How to Kill Meph

By making him an idiot

Likely, some of you know this trick already. However, for those that don't, I thought to pass such knowledge on.

What it is:
Undoubtedly, you are familiar with most (if not all) locations of the Diablo world. And so, as you likely recall, Mephisto lies at the bottom his Durance of hate, which happens to have a lovely pool and moat of blood. There is a bridge of corpses and bones that rises from this marvelous pool (when you come close to it), leading to the pulsing, spectral red vagina (sometimes called a portal - or if Lunar, replace "vagina" with "rectum").

Basically, you train our wonderful friend Meph to the rising pathway, as we teleport to the nearest ledge. Meph will then simply stand there and make noise, while we cast Meteor / Blizzard / Fist of the Heavens / Lightning / etc...

All the while, Meph sits there and stares malignantly at us, but does absolutely nothing to show that his noise is anything but frustration at his AI being terribly stunted.

So, in other words, we make Meph stationary - stupid.

How to do it:

Prerequisites
Need the skill Teleport
Need a ranged attack / skill

The steps are really quite simple:

1. Teleport to Meph
2. Lead him to the rising bridge
3. Teleport to the nearest ledge (by Teleporting across the moat)
4. Burn / freeze / zap / attack the idiot until dead

And that's it.

Obviously, since you are completely safe where you stand, this allows the player to stack a ridiculous amount of Magic Find items on their character.

Yes, with a well-built Hammerdin, Trapper, etc... you could do this with less steps and less time, but right now, we're all quite poor. Safety is nice.

Here is a video of such a trick being used (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=seTqbaxN5tE)

I still think three of us should get together and make a thorns paladin, iron maiden necromancer, and spirit of barbs druid. We can all ourselves The Three Masochiteers.

I actually want to make a summoner druid built like a glass cannon. Tons of dexterity and give him a bow. Then while my puppies hit stuff I can shoot things. I'd need a bow with special properties like a Buriza or something... Hmm.

Nominus Experse
07-05-2007, 06:21 PM
That build is called a Dark Ranger.

It was very effective in older patches (from what I read and am told)

Tavrobel
07-05-2007, 06:26 PM
Many builds were effective in old patches.

Nominus Experse
07-05-2007, 06:28 PM
How/why did the newer patches fuck so many things over? I thought patches were supposed to balance and refine particular aspects of the game, not nerf builds...

So what exactly happened? I've only been here since 1.11b.

Tavrobel
07-05-2007, 06:46 PM
Pre-1.09 (or technically, 1.10), Hell was significantly easier. However, when Blizzard introduced Synergies, they felt it was necessary to increase difficulty of Hell mode; in order to survive, one had to take advantage of Synergies.

This was done in an effort to reduce a number of Uber-builds, especially giving use to investing points into lower-grade spells that could be replaced easily: for example, to opt not to use Frozen Orb over Blizzard, or Grizzly over Wolves. The ones that they were concerned with especially, were Whirlwind and Corpse Explosion; and adding synergies, in theory, was to increase the number of viable builds.

How wrong they were! When they increased Hell's diffculty, it was found that only skills using Synergies would survive. Those builds which were found to be able to survive are the ones being used today. Now you can't have a Chain/Orb/Hydra Sorceress, anymore, it's now Meteor/Orb.

Seems like 1.10 was meant to fix things, but it went horribly wrong. They tried to add builds, but wound up reducing them to a bare minimum, even destroying half of the techtrees on current characters. they tried to reduce SoJ duping, in order to get rid of SoJ duping and Nagel/Manald abuses (this order was abolished in 1.08), but SoJs were duped even more so.

They even tried to accomodate mod-maker users, but wound up persecuting them even more fiercely.

And the original makers of the game had left. Things just seemed to go all wrong.

In 1.09, they also added the Ladder, and exponentially decreasing EXP gain past level 80.

Nominus Experse
07-05-2007, 06:56 PM
Wow...

That's all I can really say. Do they ever fucking test what they make/change?

