nor Beatrix.
Right, those two wouldn't make sense with that second part.
I'm going to take another guess with Amarant.
Is this code just?
I follow it anyway
- The way Amarant lives his life is hardly a just way, he's a mercanary who lives for the fight. However
Vicious as it is
It will serve me well
The life he leads is definitely of a more vicious nature, hunting down men and all. However he manages to make it through just fine.
Good guess but it's not Amarant either.
Beatrix?
Already been guessed.
I'm thinking that "me" in the riddle could refer to the player, having to make a moral choice, where you'd actually gain [more] from choosing the immoral "code". I haven't found an example of that yet, though.
You're on the right track, Rantzien.
Repost:
Is this code just?

Vicious as it is

Ugh. The kind of thing Rantzien is talking about is right on the tip of my tongue, but I can't remember an example in FFIX. Like in Morrowind where you can either choose to help people with their troubles or kill them and take their stuff.
HintThis riddle is similar to the clock puzzle in FFVIII.
So, if its like the clock puzzle in ff8, it must be something to do with the orders of the stories about the invincible prototypes in Oelivert, and the means to retrieve the Gulug stone to save the rest of the group yes?
No, think more in terms of how it is solved.
The "Hero" story you puzzle together for Ramuh?
Nope.
The method of solving applies to the riddle itself, not the answer.
Does it have anything to do with the first letters of each line being roman numerals? :)
Yes.
Ack! I know it, but just don't quite know it! This is great haha.
Would you like a hint?
Yes, please. I've been kinda out of my logical reasoning groove for a while, and a hint would help.
HintAs Rantzien discovered, the first letter in each line represents a Roman numeral. These numbers can be combined, but they're in the correct order already. That limits the combination of possible numbers.
Why am I so heavily reminded of the Knights of Pluto?
Yes, I know that the chances of this answer being right over a hunch are rather low, but I'm just saying. ^^;;
It's not the Knights of Pluto, but I'm glad somebody's still guessing.
Repost:

I got stuck on this a while ago, but I might as well post my notes on the possible number combinations:
1 1 5 1
1 1 6
1 4 1
2 5 1
2 6
Of course these in themselves could be interpreted in a number of ways. I've checked for stats that match the numbers in some way, looked for clocks in the game that might show one of these as a time, and such. Maybe I'm reading too much into it. :)
It's one of those number sequences. At this point you could solve it by elimination.
Repost:

Vicious as it is

It's not the Ragtimer, is it?
No, it's not a person.
1511? xD
Nope.
1 1 5 1
1 1 6
1 4 1
2 5 1
2 6
I remember that you had to put in a code at some point.. but for the life of me i cant remember where
The numerical code does not literally appear in the game, but solving it will help you find the behavioral code that does.
The frog catching game?
2 6 ?
251?
I know that number had some meaning in the game.
Do the words in your riddle actually have any meaning, or were they merely chosen so the Roman numerals would fit?
I'm just wondering if this code is "vicious". Gnarly riddle, by the way. I like. :D
1 1 5 1
1 1 6
1 4 1
2 5 1
2 6
It's not 2 5 1.
A little of both, actually. The lines are relevant to the riddle, but I made sure to start with specific letters. For example As vicious as it is would read better than Vicious as it is, but I need a V there.
And yes I think most people would regard this code as vicious.
Glad you like it. :)
Does it have to do with the candle code or the elevator code?
No to both. It's not a literal code you have to type in at any point in the game, it's more of a moral code that you can choose to follow.
1 1 5 1
1 1 6
1 4 1
2 5 1
2 6
Repost:
Is this code just?

Vicious as it is
It will serve me well
ooh i get it
1 4 1
one for one..
That's the correct numerical sequence, yes. :)
You've correctly read the IV as representing the word For, but you need to pronounce the Is differently.
The move "Eye For Eye"? Which increases the chance of you smacking the crap out of someone who attacks you, which is kinda mean and vicious ;), but it can serve you well. :D
thats just stealing the answer HARLE
Nice riddle. :)
thats true i suppose.. it was a pretty tough one.
I suppose I'll have to confirm, it is Eye 4 Eye.
Incidently it's taken from the Code of Hammurabi, which is the first written codified set of laws. It's pretty harsh by modern standards, but it was an improvement over simple revenge killings.
Your go, Harle-Quin. :)
Wow. Interesting. Good riddle.
I haven't played recently, so can't think of one. Aerith's Knight or Rantzien can have my go, as they contributed the most.
I'll try and think one up if AK doesn't want it.
I never tried a FFIX one.. can i do it? T__T
Go ahead Mr. 47. Riddle away. before I think one up.
Make it a goodun.

