The popular manga magazine, Shonen Jump, has released some interesting new information on Square Enix's Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus in their most recent issue. New details surfaced include character names and backstory, and a little insight on a possible multiplayer mode.

The character, Reeve, while known to have a part in the game for some time, gets a role in the Dirge of Cerberus storyline in the latest Jump. He is now described as the leader of an organization, called "WRO," whose main goal is to rebuild the planet. Fans who have been watching the trailers will undoubtedly know of a certain muscleheaded lout who uses an enormous gun as his weapon of choice. He has now been given a name, "Asul," and some background information of his own: he's a member of an organization called Deep Ground, or "DG," where he fills his role as an elite Soldier. Finally, the Jump article offered some pictures of a new character dressed in ninja attire, who wielded a large shuriken most Square fans will recognize.

For the second straight year, Square Enix will showcase Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children at the Venice Film Festival in the digital movie category. Unlike its previous showing, however, the completed film will be displayed instead of the edited version of last year's festival. The event begins on August 31st and continues until the 10th of September, which means that it may be at Venice that the movie's creators choose to show the completed film to the public for the first time.

Square Enix has plans to release the film on the UMD disc playable by Sony's Playstation Portable (PSP) handheld, in addition to the standard DVD format. The official release date still lies on September 14 in Japan, and prices for both the UMD and DVD versions are listed as 4,800 Yen (roughly $43 US), while the limited Special Edition DVD will cost fans an astounding 29,500 Yen (roughly $275 US). See here for more information on the Special Edition DVD and all that it entails.

Oddly, the DVD version of Advent Children is set to arrive on September 14 in the U.S., the same day as ...

After months without much news on Square Enix's upcoming title Final Fantasy XII, the company has released some new information regarding one of the game's prominent characters and two new summon creatures. The newly named character, Vayne Kaldas Soridor, pictured here, is the heir of the Emperor of Arcadia, Gramis. Though he's only 27, Vayne is the leader of the Judges and the crown prince of Arcadia, and, despite his lofty position, is still down-to-earth and cares for the common citizens of his empire. Square Enix has yet to disclose whether or not Vayne will be a playable character.

The two summon creatures Square Enix have revealed are the fire summon Berias and the earth summon Hashmarim. The names are remarkably similar to demons from Squaresoft's Final Fantasy Tactics, which first introduced gamers to the world of Ivalice that has since been featured in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and is the setting for Final Fantasy XII.

Square Enix has finally put something more suitable on it's Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus website. Before it was just a splash page. Now the website contains character bios for Vincent and Cait Sith, three wallpapers, and an information section for the game's release and development team.

While the character bios don't reveal any new information for Vincent, Cait Sith's bio gives us a little insight into what Reeve has been up to since the defeat of Sephiroth. Check out the official website here.

FFVII: DC is tentatively scheduled for a release in late 2005 in Japan.

It's certainly not the Highwind, but Square-Enix has recently released the first artwork for the airship to be featured in the higly anticipated release of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. Aptly named the Sierra, it was seen briefly in the E3 trailer for the film, but you can find a couple pages worth of design here.

And for good measure, the page also reveals collectible action figures based on the character's from the movie. Yes, even you can do crazy acrobatics with Tifa now.

Last year Square showed of Final Fantasy XII in playable form. Now, a year later, Square is only displaying clips of the game. It was no where to be found in playable form. This comes as rather disappointing news to fans that have already seen the release pushed farther and farther back. Square-Enix responded to IGN with the following:

"Last year, we wanted to show off the fact that Final Fantasy XII's gameplay would be completely different from past installments. This year, however, we're wanted to take the extra time necessary to work on the cinematics, fine-tune the mechanics we hinted at last year, and really make the product strong before we show it again."

I truly feel that Square-Enix, once the leader in the market of videogame sales (next to Electronic Arts) really need to get their act together if they want to remain the strong force that they once were. It has no been about 3 and 1/2 years since Square put out Final Fantasy X, that last "true" Final Fantasy. I, like many, am getting a bit tired of the delays.
