*Nubcake question*
What are these guilds and clans I hear of from time to time? A few people have tried getting me to join their clan/guild, sometimes even with enticing items.
So, veterans of online Diablo, what exactly are these guilds and clans that I sometimes hear of? Are they good, bad, etc?

Anyone have a spare Wizardspike?
Guilds and clans were going to be an official thing in the game's system, but it was scrapped. If you hear of a guild or clan, they are just people that play together and give themselves a team name or something. I would say that we are a clan. A guild is a little too organized for us, and we are not as exclusive as guilds can be, but we are definately a clan.

So, veterans of online Diablo, what exactly are these guilds and clans that I sometimes hear of? Are they good, bad, etc?
Diablo II guilds and clans aren't really nubcake questions. This is a hard concept to grasp or explain.
Mostly, it is spill-off from the days of Starcraft popularity. In Starcraft, you could have what is called an Op channel, where a person, say "Moria" is currently in channel "Op Moria." Moria would have moderator functions, such as banning, kicking, and adding ops to a secondary "heir" (this is the offical term given from Battle.net when you "op" someone). People would often congregate in these channels with operational moderators (and heirs), and play together. This was done often because people were friends and had a common goal or interest, or even a style of gameplay.
Around 2002, Op channels and clans became much, much more proficient and widely recognized. While moderator options were not expanded, the release of the LotR movies began heralding a major shift in the maps played on Starcraft, called LotR (using LotR or Silmarillion heroes) or LotRish (using original heroes or stories). The premise of these maps is not necessary to know. During this time, Diablo had begun to get its synergies, forcing people to play in a party come Hell mode. Since Starcraft and Diablo use the same account information and realmtags, people would often switch on and off Diablo or Starcraft rapidly.
Essentially, Clans and Guilds are as SRL said. Clans are people who take common nametags (as account creation is incredibly easy), and play together, whether it be melee, UMS, or played DII. Guilds, however, aren't quite what one would think of in WoW (I also believe the WoW system is a bastardized version of Starcraft's), Guilds are simply a common group of people that share a common goal and may congregate in channels, but hold no allegiance to each other. Guild politics, while being severely anarchic, often did not have to deal with sabotage or things of the like, for people were merely associated, but not a part of something.
Whether they are good or evil, is really a question that could only be answered in the prime of their days. The Warcraft III system heavily contributed to popularity of Clans, since you can register "offical" clans, in the Warcraft III channels, and even something called "Clan" channels. The difference between these and Op channels, is that Clan channels are private unless allowed otherwise (they are also locked off when no one is in them, except Clan Members).
This leads to the conclusion that Ops channels can quickly be brought down by spammers (often Moderators and Spammers were bots), and force a disbandment due to raw confusion, and if successful, people would not know where to go and leaders would be forced to start over; Bots would sometimes lag from the spam, and disconnect, forcing no operational control. Clans can slo have up to 7 or 10 moderators, based on clan size. Clans in WCIII are disbanded only by Leaders (from 1 to all 10 of the original Clan founders), and all members are tagged until disbandment, and no longer need a new account (this is optional to make a new one). Strcraft players may join or be associated to WC clans, but are not offical members.
Clan politics are relatively close to international politics. Clans began dying out after the release of LotR: RotK, as the LotR buzz began fading. There are a few clans that survived, such as the ones on Warcraft III, if for melee (or non-LotR), and several DII and SC non-LotR clans.
Generally, I would discourage them, simply because they are needless trauma and pointless war making.

For one reason or another, I found a Collosus Voulge and a Cryptic Axe within minutes of each other. Socketed, what might these be worth? 1 or 2 hrs?
I also found an Arioc's Needle with +3 Skills and 230% Dmg Incease. Is this worth anything?
SeeDRankLou

If they are 4 or 5os the polearms will go for at least 1 hr. Infinity, Doom, Hand of Justice, Passion, Pheonix, Pride and Rift are all used on an act 2 merc (the first two being the most common), and socketed elite polearms are hard to come by. Some builds even benefit from an Insight all the way through their levels and end up putting Insight on an elite polearm (many who use an Insight only need it until @lv 75, so it gets put on an exceptional polearm). I don't think many people use a Cresent Moon, Breath of the Dying or Last Wish on their merc, but you might be able to sell a 3os or 6os one if someone wants to do that. I've seen all of the above runewords on act 2 mercs, but never those three. Still, you might get lucky. Also, due to the high str req on a Collossus Voulge you might not get that many takers on it. But you will definately get takers on the Cryptic Axe, which would be optimal for those runewords (unless it was ED-Superior and Ethereal, but those only exist in fairy tales  ).
Also, an Arioc's Needle is a common replacement for a lack of runeword Polearm, and you got the high end of the damage on that one. +3 to skills is not the highest, but still high. I would say you could get 2 hrs for that one.

