Recently, we reported on a Q&A session with Producer Naoki Yoshida about Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, where he stated that the max gil allowed would be reduced to 10% of the current value (999,999,999 to 99,999,999). Well, it turns out it’s more complicated than that, and Yoshida has issued a clarification on the FFXIV forums.

It turns out that basically all gil is being reduced to 10% of its current value. This includes the prices of NPC goods, how much NPCs will pay for your items, the amount of gil received as loot and rewards, and, most significantly, the amount of gil currently in players’ possession. If you have 1,000,000 gil in the bank, when ARR is released you will no longer be a millionaire.

Apparently this major change is, in large part, an attempt to “rectify the increase in cost of items relative to the price of arrows, since archers in A Realm Reborn will no longer need arrows.” All archers will now apparently come with a Time Lord quiver that holds an infinite number of arrows.

Yoshida tried to assuage all ...

Have you ever played a Final Fantasy game and thought that it would make a pretty great book? Well dream no longer folks, because the first three Final Fantasy games look like they're set for novelization.

I wonder if the Invisible Lady will be featured...

This is a perfect opportunity for Square Enix's writing team to flex their creative muscles. FFI has long been the subject of entertaining Let's Plays, mostly due to its lack of characterisation and paperthin plot. With a novelization, Square Enix can stand to build upon the first gem in their crown and give us a somewhat familiar tale to enjoy. Let's not forget how good FFII and FFIII were either, though!

Square Enix has a habit of relegating these kinds of things to Japan-only, but here's hoping they make an appearance for Western audiences soon. In the mean time, better start asking your translator friends for some help!

To complement the giant box set of every game in the series, it looks like Square Enix will also be releasing new Ultimania guides for the series. It's reported that these Ultimania guides will feature even more rare and obscure information than the previous ones, including some never before seen art.

Square Enix plan to release three compilations; the first one covers the Nintendo era titles, the second covers the PS1 titles and the last book covers FFX-FFXIV. They'll set you back about ¥3,255 each ($42|£26|€32).

Belt it out for a spot in a Square Enix game!

Square Enix are holding auditions for a spot in an unspecified upcoming title. The first round requires hopefuls to sing a cover of one of five The World Ends With You songs though, so here's hoping it's that sequel we're all wanting!

If you can read Japanese then check out the official Square Enix page yourself. Otherwise, just get your recordings done by September 24 and fire them off to Square yourself! Good luck~

Square Enix responded to some simple questions about the Final Fantasy X HD remake with some pretty shady responses. When asked for updates on the progress of the game - announced over a year ago now - the response was that corporate stonewall: "Thanks for your inquiry. We have no information on Final Fantasy X HD to share at this time."

Will we ever see Tidus and friends in glorious HD?

So the guys at PSU decided to try an easier question: is it still in development?

"Again, we have no information we can share at this time. Sorry," was the response from Square Enix. Definitely not comforting news. Hopefully some solid details on FFX HD are released soon! ...

It seems as though Square Enix has been hanging around with Sony too much and believes their online store has been hacked. Attempting to reach any one of their online stores brings up a notice which explains the concerns.

Sounds like Square Enix need to get a few Judges to guard their online store.

The statement from SE says that the company is investigating the matter to see if any personal data was compromised. Apparently the concern is mostly over the US side of things. The hacked server contains non-financial data like names, mailing addresses and phone numbers, but didn't have contain credit card info. Keep tabs on your credit cards anyway is SE's advice.

“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused by the suspension of the Square Enix Online Shop,” the company stated. “We take data security extremely seriously and we regret any inconvenience this may have caused our customers and fans. ...

Square Enix continues their portable push with another iOS (and this time Android too!) game called Demons' Score. You might have guessed from the title that it is heavily based on music - in fact, it's quite a hectic looking rhythm game with a decent amount of action. Square Enix have released the opening video and a little tutorial video. Don't try and tap your computer screen though, I already tried it and it doesn't work!