Tavrobel
07-05-2007, 06:58 PM
Well, the makers of the game (original team) left some time before the completion of 1.09. 1.10 was a completely new scab team recruited in order to keep interest in Diablo II high. Suffice it to say, they had no idea what they were doing.

Nominus Experse
07-05-2007, 07:00 PM
I see. That would explain the torch... among other things.

LunarWeaver
07-05-2007, 07:01 PM
They increased the difficulty of hell by a ton and added synergies. The synergies made some skills capable in hell and others not so much.

For instance, traps used to be completely awful. They did like 200 damage and nobody used them; everybody used Martial sins instead. But when synergies were introduced, traps suddenly did thousands of damage. So when the enemies in hell got harder and the Martial tab was left completely as it was with no boost, the balance was effectively reversed.

So in short Hell just used to be much, much easier, so you could get away with doing silly little builds.

Edit: Yeah, what Tavrobel said.

Tavrobel
07-05-2007, 07:03 PM
Martial Sins are still fairly viable. But traps are indeed far more popular.

LunarWeaver
07-05-2007, 07:04 PM
Oh yeah, they're still capable and everything. I only used it as an example because it was the easiest I could think of I guess.

Tavrobel
07-05-2007, 07:07 PM
The two easiest ones are Corpse Explosion and Whirlwind. Those two skills alone made the game broken.

If you'd ever check the old Ladder (1.09), the very top was always Barb/Necro.

I remember old Corpse Explosion. It used to do something close to 1100% of Corpse life in /players 8.

LunarWeaver
07-05-2007, 07:09 PM
I remember at one point Corpse Explosion's radius was totally absurd  It hit for like 500 screens in every direction. Ah, that was forever ago though.

I'm still upset they put a timer on Dragon Flight and didn't put one on the Sorc's teleport.

Tavrobel
07-05-2007, 07:11 PM
That's because Dragon Flight did damage, which made it own.

LunarWeaver
07-05-2007, 07:13 PM
It's still a level 24 skill that only hits one person at a time and requires an enemy for it to work. Maybe if she teleported multiple times, like hitting 3-4 enemies at level 20, I could see a timer, but...They just killed it.

...They killed it :whimper:

I almost feel bad for anybody who didn't buy the Expansion. Their hell became harder, too, but they didn't get any of the new pretty items we did to help them deal with it. It'd be impossible for underpowered builds to pull through in Standard hell. Of course, that was probly Blizz's plan in the first place.

I say almost because anybody who still hasn't upgraded to the Expansion by now is pretty dumb, though.

A warning for all members: if anyone, so much as tries to mention the existence or attempts to discuss the Fluffy Puff forum skin whilst I am online, or in this thread, be forewarned that I will block you on every source possible and have your posts deleted.

This is not the place to discuss ShlupQuack, nor even feign respect for her nor her carapace. If anyone so much as tries to do so, they will be blocked, cut off, ignored, squelched, and then left to die.

Though I tolerate the use of the skin, be aware that this is a private matter, and in no way should be discussed or spread amongst the population. Any and all reports of thanking PMs to Shlup will be met with brutal and humiliating force. Worship of Psychotic, Levian, Yamaneko, Zeromus_X, Samuraid, and/or cl_out is acceptable.

Blizzard needs to release a "Common Diablo II player" patch that fixes all the bugs and annoyances.

But, knowing Blizzard, that will likely backfire.

LunarWeaver
07-08-2007, 06:37 PM
If they ever do release another patch, everything will just be flipped like always and all annoyances will remain. All the underpowered stuff will become overpowered, and the overpowered stuff will start to suck. It's what happens everytime they try and balance things.

Just look at Blessed Hammer. It used to do lots of damage and everybody used it for a short period of time. I'm talking, like, pre-Expansion. Then they nerfed it and it was horrible. But they didn't want nobody to use it, so they gave it a boost with Synergies and made it too strong again. They just can't seem to nail it o_o

Probably. Can't you see her butch figure and short hair?

Most of them have been dead for a couple hundred years.