They are only worth something if 4Os, or ethereal. The CV is worth more than the Cryptic Axe, because it's max of sockets is four. However, if they are both already 4Os, then the CV will fetch a high rune. Keep the Cryptic Axe, because it;s not worth anything, but a 4Os Pole is a 4Os Pole. You won't get anything better, nor could you expect to. There's no way to get it to 2 high runes, unless it is the CV, Superior with maximum enhanced damage (15%), Ethereal, and already has 4Os, and even then, that's pushing it.
No, but as SRL says, it's a replacement for Insight, Doom, or Pride A2 mercenaries. No one uses anything else, because they aren't really worth using on a mercenary. Those with A2 mercenaries are always busting out the Auras.
I've decided to try and make a Hammerdin.
Any suggestions in terms of items and skills I ought to place effort in? What auras effect Blessed Hammer, what enemies are immune to this attack, etcetera etcetera...
Vigor - synergy, max
Hammers - main attack, max
Concentrate - provides a massive bonus, max
Blessed Aim - synergy, max
Holy Shield - defensive properties, as it goes
Don't waste ANY skills in anything unnecessary, or anything past where you need it to be. You will need all of these skills for an effective Hammerdin, because, guess what, Hammerdins that only do 10k are considered "low." FCR is incredibly useful and a major necessity. The best of Hammerdins can do up to 20k with the right Grand Charms.
Stat distribution should go something akin to this:
Str - enough for Enigma (~77 for DS, ~105? for AP) and other spellcaster equipment
Dex - none, all should be provided by equipment bonuses, your primary weapon should be Hoto
Vit - all
Mana - none
Equipment should be close to, or exactly this:
Helm - any +skills, Shako, Ber'd or Um'd
Armor - Enigma
Weapon - Hoto or Spirit, CtA for the BO on tab 2
Shield - HoZ or Paladin Spirit with 35+ natural resistance, low or spare Paladin Spirit on tab 2
Gloves - Magefists or Trang Oul's for the FCR, no real options here
Belt - anything with resistance, Arach's (LOL like you're gonna get that)
Boots - anything with resistance, you don't really have too many options here)
Rings - SoJ, Manald, or FCR with resistance
Amulet - either a Rare with +Paladin Skills, resistance, life, or mana, or a +3 Combat Skills or Offensive Aura magic amulet
Charms - Paladin Offensive Auras, Paladin Combat Skills, Lifers
If you're going for an MFer build:
Shako with Ist or PTopaz
Enigma
6 Ist Sword, Gull, Ali Baba's with Ist
Rhyme, Milabrega's, Splendor
Any gloves
War Traveler's
Nagelrings
Anything with MF
Any charms work
Your mercenary, you should only have at level 80, and until then, do Baal runs:
Insight on Elite Pole
Fortitude Armor
Any +Str helm, such as Guillame's or Natalya's, Dream
Aura - Holy Freeze, Defiance, Prayer
Don't worry about Immune monsters. Demons and Undead take full or extra damage. Only Magic Immune Animals are of any concenr, of which there are very few.

I've updated the player information panel.
Added a Median section. Maxx Power is noted to be in charge of this one, and has been removed from inactive players, while Khaotic has moved down.
Also note that I have added tags after player names. If you need to remember which accounts to add, add only the ones with the (primary) tag after the account name. These, for the time being, will be Tavrobel, Valarauko, and Faelivrin. You may remove the others from your friends list to save space.
In the next update, I may consider adding AIM, MSN, or Y!M names, if provided.
If you have private games where people can find you whilst not in EoFF (and you do not disdain being disturbed at the time), then provide them for me, if you wish.

I'll be developing the Median section next update, assuming anyone gets back to me.
8 PMs and only one response. I feel so neglected.
Even Psychotic and Lunarweaver are ignoring me.
EDIT: Diablo II is a fucking Jewish game. I just lost a 33 Hoto for no goddamn reason, because I thought the game was still EoFF, when it wasn't. So I forgot the password, and couldn't get it back. Lost my Druid's gloves, also. Now I'm back down to 2 Hoto instead of three. A 33 Hoto lost is not worth a 37 made. Fucking Jewish game.
EDIT2: You know, I used to think that hacking was for newbs, or duping, but I see now it isn't. with a game that has nothing to support loyal players, Blizzard consistently attempts to screw you over, and will do anything in its power to do so. Hacking on SC and WCIII is still Jewish, by all means. But in DII it just seems that people are also trying to make up for unjustly lost items.

I just don't understand why you guys want to continue playing normal D2, I honestly cannot see what is keeping you guys playing the same old thing everyday, it's not even like a real mmorpg, the community is nearly non-existent, you need to risk dupes and other malicious trades, you do the same thing every_single_game, and there's nothing to even look forward to.
Atleast in something like Median you can do the uberquests, hunt for new items, make new runewords, and most important, you don't need to deal with Bnet problems.

Now I have another hdin, a good barb, another orbsorc, an elemental druid, and an amazon that's coming along.
And yes, Tav, there is a clearance, the regular WIII is 4:58 or something so because I get a 10% discount hells yes, I'll buy it, only assuming it's good.

Not to mention, each game has randomization. "Yeah, yeah" I hear, but for example: my Fire Sorc can clean the floor one time, but if I encounter Fire Immunes (Like the Undead Knights in Worldstone Keep/Chaos Sanctuary) I have to pray that my merc can handle them. not to mention, it helps that I'm building to achieve an item set, so that helps. In short...I dunno. Obsessiveness? I just know I like it!

How do you get Forgotten Sands?
You synthesize three Keys dropped by the Countess, the Summoner, and Nihlathak, the Terror, Hate, and Destruction. Upon making, it will create one of three portals, one of which leads to an uber boss; one of them is Duriel.
This is part of the Uber Tristram Uber-Quest.
By using the Uber Duriel Mod, you can get it by a simple modification of the d2_patch.mpq file in your local Diablo II folder, and two major waypoints, Canyon of the Magi, and either the second or third in Act 5. The modification can be found here (http://www.edgeofnowhere.cc/viewtopic.php?t=348408&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0). However, note that this is, by definition, a modification, and you can have your account banned by playing this on the closed realms.
By the way, unless you have a pure, concentrated, magic caster build, you will have a very difficult time defeating Duriel. My 7k Zealadin and 5k Tornado Druid can't even defeat Uber Duriel easily. My Frenzy Barb can do this, but only because his attack beard is too fast for Duriel to handle. And you need micromanagement skills.

