Depends on how they are related to me. A friend's or family member's kid? I'd lie or tell them to ask mommy. A stranger's? I'd tell the truth. My own, or one I had jurisdiction over? I'd tell the truth.
Lie to them and tell them some sort of fairy tale or anything else non-sensical.
Tell it to them straight, and shatter the tiny, protected world they've been living in.
Run away screaming.