Actually, that makes sense, since they are both in AIII. Ormus, a mage, likely comes from the same origin as the Council members. If his aging process were slowed by his magic (not a far cry), then he could have been, at one point, a Council member himself, before it was corrupted. It makes sense, since he is so out of it and awkward. He is familiar with Paladins (obviously). What skill did they have on them?

She probably dropped it.

Sanders is the KFC Colonel. Baal gets hungry sometimes, you know. Sanders can just buy himself a new pair. Preferably Italian in make, as the Colonel has good taste.

Nom, you've had sex more often than any of us in this thread. You should be the first person to know why.

Depends on who with. Those rogues and succubi aren't all evil, you know.

No. Shaman King Koth, who was Leonidas in a previous life, repelled Diablo and his minions from assaulting Mount Arreat in ages past. therefore, the outcome is that he won, and cannot be compared to Sparta.

Nominus Experse

I think Ormus and Mephisto are gay lovers, and the whole quest involving Meph's defeat is simply Ormus using the player as a means of sticking it to him.

Ormus didn't get enough sex and/or flowers from Mephisto. That's why Meph had Ormus' Robes. He secretly smelled them while in his dark, dank Durance.

Or something.

I tried Baldur's Gate because it is often compared to the Diablo series. The console Dark Alliance games maybe, but the PC ones are totally different. Maybe I'm too retarded to understand the AD&D rules that the game runs on, but I thought it was the most boring thing ever coming off the Blizzard titles. The stats you start with are pretty much all you ever get, and everybody is too similar :(. And the spell casters that can only cast something so many times before they must go to town and rest. Let's all picture being able to cast Frozen Orb 3 times before you have to go sleep at an inn and get it back.

Great Jubbah, I really will have to get Hellgate: London to satisfy my aches.

Right now I'm downloading slowly buying another Diablo rip-off called Divine Divinity (worse title ever but let us not judge). If I don't like it, I'll totally get Titan Quest.

I also slowly bought Starcraft about a week ago. It's actually quite fun. I'm only on Episode II of the game's scenarios and it's already too hard for me though. I'm a baby when it comes to real-time strategy games.

If all else fails, I'll just have to buy Marvel Alliance. X-Men Legends II copied so heavily off of Diablo II I honestly think that Blizzard could win a case against them in court. 4cereal. I expect Marvel Alliance is probably the same, so what can ya do. Spider-Man instead of Amazons.

An odd thing happened today:

I painted a window earlier this week, but then realized that I had basically painted the window shut - effectively making it a wall with glass in it. So today, in an attempt to once again open the window, I pushed and shoved, punched and threw my weight up against the window, trying desperately to once again make the window, well, a window.

I had moved it up about 2mm when suddenly I found my hand on the other side of the window. Right before my life began draining out of me in a rapid vermilion torrent, I thought,

"Damn, they should have the windows in the Monastery shatter. That'd be rather... neat."

And then I bled everywhere as I looked for a first aid kit that apparently does not exist in my abode. So I ran to my neighbor's house, asking if I could get some gauze. Lo and behold!, they don't have one either. However, they did have some Carefree Maxipads, and so I took one of those and kept it secured via a massive butterfly bandage.

As the pad absorbed my blood, I vaguely recalled watching countless commercials detailing how well these pads absorb moisture. Most people don't experience PMS of their hand, but meh...

But I must say, theres nothing more priceless than greeting my girl with a bloodied Maxipad strapped to my hand, complete with blood dribbling down my arm and being flicked every which way as I wave.

Does anyone know why I don't have any 3D sound options in the Sound Options part of the menu? Here's what happened....

When I installed Windows Vista, everything went fine except that Creative had not released any Vista compatible drivers, and Microsoft didn't have any compatible drivers for the X-Fi Xtreme Music Platinum Soundblaster card, so I was stuck with this basic sound driver that gave me monaural sound. And thus the 3D sound options in D2 didn't work, understandably so. However, Creative finally came out with some new drivers and software, I installed them and sound is working just fine now. However, the 3D sound options in D2 still are not accessible. Is there anything to be done about this? Do I need to un- and re-install D2 or something weird like that?