Lvl 9 Fanaticism
Lvl 20 Concentration
Lvl 15+ Might
Lvl 14 Holy Fire
Lvl 15 Holy Shock
Lvl 20 Thorns
Two of them aren't really needed, but I wanted to make something out of my Superior Troll Nest, and I already had a Bramble.
And I also happened to make a +6 BO CtA yesterday, effectively making my minions invincible.
2325.93 HP per Skeleton Warrior and 898.53 per Skeletal Mage.
And my Fire Golem will have 12976.53 HP. A Clay Golem would sit in the range of 48000 HP.
Eventually, without any charms, I will end up sitting in the 4000s.

Trang's Belt
Trang's Gloves
Maras
2x SoJ
On switch, its CtA with Spirit
I do have some resistance small charms on a few other characters, but I believe I'll still be sitting in the negatives when those are applied to this character.
I won't be on until later today, as I have the day with my girl.
Tavrobel
04-15-2007, 08:34 PM
Trang's Belt could be replaced with Credendum of the Disciple set, which has +15 resistance, as the synergy for Trang's +40 Cold needs 3 items. Your Boots should either be Aldur's or high Natalya's. Armor should be Enigma, or Chains of Honor, if your resistance REALLY need the kick.
Generally, Summoners should use Enigma, just so you dont lose anything, but Summoners usually don't ever get hit. Ditch the Bramble, as Thorns can be provided by a little friend I like to call, an Act II mercenary, more specifically, Combat Nightmare.
Your merc could wear it instead, and you can opt for a Might/Defiance mercenary, but you sacrifice Fortitude. Then you can make a Doom, which has Holy Freeze, Pride, which has Concentrate, Hand of Justice has Holy Fire, Infinity (LOL YEAH RIGHT).
Can't use Last Wish because of Beast, but that may be covered by mercenary. Dragon can be worn, if you lack a Holy Fire.
I'll finish this up later after a response or further research.

It depends greatly on what class and even more importantly, what build you plan on creating of that character.
Everyone continues to love and adore Shakos, Vampire Gazes, Crown of Ages; Torches, Annis; SoJs/BKs/Ravenfrosts; and Maras/Cat's Eyes/Highlord's/Seraph's; godly rare/crafted items, most notably circlets and ammies; skillers and res small charms with life mods; etc...
The above is quite general, as a Cerberus Bite means nothing to an Auramancer, but might make a Shapeshifting Druid quite happy.
In short, it depends on your class and build.

Well my good characters on my USWest account... one is a Summoning Necro, he has Full Trangs, Arm of Leoric, Marrowwalk, SOjs, Mara, torch, anni etc etc etc.
My other is a sorc which really wasn't that great anymore. Trielemental (Thunderstorm, Meteor, orb) Lots of charms and the like but otherwise bland since I made her pre 1.11 (Pre-synergies)
But I love playing characters of all sorts. All my other characters worth anything were deleted long ago, but I also enjoy bowazons and assassins of any kind from time to time.
I just started a summ. necro on East, so that'll be the first char I build up.

Actually, I just realized why it was that I wanted the Infinity rune word so very much: 40% crushing blow. Pride may be glorious in how much damage it can create, but crushing blow is far faster.
Taking 1/8 or 1/16 off of Baal/Diablo/Mephisto's life makes a difference when they begin with 660k life (by the time they reach a level of health to where crushing blow no longer matters, the normal damage output ought to suffice). The chance to cut their life bit by bit means more in the end than what Pride gives.
Combined with Guillaume's Face, that's 75% of Crushing Blow on my merc.
And with a lovely mob of Urdars/Gorebellies/etc, there ought to be a a lot of Crushing Blow.
I don't think that the extra 40% is really needed, due to the Urdars, but having it would be rather nice indeed.

I hate those builds that are really boring until lv 30. Take for example the Singing Barb. Standard melee Barb until level 30, which quite frankly is boring. Battle Cry made it a tad interesting, but now that I have War Cry it's actually fun. I can Leap into the center of a pack and start War Cry-ing, and they are all stunned and helpless to do anything. This is the first time that the only real option for an act 2 merc is the Prayer one. Of course I'm not in nightmare yet, but I might try out a Thorns merc, just for the hell of it. None of their auras really help this character, except for Prayer, which helps a tad. Or maybe a Might merc for his own benefit. I don't know, but at least it's playable now.

CB does not stack. If you have a value of 25% CB, and 66% CB, those values will only trigger respectively, not additive. CB is also reduced in great proportions against bosses, particularly against Uber-bosses. The only character who can use CB is a Smiter, because they have a natural stun, Life Tap, and life. Urdars don't have that luxury, nor the IAS.
By the way, the ubers eat mercenaries as quickly as I drink water. And there ain't no one who drinks water like me.
Stick with the Pride. It won't matter how much damage your mercenary can do, because he will be dead the entire time. Plus, if your goons are going to hit the monsters in Tristram, they'll need all the damage they can get, not just one character, hitting something repeatedly, hopefully, not dying.

