    To follow up on an earlier story, it appears as though one of the major problems Final Fantasy XI has been experiencing as of late has been determined. Sony has recently released information which states that Final Fantasy XI is incompatible with certain unspecified models of the PS2 console. In these cases, an error message prevents booting and the game fails to load. Players with this type of problem are asked to contact Sony, but it is unknown whether this is to fix the problem or merely to allow Sony to collect information on it.

    This incompatibility with PlayStation2 models is one of several technical difficulties that have stymied the operation of Final Fantasy XI since its release. Another difficulty that prospective FFXI players have encountered is the unavailability of PlayStation2 hard drives. These products have become so hard to find that many players have been forced to look to internet service providers who happen to carry them.     Squaresoft's annual earnings report included information on the titles it plans to release in Japan during the next fiscal year. While details are scarce, the report included information that Squaresoft is going to release two RPG's and an action-style game for the PS2, as well as two titles for Game Boy Advance, once of which will be Final Fantasy Tactics. In total, Square expects to ship 3.6 million copies of its new software next year.

    Since talk began of Squaresoft's fist venture into the online gaming forum, RPG players everywhere have eagerly anticipated the release of Final Fantasy XI. However, this may prove to be one of the fist times that Square, a leader in the RPG industry, fails to live up to expectations. Apparently, Square's underestimation of the level of interest in their title has led to their PlayOnline server being overwhelmed with players. Also, the billing company used by Square was unable to process the flood of registrations. Even the website for PlayOnline experienced technical difficulties with this massive influx of players, rendering support services unable to accomodate the legions of upset FFXI'ers.

    Squaresoft has since determined one of the major causes for the server problems is faulty registration codes, which accompany each copy of Final Fantasy XI individually. Consequently, those with copies of Final Fantasy XI that have an invalid registration code will be unable to access PlayOnline, and FFXI, until the problem is fixed. Moreover, ...
