Square-Enix is still churning out some great videos showing off the 3D remake for the SNES classic Secret of Mana. Today, they revealed the new opening/prologue video which depicts the battle between the Mana Beasts and the Mana Fortress.
Secret of Mana will be available on February 15th 2018 for PS4, PSVita, and Steam.
This is actually one of the few games I'm kind of excited for that's coming out in the near future. Not only is SoM one of my favorite Square games but if this game does well enough, they'll give Seiken Densetsu 3 the same treatment and it would be nice to have the one major missing entry finally get a Western release. Besides, Mana is a great franchise and I want to support it.
I don't imagine enjoying this game, which saddens me. I watched the opening ten minutes and it looks like a lot of shortcuts were taken. Something about the animations look off, they don't look enough like an homage to the original and they don't look fluid enough to be an updated style. It looks like a low budget indie. The music was almost too similar to the SNES midi sampling, you'd think they'd resample it or orchestrate it brand new. The English voice acting was pure cringe, which can grow on you I suppose, but I have my doubts they were purposely trying to sound like 80s dubbed anime. And I will never be okay with that lazy plain and boring iPad interface and text style they keep on using from Setsuna and Lost Sphere. The text boxes should have more soul. Choose a font with character, give a thick border around the boxes. I dunno. The whole thing rubbed me wrong and I think a fan game could be made better. I was also disappointed by the Lost Sphere demo showcases for similar reasons. But I will probably buy this to support development of future projects