How does Crushing Blow work, anyways?
Tavrobel
04-17-2007, 08:57 PM
Percentage listed is the likelihood of doing that much percent from an enemy's HP or adds to damage, whichever is greater. Essentially, if you have 65% CB, there is a 65% chance for you to deal an attack that takes 65% of the enemy's HP, unless the damage you deal is greater than that amount.
SeeDRankLou
04-17-2007, 09:43 PM
Tav, are you sure you are talking about Crushing Blow?
Taken from http://battle.net/diablo2exp/items/magic.shtml#sma (scroll down a little)
Crushing Blow
This is a chance of reducing a monster's health by X% in a single blow.
-Default: 1/4th
-vs. Players: 1/10th
-vs. Hirelings: 1/10th
-vs. Champions, Uniques, Bosses: 1/8th
-with missile weapons, default: 1/8th
-with missile weapons, vs. Players: 1/20th
-with missile weapons, vs Hirelings: 1/20th
-with missile weapons, vs Champions, Uniques, Bosses: 1/16th
The life removed is also scaled with number of players. So that if a monster has 450% more life due to 8 players (or whatever the value is) the life removed is further reduced by the same amount (450% would equal multiplying by 4.5 so the life removed by Crushing Blow is divided by 4.5).
* It is possible to get up to 100% chance for Crushing Blow. Anything above 100% is discarded.
* Physical resistance does apply to Crushing Blow damage, but only if the resistance is positive.
* Crushing Blow Items stack in most cases.
* Since 1.10 Crushing Blow is calculated before your normal damage. So, before doing the damage that you would normally do, there is a chance you will reduce the health of the monster by X% then normal damage apply to the resulting lower life. If you have more than one item with Crushing Blow, the probabilities will be added together. There will be one random check for a Crushing Blow. There is no check for each separate item, so one can not get multiple Crushing Blows in one attack.

I need a few of your brains to help my own shriveled up one.
For my Enchantress Sorceress, I'm wondering if I ought to place all my points in Mana instead of Vitality.
I wonder if this may be a better option than Vitality due to the fact that Energy Shield will absorb around 93-95 percent of all damage done in exchange for around .75 Mana per point of damage. Additionally, there are items that boost maximum Mana by a very substantial amount , whereas I have yet to see an item give a maximum Life boost of 40% or 25%. Obviously, the higher the base number, the greater the percentage increase. A Sorceress also gains more Mana than Life per level.
And since I'm maxing Warmth and Enchant due to its bonuses (Increased Dmg, AR, and duration), "Life" will have a recovery rate of around 360%. I've thought about using an Insight mercenary, which would give me a Mana regeneration of around 1060%, but I don't know how applicable that would actually be. And the Conviction Aura is somewhat needed due to Sorceresses not having any skills other than Enchant that grant AR bonuses - not to mention the fact that such an aura removes most Lightning and/or Fire immunities.
3000 or so Mana is quite a barrier, if I do say so myself, and made even more so when each point of damage done is literally reduced by a 1/4 before my ES feels the brunt of it. But that barrier can be broken, especially since it takes full damage instead of receiving resist bonuses (I believe). Only my Life receives such a luxury. And the scary part of it all is that I would only have around 580 Life if I pour points in Mana instead of Life.
It's a shame that resists are not factored in until after Energy Shield has taken damage, because I ought to have 74% resists on all elements in Hell difficulty - a feat usually only achieved by Paladins.
So I'm not entirely certain what route I ought to take. I have done a number of test runs in Single Player, and placing all my points in Mana instead of Life seemed a better option. The only real issue I had when placing all my points in Mana instead of Vitality was when I came across hordes of Lightning enchanted Scarab Beetles in the Worldstone Keep. For one reason or another, these slaughtered me (probably because of the resists not being factored in for ES), even going so far as to crash the game.
But everything else, I was able to kill (and with ease, I might add) and survive with payers set to 8 - including Baal's Minions of Destruction.
Everything dies in one or two hits, and Baal dies in around four or five.
31897 average damage is sexy (without Conviction Aura from Mercenary factored in).
*An interesting thing I found out is that I am almost immune to the curses Weaken and Iron Maiden. Since all my damage comes from a stacked Lvl 30 Holy Shock aura and Enchant, The effects of Weaken or minimal, and Iron Madain only caused my Mana to deplete by around 700-1000.
EDIT: I was thinking that it may prove beneficial for all of us playing to make a list of items that we are currently IN NEED OF, OMFG looking for. It may a compliment to the character sheet, or I could simply post updates every week.
If this sounds of any use or interest to you, PM me.
And I need a pair of Frostburns, along with any Small Charms with the following mods:
Fine (AR)
Steel (AR)
Iron (AR)
Serpent's (Mana)
Vita (Life)
Balance (FHR)
Any small charms that deal more than 20-30 Fire or Lightning damage.
Tavrobel
04-20-2007, 05:55 PM
To be honest, I don't know how Energy Shield works best, nor Enchant. I know that there are some attacks that can ignore Energy Shield, and ALWAYS deal Life damage. With boosted Mana, you will also have to worry about Blood Curse.
You will have to worry about your Mana instead of your life, but Warmth and Insight could take care of that, if you're completely drained of Mana. You could also invest in one of the Ice Armors, if you have some spare skills.
BTW, both my Druid and Hammerdin have full resistances in Hell. My Barbarian and Zealadin can cast Fade.
Shriveled brains are a sign of intelligence, since the greater the creases in your brain, the more information.
Nominus Experse
04-20-2007, 06:12 PM
It will net me more points if I devote points into Energy instead of Vitality, so I think I'll do that.
As for the attacks that pass through ES... I guess I'll either have to kill very swiftly or Tele away.
And yes, one of the Ice armours is most definitely needed for the Defense boost (~65%).
My characters always suck when it comes to resists, so this is something new to me.
And yes, indeed, shriveled brains are more intelligent, but I fear mine sometimes goes lax.

Does anyone know if you can stack auras on your character? I know you cannot do this on your mercenary any longer since there was a bug involved in stacking auras on your merc (duping or making you invincible - something of that nature).
But I haven't read anything that says if you can or can't do this on your character....