Well, it turns out NM Meph does have the highest drop rate for Bartuc's, so smurf you Meph. But anyway, since SOJs are nice to have and nice as trade items, I ran a calculation for that too. I knew normal Diablo was up there, but I didn't know he was second.

http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i29/LunarWeaver/SOJCalculations.jpg

Those calculations are using my Non-Ladder MF'ers Magic Find, but it doesn't matter if you're wearing 0% or 1 billion percent, the list will remain consistent of course. NM Duriel and Andariel are close to each other. You could run both in one game and probably turn up decent results. Not that any of you care anymore, losers.

Well, I knew Duriel is up there for Unique jewelry, but Hell Cow King for HoZ? Are you serious? Wow.

You're confusing it for CoH, Chains of Honor, a +2 skills runeword with damage reduction, and +65 all resistances, Dol Um Ber Ist on a 4Os Armor. CoA is the Crown of Ages Unique Corona (I think it's a Corona), with 1-2 sockets, damage reduction, FHR, and +skills.

Bul-Kathos' Tribal Children goes Threash Socket, Snapchip Shatter (who the hell is that), Pindleskin, Frozenstein, and then off into regular enemies with such a low drop rate it's insane. 3rd Blizzard Title Confirmed - Elly [0:09:PST]

We sort of knew this was the case, but in a Gamasutra news article (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=14691), Blizzard's Frank Pierce (vice president of product development) has confirmed that there is a third Blizzard development team who are working on a completely new game.

When pressed for details regarding the new project, Pearce was cagey. "Team 3 is working on something really awesome. I can’t give you any hints, but it’s totally awesome."
We're guessing Diablo III, which would make sense as Blizzard had already started the game development some time ago before Blizzard North was broken up. We know that development was scrapped following the departure of of the Diablo team from Blizzard to form Flagship Studios but we understand the Blizzard team started afresh. Will BlizzCon bring news of this new title? Here's hoping! Thanks to nobbie for the news tip.

I thought it was funny the vice prez of all Blizzard would say "Totally awesome" for some reason xD.

I normally don't believe these "omg d3?!" rumors as they've been happening forever, but with Starcraft II being announced after so long, who knows, yeah?

Edit Mach IV: If you want, I can e-mail it to you, Chimney ;O

Yeah you were.

That's very odd, but since they are such lowly found items, they probably would not have a listing. CoA and Ondals have very high levels to not be found outside of Hell, I would imagine. Both are unique Elites.

LOL Thresh Socket. He and Pindleskin used to be the most run MF, since they were so easy to get to, and they dropped almost every item in the game. But since they have been nerfed, who knows what they can drop. List of the top five items for both, please.

Also, WTF?! We're talking about Diablo II?

Does this surprise you?

We sort of knew this was the case, but in a Gamasutra news article (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=14691), Blizzard's Frank Pierce (vice president of product development) has confirmed that there is a third Blizzard development team who are working on a completely new game.

I normally don't believe these "omg d3?!" rumors as they've been happening forever, but with Starcraft II being announced after so long, who knows, yeah?

It could be that new RPG they were always talking about, which isn't DIII, but a new series altogether.

Are those numbers consistent with what would happen on Ladder?

The only thing different on Ladder is the inclusion of Ladder-only items. Tyrael's armor, Andy's Visage, etc.

Why no wantie Diablo III? By the time it gets here we'll probly all be dead anyway. Hm, that referenced news article says they aren't giving up on Starcraft: Ghost after all. Poor game.

Because the original team won't be making it. I don't want another WoW.

It does worry me Bill and such wouldn't be working on a Diablo III, but the foundation is already pretty laid. All they have to do is rename the characters to something like "Ninja" instead of Assassin, give them new skills and new things to kill, and then slap a 3 on it and it's done! Although I suppose at this point it's natural to expect more from Blizzard and this franchise than just a normal sequel with little innovation.

It could always be a new franchise, but I still can't help but hope it's III. Maybe they've recruited fresh blood as good as the old team by now. You people are making me into the hopeful one! I demand I get to be the cynic this instant.