no, youre thinking along the wrong lines.
The chest in Dali that requires the Mayors Key to obtain?
One bump, one moment,
and i am gone. - it's only there for a short time. Not sure what the bump might be, though. Still...worth a guess.
but with the right combination,
the right location,
you'll get something powerful. - Combination doesn't fit. Location does. There's something good in the box.
This is almost definitely wrong; I just wanna get the ball rolling.
nope, so ill give a hint.
hint1: "Something powerful" is an accesory.
The Moonstone you get from perfecting the Zidane/Blank fighting scene in the beginning? The reasoning should be self-evident.
nope, nice try though
A stab in the Dark, but Dark Matter? which you can only get through auctions.
chocograph??
nope to both.
big hint: think Treno
Stellazio coins?
Treno fountain?
Something that can be synthesized only in Treno, is it the Kachusha?
I think it's the Power Belt you can get in Treno on Disc 2.
One bump, one moment,
and i am gone.
Gilgamesh "accidentally" bumping into Garnet, and then fleeing after stealing some of her Gil.
but with the right combination,
Choosing the ATE's 'Treno Tradition' and 'Pursuit'.
the right location,
The Synthesis Shop where Gilgamesh escaped to.
you'll get something powerful.
You will receive a Power Belt if you approach Gilgamesh with Steiner.
I made it a little too easy with that hint. xD
Nog has it! Go! go! go!

Good guess, but it's not correct.
Awwww....
Ok...
Eiko's mog?
Zidane's friend(with benefits) back in that other world?
It's not Mog or Mikoto.
The "Garnet" add-on?
It's not the "Garnet" add-on.
Its gotta be Sir Fratley... ?
It's not Sir Fratley.
...... :( I'm determined to get this right...
Freya?
I'll repost the riddle and give a hint, as no-one has replied for a few days.

Dagger's ability to summon Eidolons? It makes sense, since Zorn and Thorn ripped it from her heart, but it takes alot of spirit(MP) to summon Eidolons.
It's not Eidolons.
Concentrate on the words "comforting presence". What comforts someone (in the game) when their feeling sad or alone.
Madeen?
Is it friends when they're seperated but they're connected in their hearts because they love one another?
is it the song Melodies Of Life?
It's not Madeen or Friends, but Melodies of Life is very close.
I can't help but think it's Garnets hummy tune, but that would be Melodies of Life...hmm. Need to re-read riddle and replay game, haha.
It is Garnets hummy tune. :p
The track is called Song of Memory on the OST. Melodies of Life is the song that plays at the end credits IIRC.
Bah. Same tune. :D
Thanks, of course, go to everyone else who did all the hard work, enabling me to swoop in and steal the glory.
First and foremost,

Magus murder next,

Obsolete from the start,
but you may want it once more.
When your world becomes confused,
it's the thing you'll wish for.
Who am I?
What is my name?
One must become a stranger,
for the rest of this game.
Taken at once,
but evolving throughout.
I spend most of my time,
just brooding about.
Person or thing?
Friend or foe?
That, my dear friends,
is what I want to know.
Hell yes. I like rhyming so much that I'll do it, cheesiness and lame-ness be damned!
Yay, Quin riddle! :jess:
Just as it should be. :)
My guess is Dagger.
First and foremost,
It's Zidane's initially equipped weapon.
short and swift.
Well it is.
Magus murder next,
though it can be missed.
Mage Masher is the next weapon for Zidane, although you don't have to get it.
Obsolete from the start,
You can steal a better weapon in your first fight...
but you may want it once more.
When your world becomes confused,
it's the thing you'll wish for.
... but when you get to Ipsen's castle, the Dagger is the shizzle.
Who am I?
What is my name?
I think this verse and the following refer to Dagger, the person, rather than the weapon.
One must become a stranger,
for the rest of this game.
Garnet hides her identity behind the alias Dagger.
Taken at once,
"Kidnapped" at first,
but evolving throughout.
but gains much power throughout the game.
I spend most of my time,
just brooding about.
Not sure what this is supposed to mean. I guess she is a thoughtful lass. :)
Person or thing?
Princess or weapon?
Friend or foe?
This doesn't make sense. You probably just used this to be able to rhyme :D
That, my dear friends,
is what I want to know.
Okay.
I'm, like, the opposite of Thingfish. :(
In my defence, I haven't played for a while, so couldn't think of anything good. :(
For face-saving purposes, Rantzien was wrong about the "evolving throughout" line. That actually just refers to her speech, and the whole Princess-cum-commoner thing. Hah!
Rantzien's up.
EDIT: Also, the "friend or foe" line does make sense, bitch. Dagger girl = friend. Dagger weapon = foe, if I didn't like weapons. :mad2: Cheeky bugger.
Oh what the hell? I don't even get the Fastest Solved Riddle award?
xD You're such a tetchy little Englishman.

Come to us, in times of leisure