Define stacking, please, as my merc has Prayer and Meditation, and both work seamlessly, I think.
Nominus Experse
04-20-2007, 07:29 PM
Stacking would be when you have two auras of the same, such as a Dream Helmet and a Dream Shield. Both grant a Lvl 15 Holy Shock aura, and if they stack, they would then net me a Lvl 30 Holy Shock aura.
So basically, its adding like aura levels up.
With a Lvl 20 Lightning Mastery, the Lightning damage bonuses of a high Holy Shock aura are insane.
However, you can't do this on a merc now, and the same may or may not be true for your actual character.
Tavrobel
04-20-2007, 07:35 PM
Define stacking, please, as my merc has Prayer and Meditation, and both work seamlessly, I think.
Putting on the same Aura twice on a character. For example, a Paladin with Last Wish, and Might skilled to level 20. Having Might active while Last Wish is equipped, would be stacking.
Different auras, such as Prayer and Meditation, work normally, and are calculated independently of each other.
However, in Diablo II, the non Holy Auras cannot stack. The one that is the strongest will take over, unless multiple characters have the same item. The character with the strongest source will apply to others, but the one with a weaker source will apply based on whose was cast (or switched) the most recently.
In simpler terms, if I had two Paladins, one with a level 15 and a level 12 Concentrate, the level 15 would affect everyone. However, if the level 12 switches his skill to his own Concentrate, his Concentrate will be calculated, instead of the 15. However, this does not compromise allied damage.
This seems to be my understanding of the situation.
Does anyone know if you can stack auras on your character? I know you cannot do this on your mercenary any longer since there was a bug involved in stacking auras on your merc (duping or making you invincible - something of that nature).
But I haven't read anything that says if you can or can't do this on your character....
I haven't found it either. Continuing on from my previous paragraph, normally, Auras don't stack. However, the Holy Auras (Fire, Freeze, and Shock) are supposedly able to stack. I've never heard of them duping, but they can make you riggedly uber. I believe that in the patch notes, this was stopped in a previous patch, but I do not know for sure., since Blizzard patch notes are so reliable.
This seemed to only apply to Mercenaries, when I heard about it, however.
I, personally, would go with the safer route, and make a Dragon shield.

Which is why (Or at least so I've heard) that the only way to be able to use onviction on the Ubers it to first be able to beat Mephisto's aura in level, yes?
Tavrobel

I think they apply differently when enemies have the same aura. However, Conviction is an exception, and why is of a complete mystery to me. Conviction doesn't affect its caster.
Yes, Mephisto's Conviction can be cancelled when a Paladin has a level Conviction > Mephisto's. The one from Mercenary and Infinity is too low to be boosted, and Mercenaries tend to die. Alot.

Okay, I'm looking for an opinion for my Uber build for my sorc (Aside from the fact that I have a LOT of wishful thinking going on...)
Helm: Dream. Decent Res. All (5-20 I believe) and if Lightning Mastery Affects the active aura, all the better.
Armor: Chains of Honor. I have it, and it quite simply can't be beat. Massive Resistance bonus, good skills boost, can't lose!
Shield: Spirit. Pretty much, see above.
Weapon: Heart of the Oak. A whopping +3 all skills and a myriad of sweet bonuses. Plus, as a flail, it can help me out if I need to duke it out (God forbid...)
Boots: Aldur's. Have 'em, but it balances the Fire that Spirit lacks.
Here's where it gets into Wishful thinking:
Belt: The Spider Belt (It's name eludes me) solely for another +1 to skills.
Ammy: Mara's Amulet
Rings: A SoJ and a Bul Kathos (Yeah, right. :p)
Any suggested tweaks?

There will be no Avril Lavigne references in my thread.
Helm should be Shako. Dream does not help Lightning skills at all, since Holys only affect melee damage.
Weapon should be an Eschuta's. It is much better than Hoto, damage-wise. Sorceress don't hit with melee weapons. Ever. And I do mean ever. Same skill bonus (if found properly), and a bonus to damage percentage. By the way, Flails don't actually deal damage once past Normal Act I.
Belt is Arach's.
Both rings should be an SoJ. Bul Kathos is for melee characters only, since Sorceresses don't use Lifesteal or Manasteal.

+1, +2, +3. You really do need to learn your essential items.
+% Damage is for Fire and Lightning, ranging from 10 to 20% for each one separately.