If I am wearing an item that has a "Damage Reduced" suffix, and I am a Paladin with a Thorns aura active, is the damage that the aggressor takes in any form reduced due to me taking less damage?

So, basically, is the damage the opponent receives the actual damage I receive after the Damage Reduction ___ or % is applied to the original calculation of what the damage would have been BEFORE it was reduced by X?

ie.:

Let's say an enemy would normally inflict 500 damage
If I have items that reduces damage inflicted by 50%, I obviously only receive 250 damage.

I have my Lvl 20 Thorns aura active, which is supposed to have a return of 1010% damage
Is this damage actually inflicted on my character? Or is it what the damage would have been if I DID NOT have any damage reduction?

Additionally, is there any way to multiply the suffix "Attacker Takes Damage of..."? Or is this suffix only additive?in any form reduced due to me taking less damage?

EDIT: If I have an "Enhanced Damage xxx%" modifier, is the "Attacker Takes Damage of..." suffix affected?

The Damage Reduced is applied first, if I remember it correctly. There's an order for this stuff.

If you had 50% DR against a 1000 attack and a 100% Thorns Aura, you would reflect 100% of 500, which is 500.

No. Attacker takes damage every time they successfully hit you. This number does not change, and is not affected by defense or any other mods. As such, it usually remains a low number. It's trash.

That's why you use Lightning Shield. Barbarians are the best class besides a Retaliator Paladin.

LOL no. Bloodzons are the third best.

Just in case you are wondering, the next best classes would be a Gamma Cheese/LOLFountain Druid, and a Acid Fiends/Charmer Druid.

Does the Necro begin to lose his power once Nightmare hits? His summons seem quite powerful now, but I could definitely see the quality of summons become less and less, eventually becoming a continuous blitzkreig rather than tactical.

60+ summons sounds awesome, but if they can't really deal much damage or survive long enough to deal it...

Tell more about Bloodzons. Is there a site with various builds for this current patch, Tav? I haven't had much time to truly expiriment past level 20.

Phrozen Keep, center of Laz' realm. (http://phrozenkeep.planetdiablo.gamespy.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=137) Notice if you will, that our friend Captain Maxx Power of the holy order of the Red Mage Pirates is a moderator here.

I haven't done much with Necros. Hell, I haven't done nearly anything with Necros. As far as I know, depending on the summon specialized in, you have difficulty with certain parts of the game, and certain parts are easily passed by. I do know that Acid Fiends on Druid by themselves are rather painful as they get smashed apart without a secondary damage source, but fare well early on, and hold their own in Destruction, if you are meticulous enough to do one enemy at a time. It is plausible to do a Totem-buff summon build, but your skill will be stretched fairly thin.

If going summon with totem buff (similar to Poison Charming Druids), invest in the Death's Fury Totem. HP isn't much of a problem as long as you can keep summoning things. As for summons, I personally would invest in Lamia, perhaps Overlord, and Shadows. Lamia excel in dealing damage, Shadows have an HP buff, and Overlord lets you have more of them. Demon Blood and Ghoul Touch minion buffs also add a slow and more elemental damage.

Your uberskill I would think best to be Soulshatter, since it gives you an alternate damage source. If you find it rediculously necessary, get Deathstrike, your Crossbows skill. An essential for any Necromancer is 1 point in Nightmare and Unholy Armor.

If you need runes and find any of interest, let me know.

I would imagine that your skills would look akin to this:
Maxed Lamia
Maxed Death's Fury
Maxed Deathstrike
Maxed Soulshatter
a few points in Shadows, Demon Blood, Ghoul Touch
1 point in Nightmare, Unholy Armor, prerequisites

If you want some OSkills, Corruption gives access to Acid Fiends, Nahual gives some Barbarian summons. Anything with +skills would help immensely. This is your only source of extra damage.

I have discovered that Deathstrike is fun as hell. A shame there doesn't seem to be a weapon that truly excels with this skill though...

There's the Sacred Set, but... If I am to get the Necromancer's Set, I may as well use the Summoner oriented one - which uses a wand instead of a crossbow.
