I was taught that as well, but I find it can make you seem incredibly rude if you aren't careful.

Yep :3 I try to do that. Sometimes it's pretty awkward though >.< Don't like looking at a lot of people when I talk to them.

I just can't look people in the eye. It's especially bad when they have really bright eyes, like blue or green or something -- I get all shifty and start looking around. I have a huge problem with eye contact :O But I'm going to work on it.