What I would use:
HELM
Harlequin Crest Shako
Defense: 98-141 (varies)
Required Level: 62
Required Strength: 50
Durability: 12
+2 To All Skills
+ (1.5 Per Character Level) 1-148 To Life (Based On Character Level)
+ (1.5 Per Character Level) 1-148 To Mana (Based On Character Level)
Damage Reduced By 10%
50% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items
+2 To All Attributes
OR
Rare circlet with +10-20 FCR, +2/3 Fire/Sorc Skills
To get resists out of the Shako, Um it. The Shako is really quite hard to beat, and the only thing missing from it is the FCR mod.
WEAPON
Eschuta's Temper Eldritch Orb
One-Hand Damage: 18 To 50 (34 Avg)
Required Level: 72
Durability: 30
Base Weapon Speed: [-10]
(Sorceress Only)
+1-3 To Sorceress Skill Levels (varies)
+40% Faster Cast Rate
+10-20% To Fire Skill Damage (varies)
+10-20% To Lightning Skill Damage (varies)
+20-30 To Energy (varies)
If you find one with +3, 20%, 30, you're fucking lucky, and a killing machine.
BELT
Arachnid Mesh Spiderweb Sash
Defense: 119-138 (varies)(Base Defense: 55-62)
Required Level: 80
Required Strength: 50
Durability: 12
16 Boxes
+90-120% Enhanced Defense (varies)
Slows Target By 10%
+1 To All Skills
+20% Faster Cast Rate
Increases Maximum Mana 5%
Level 3 Venom (11 Charges)
No contest.
Mara's Kaleidoscope Amulet
Required Level: 67
+2 To All Skills
All Resistances +20-30 (varies)
+5 To All Attributes
OR
Rare or Crafted Amulet with FCR, 10-20+% All Res, and +2/3 Fire/Sorc Skills
The only thing that Mara's is missing that can be found elsewhere is a FCR and a higher +skill mod. However, a Crafted or Rare amulet of that type is exceedingly difficult to find.
RINGS
Stone of Jordan Ring
Required Level: 29
+1 To All Skills
Increase Maximum Mana 25%
Adds 1-12 Lightning Damage
+20 To Mana
OR
Rare ring with FCR, Resists, etc...
As Tav pointed out, Sorcs do not generally need life. You will benefit more from increased Mana than Life. The Shako gives you more Life than a BK ring does anyways.
A Rare ring with FCR may mean more damage, since you'll get in more spells of perhaps lesser damage than a slower cast rate of higher damage spells.
But the choice is yours. You don't need to hit the 200% breakpoint, but it's a lovely thing when you do.
SHIELD
Spirit
+2 To All Skills
+25-35% Faster Cast Rate (varies)
+55% Faster Hit Recovery
+250 Defense Vs. Missile
+22 To Vitality
+89-112 To Mana (varies)
Cold Resist +35%
Lightning Resist +35%
Poison Resist +35%
+3-8 Magic Absorb (varies)
Attacker Takes Damage of 14
You need one with +35% FCR. NEED.
ARMOUR
Chains of Honour
+2 To All Skills
+200% Damage To Demons
+100% Damage To Undead
8% Life Stolen Per Hit
+70% Enhanced Defense
+20 To Strength
Replenish Life +7
All Resistances +65
Damage Reduced By 8%
25% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items
OR
Ormus' Robes Dusk Shroud
Defense: 371-487 (varies)(Base Defense: 361-467)
Required Level: 75
Required Strength: 77
Durability: 20
+10-20 Defense (varies)
+20% Faster Cast Rate
+10-15% To Cold Skill Damage (varies)
+10-15% To Fire Skill Damage (varies)
+10-15% To Lightning Skill Damage (varies)
+3 bonus to a random Sorceress skill (Sorceress Only)*
Regenerate Mana 10-15% (varies)
OR
Skin of the Vipermagi Serpentskin Armor
+120% Enhanced Defense
+1 To All Skills
30% Faster Cast Rate
Magic Damage Reduced By 9-13 (varies)
All Resistances +20-35 (varies)
Ormus' Robes is better than CoH, but only if it has the correct attributes, which is completely variable and up to an insane amount of chance. CoH is much more secure, offers more defense and resists, and is not given to random skills and variables.
Skin of the Vipermagi is a nice armour for sorcs if they are poor, or can afford sacrificing skills and defense for FCR.
BOOTS
Whatever is needed to cover your weak spots (resists, Life, Mana, etc)
The only boots with FCR and resists are... well, they are only rare drops, and they are only fairy tales in all reality.
GLOVES
Magefist Light Gauntlets
Defense: 24-25 (varies)(Base Defense: 9-11)
Required Level: 23
Required Strength: 45
Durability: 18
+20-30% Enhanced Defense (varies)
+10 Defense
+1 To Fire Skills
+20% Faster Cast Rate
Regenerate Mana 25%
Adds 1-6 Fire Damage
Alternatively, a rare set of gloves with +2 Sorc/Fire skills, FCR would be best, but again, such rare items are nigh impossible to find.
At least with this pair of gloves, it's always going to grant you bonuses that you - being a Fire Sorc - can definitely use.
The only thing it's missing is resists/life/defense.
Any Vita/Serpent's Charms, FHR small charms, Shimmering charms, Fire Skillers, etc..
SWITCH
Call to Arms and a Spirit Shield
5 Socket Melee Weapons (Use a flail) *Thanks Tav
+1 To All Skills
+40% Increased Attack Speed
+250-290% Enhanced Damage (varies)
Adds 5-30 Fire Damage
7% Life Stolen Per Hit
+2-6 To Battle Command (varies)
+1-6 To Battle Orders (varies)
+1-4 To Battle Cry (varies)
Prevent Monster Heal
Replenish Life +12
30% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items
This makes living in Hell much, much easier, as it grants you and your merc a very large increase in Life and Mana.
Use a crap/any Spirit with the CtA, as you only want the Spirit for the +2 All Skills bonus.
MERC
Infinity/Insight
Fort/CoH
Dream/Delirium/Andy's/Vampire Gaze
Freeze Aura (Nightmare - Defensive)
You need crowd control. Slowing enemies down with a Holy Freeze aura and having a chance to cast Confuse/Mindblast is one of the best methods of doing so. Additionally, having a pulsing damage aura will cause the enemy to initially engage the merc, not you.
With this list, you could end up with quite a number of skills and bonuses to various attributes, but you haven't hit the high FHR or FCR breakpoint. However, you do have a lot of skills, and plenty of resists to survive almost without worry.
But this is only my opinion. I hope it helps.

