After seeing a lot of success in Japan, SquareEnix announced via Facebook yesterday that Theatrhythm Final Fantasy would be released in North America, Europe, and PAL territories this summer. A more specific release date has not been announced.
Theatrhythm is a rhythm game for 3DS featuring music and characters from all of the Final Fantasy games. It was the third highest selling game in Japan the week it was released, and has been praised by famous game composer Nobuo Uematsu.
Meanwhile, Japan just released its third set of DLC for the game. Here's the trailer:
I don't disagree with you. Except about the rhythm game part; it looks cute and has gotten good reviews. I would feel like a jackass buying a 3DS when I already have a DS Lite though.

That's like saying you'd feel like a jackass buying a PS3 because you already have a PS2.
I was kinda disappointed the gameplay was wholly touchscreen based (at least in the demo I played), and it seemed that what you did compared to what the prompts were was simplified-- there are four characters on screen and I guess you can equip them with stuff, but you tap the same way for all characters. I was tapping higher and lower on teh touchscreen based on where the prompts came up, but it didn't seem to actually affect anything if you were in what I figured would be a wrong spot.
it seems like a bad mixture though, mixing rpg style fighting with rhythm games; it'd have been more fun if the characters were rocking out or moving around, but I guess that takes more money to animate.