We're being treated to quite a show here. For arguably such a minor game, Square Enix have assembled an impressive team. The composers - who are really the most important feature of a musical kind of game - include Yoko Shimomura (Kingdom Hearts), Keiichi Okabe (Nier/Tekken), ZUNTATA (Groove Coaster), Naoshi Mizuta (Final Fantasy XI), Ryo Yamazaki (Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers), and Kohei Tanaka (Sakura Wars), with more rumoured to be on the way. Not bad at all, I must say! If you're a fan of games like Elite Beat Agents then this might just be up your ...

My iPod Touch is unfortunately too old to try this out, but if you have an iOS device that can run firmware version 4.2 or higher, you can get this game for free. To quote Square Enix regarding the production talent:

The Guardian Cross development team includes top-notch talent from the FINAL FANTASY series, including Hiroyuki Ito, creator of the Active Time Battle (ATB) system.

    - Original Concept: Hiroyuki Ito (FINAL FANTASY IV, V, VI, VIII, IX, XII, FFT and more)
    - Composer: Naoshi Mizuta (FINAL FANTASY X-2, FINAL FANTASY XI)
    - Character Design: Akira Oguro (FINAL FANTASY IV: The After Years, FINAL FANTASY Dimensions)
This card battle game is made to be free to play from beginning to end, but they intend to introduce premium paid content for it as well.

An aetheryte camp that now costs no anima to visit

This is a smaller Final Fantasy XIV patch, but it all builds up! A lot of this patch focused on the dangerous creature, Atomos. It appears in the following new areas:

    • Dragonhead, Coerthas Central Highlands
    • Emerald Moss, North Shroud
    • Crimson Bark, West Shroud
    • Black Brush, Central Thanalan
    • Horizon, Western Thanalan

Additionally, teleporting to certain aetheryte camps (which is where Atomos appears) no longer costs anima. Atomos is said to now behave differently at these locations, but the patch notes are not clear how. You’ll just have to find out! Anyway, the camps are:

    • Camp Brittlebark, Mor Dhona
    • Camp Revenant's Toll, Mor Dhona
    • Camp Ever Lakes, Coerthas Central Lowlands
    • Camp Glory, Coerthas Eastern Lowlands
    • Camp Bluefog, Northern Thanalan

Some general new stuff has been added, as well, which the patch notes do not specify, such as new monsters and weather conditions have been added (I personally want ...

The dynamic duo of Biggs and Wedge. Everyone has heard of them from the great mind of George Lucas in the original Star Wars film, and the pair has since made small appearances or cameos in the Final Fantasy series. There will be several installments of their great misadventures throughout Final Fantasy. Their first such appearance was in Final Fantasy VI, even though Biggs was originally mistranslated into Vicks.

What were they doing then? Why, they were in the opening scenes of the game, of course! They were assisting the lead character, Terra Branford, in a raid on the town of Narshe as soldiers of the Gestahlian Empire. They were sent there to carry out the investigation of a frozen Esper discovered by local miners. With Terra coming along, it was assumed that the rumors of the Esper was being taken seriously, and who wouldn't want to come unprepared?

However, the Narshe Mines were being well protected by Narshe's guards. Biggs and Wedge, while being led by Terra, fought through the guards with quite ease to reach the new ...

Final Fantasy Versus XIII Delays Inspire Fan Protest

So after years of little info, quick updates about future updates, rumors of being upgraded to being FFXV, and even rumors of the game being canceled, fans have started a petition to get SE to be transparent about the production of FF Versus XIII.

While the success of an online petition is rare, the most recent and notable exception being that of the Dark Souls petition that led to a DLC and PC port, this is another example of fans being upset with SE's curious PR campaign for the missing Versus XIII. Square has only released three videos, a few pictures, and name dropped about two characters and have given the most vague idea of what the game is about and how it plays. The title has been a no show for every major gaming expo and Squenix event since 2010. The game has been in development since 2006 and still has no release window. It entered full production last year.