I have a +2, +17% Lightning. Not quite the +3, but still better than Hoto is. High runes are Um only if the person wants them. Otherwise, disregard it. A good Eschuta's goes for 5 or more.
Nom, I think he's making a Lightning Sorceress. Also, I think Mulley may have an Ormus' Robes that I gave him. The +skills is on Telekinesis, but it's still got +percent damage. Also, CtA is a 5Os Runeword, not 4Os.
Mercs don't need CoH. Their resistance is already high enough with Fortitude. Your merc, however, will benefit the most from Infinity, not Insight as is the case with most spellcasters. This is because all enemies with Lightning Immunity can have it broken in Diablo II, and those enemies with Immunity are not often, either.
Also, his belt and gloves should play the same function as his boots, unless he has Arach's, simply because this is both a popular item, but it has a low supply. However, most will go with Magefist or Teang Oul's for the FCR and resistance on Trang.
Charms should cover whatever it is that you lack, or mass Lightning skillers.

I agree with Tav's opinion of Mercs: use an Infinity rather than an Insight.
You can always quaff potions when your Mana gets low, whereas you can't do much about Fire Immunes other than, well, flee or for sad amounts of Lightning damage. Also, your merc is then granted crushing blow (40%).
And I also agree with using Fort rather than CoH. Fort offers damage, but most importantly, high defense and a chance to cast Chilling Armor.
I personally like the Delirium helm for mercs most, as the chance to cast Confuse and Mindblast is rather beneficial, made even more so by the +2 All Skills mod, which raises the merc's aura.
It also offers high defense bonuses.
The only thing it is missing is Life leech.

04-24-2007, 11:43 PM
Hmmmm...maybe I should go for an infinity. Once I break immunity, do I get full amount of Res Lowering, or does it remain at 1/5 of total amount?
Tavrobel
04-24-2007, 11:57 PM
Magefists offers increased Mana regeneration, which should speed up, ever so slightly your mana regen.
What is unfortunate about -enemy resistance is that the hit only applies to the mercenary. 55% would help, but once you have 50k Lightning, that's not much of a problem.
Lifesteal shouldn't be too much a problem, especially because with a pure Lightning Sorceress, everything except Ubers will be dead by the time they get onscreen. If you've got a good Smiter helping you out, everything will be dead.
As for a character revamp, it shouldn't be too hard to find what you need, seeing as we are all one big family here, we should have, if not optimal, sufficient equipment.
Once immunity is broekn, then the remaning minus resistance works at 1/5 capacitiy. For example, if I had -150% Lightning resistance, and an enemy has 130% Lightning resistance, it would chop off 30 to bring it below 100%, then the remaning -120% would be divided by five, 24%, and subtracted from 100%, leaving your total resistance at 76%.
But once your damage exceeds 10k (which is possible even with base skills), that's 25% of 4 to ~10000, 1 to ~2500 per shot, at 2 shots per second, for 4 seconds on a typical enemy. An average comes out to 1250*2*4. An impressive amount, even for Final Fantasy standards, but as we know, Diablo characters would own Final Fantasy, even on their own system. Frenzy wins Sephiroth. It's been proven.

What would you say is the most insane build?
This can be in terms of finding correct items, dmg output, tanking abilities, how much of an irony or oxymoron the build is on paper, etc...
Tavrobel
04-25-2007, 01:07 AM
Blessed Hammers, actually. The only thing that might surpass it in pure damage is a Frenzy Barbarian with Axes, or a Smiter because of stunlock.
With level 20 Hammers, synergies, and Concentrate, the damage is instantly boosted to 10k, minimum and maximum. If you got Offensive Aura Grand Charms, the damage would go upwards of 30k. Skill equipment could easily get it to 40k, and unlike elementals, they ignore defenses (if not deal extra) of Demons and Undead, and are fallible only to Magic-Immune animals (anything not a demon or undead).
BtV claims that Concentrater Barbarians are nigh unkillable.
Each of the elemental Sorceresses have their own style of ownage. Fire can attack extremely fast, Lightning does the most damage to the most enemies, and Cold is very easy to use.
Dragoons bring FF and DII together, and as we all know, FF fails to DII. However, in dueling, Dragoons are very effective with their Knockback from Leap.
Whirlwind received over 10 nerfs since its inception, and is still a very popular build.
Corpse Explosion used to be rigged, and it still is.
Trap Assassins are newbie, since you lay down some traps and wait for a bunch of dead enemies. Go bake a cake, look after some children, burn your hand and get rushed to the hospital, come back, and you're standing in a fire doing 5 damage a second, and you're somehow, still alive. If only this worked in real life.
Necromancers are kind of meh, but Summoners do uber-lag, which is a gift in and of itself. The gift of EXP loss.
Druids win you. End of discussion. Shapeshift. Wind. Summoning.
Strafers are like Barbarians, but are ranged, and kind of suck. But they are blonde, and we all know that blondes have more fun. Their Valkyrie cohorts usually go somewhere and do something. They also get Lightning Strike Amazons, which are like Lightning Sorceresses.
There are some non-conventional builds, such as Singing Barbarians, Golem Necromancers, Melee-sins, Charger Paladins (dueling), Vengeance Paladins (no longer viable past Nightmare), Energy Shield Sorceresses, Hydra Sorceresses, Fire Druids, Elemental Amazons, and many more!

Hammers

Blessed Aim
Holy Shield (as far as possible)
Defiance (optional)
Your equpment should focus around +skills for Paladin skills. The usual, really. Enigma, Shako, FCR rings, Amulet, Boots, Gloves, Belt, and all of that good stuff.

I am going to redo my Aura-based Summoning Necromancer. I believe it would be best if my Mercenary held an Infinity polearm, rather than a pride one. Instead, I plan to do something terribly risky:
Make a Pride Iron Golem.
The risks are terribly great, as pride is NOT a cheap runeword. If I or my Iron Golem perish, my Pride weapon will melt away...
According to the Necromancer Pet Calculator (http://tph.tuwien.ac.at/~gottwald/necro_pet_calculator.html), I ought to be able to summon an Iron Golem with around 9.8k base life in Hell mode at around clvl 80 (giving me enough points to max Golem Mastery, and place a point in Summon Resist). Truly, I won't see any real use of a Pride Iron Golem until this stage of the game, so I believe it ought to work relatively well.
Before, I've only used Iggy as an Insight fount, and he didn't last very long as I had chosen to initially try a Fire Golem set up instead. But I believe a much more focused approach would give me a very stable, strong Iron Golem.
Due to his low damage attacks, he shouldn't kill himself instantly when under the effects of Iron Maiden (Unlike my damn merc...). Iggy also has a natural resistance of 50 Lightning and 100 poison, which will prove most beneficial when dealing with Lightning Enchanted monsters such as Scarabs, or when facing the infamous Black Souls.
Really, my only concern after pumping points into Golem Mastery ought to be how I am going to keep myself alive. There are many left over Skill Points when building a Summoner Necromancer, so I am thinking of placing 1 point in Bone Armour and the rest in its respective synergies. At around clvl 80, I ought to be around the 500 damage absorb mark.
This may fall flat on it face and I will be one precious Pride runeword less, but there is too much of an allure in having Conviction AND Concentration at work. My Skeletons will kill faster as they hit 50% more often, and have a lovely boost in damage output from the wandering Pride Iron Golem, and my Corpse Explosion will receive the bonuses of Conviction as well (since half of its damage is Fire based).
I guess we'll see how it works.
NOTE: I've recently discovered that summoned minions will keep the stats that they are granted from whatever items they were initially summoned with. This means that if I use King Leoric's Arm and Spirit/Homo to summon minions and then switch to my Beast and Spirit/Homo set-up, the skeletons will still benefit from the +Skeleton Mastery and other bonuses found on the wand. Same can be said of any item. It seems that although I may lose the amount of skeletons, their damage, AR, and life stats remain.
I simply found this interesting, and suspect it's also true for Druid Summoners, and perhaps even the Amazon's Valkyrie and Assassins Shadow Summons benefit from similar effects.

Those Runes were all yours. Go for it. Assuming that Polearms, runeword or not, can be converted to a Iron Golem. Be prepared to be make very fast Exits from the game.
Also, beforewarned that Iron Golems do not take every property of an item, for example, Iron Golems are not invincible when the Indestructible mod is found on an item. I do not believe that Iron Golems take Auras, either, but I could be wrong.

I have tested it, and they do in fact take on the properties of auras. Whether or not it will receive the other bonuses on the Pride runeword or not is up in the air, but from making an Insight Iron Golem once before, it does make a minion with an aura.
I have heard rumour of Iron Golems just simply vanishing for no apparent reason between games, which is something that puts me on edge.

Of course, but on one occasion that I recall quite vividly, myself and a few others were PK'd abruptly. Those who were also slain were quite confused, as there seemed to have been no Hostile message.
However, this has only occurred on one single instance. Those who PK often display certain tendencies anyways, so if I simply remember to remain observant, I ought to be fine - for the most part.
Usually it would be simply annoying to be PK'd, but now it would be tragic.

LOL a duped Homo. That's quite new, actually.
Anyways, as we all know, +3 Trap skills on an Assassin claw are the best type of weapon for a character. As such, make sure everyone keeps an eye out for these. +Skills claws also work.
I've been largely absent due to me playing Median alot more recently, so if you're ever on, let me know.

I should hope so, otherwise, I will have 6 accounts worth of stuff to be expired.
That's not a good thing, especially since the oldest two have been around since 2003 and 2004, respectively.

How's Median? I've been playing FFXI lately, but that game is getting boring again, and I'm still on my free trial, so I may just delete it and forget about it for the 20th(?) time. Is median updated at all?
Tavrobel
05-04-2007, 08:20 PM
It recently received two updates, 1.50 and 1.51. It's getting nice, as I received a large number of higher level runes from Maxx Power. My Elemental Druid is capable of dealing close to 10k with all of his elemental attacks (except Poison), and can kill effectively on [/players 8].
No major spellcaster uniques, though, I did find a Sacred level throwing axe. It seems like runewords are the way to go, and I'm almost ready to choose an uberskill, but I haven't touched Median in the last week, and Maxx has largely been occupied elsewhere.
EDIT: By the way, have I been owning for the last week, or what? Epic gains in the Elections, high grades in my Spanish and History classes (Honors III and AP US)! And I just recently owned this poor, unfortunate newb, not once, but twice!
OMG!!!!! Tavvy's a Nazi!!!....no surprise's there.

Tavrobel, people have the right to put whatever they f****** want in their sig, heck, I could diss you for constantly putting people down when they have an opinion, or blatently braging about how "awesome" you are, calling people n00bs just because they're not as good as you, well, people who call people n00bs, are n00bs and I know a great place where you and your followers can go, i've been there and some people there are exactly like you....trolls....

A) I am that awesome
B) you really need to learn the difference between comedy and actual insult, and not really, since what you call a "diss" requires that you inform someone of something that they do not already know, and a "burn" requires that you make a successful attempt at humor; I have done so, and you have not, and to be able to diss someone, you must have some form of superiority, and yet, I see no proof of yours anywhere
C) GameFAQs is uncultured, while I am; ever called of someone named Carl Jung? You should read up on him, he's quite fascinating, but of course, I won't ever have to worry about you coming out of the cave (read up on Aristotle, too, he's also a good friend of mine)
D) have you ever played an RPG before? A single button? LOL!
E) of course it needed to be said; however, just because you say it, doesn't mean it will amount to anything
F) of course I'm arrogant and condescending, it's what I do
G) you still are a n00b, but I'll overlook it because you have newb tendencies
H) YTMND
