It's not the planet, although the sun is one of the three sources of illumination.

The temple of the ancients? OH I THINK I GOT IT!!!! The waterfall! Right, is it the waterfall? The one where whatsherface (vincent's sweetie) is?

Thrice illuminated
Solar and cruxiform
It covers but hides
No great secrets

so it is something that:
- is lit by 3 sources fo light
- is "solar" maybe its another source of light, or maybe a cosmic entity
- is cross shaped
- and hides something that everyone knows about

i want to say it has something to do with safer sephiroths giant move thing where he destroys the planets (can't remember the name :D) but it's probably wrong

Solar and cruxiform

"Thrice illuminated", no bloody idea.
"Solar and cruxiform" Well, some sort of magnitude power. Dunno.
At least, "It covers but hides", could be that "It" protects something, but remains hidden.
"No great secrets", everybody knows about it. No big secret.

The Golden Saucer?

Illuminated by the sun in the desert, fireworks and... um, lights?
Solar = Golden (pehaps?) and kind of coss-shaped (ish).
It covers the ruins of Old Corel, now a prison. I wouldn't call that secret paticularly "great", would you? :p

BG-57
03-01-2007, 12:25 PM
Not the Lifestream, Ancients, Don Corneo's room, the Forgotten City altar, or Gold Saucer.

The three sources of illumination are three different things.

BG-57

Lost Number
03-10-2007, 02:12 PM
The location is evidently the surface, and probably not Midgar. I know that much. I'm guessing the two sources of illumination to probably be magic and electric lights.

03-11-2007, 02:31 PM
Yes, it's a surface location that isn't Midgar.

No to all.

...Makes me think of a rug or carpet in a room. There could be, for instance, sunlight streaming in through a window, with candlelight and some form of electric light both inside the room. And the rug/carpet would simply cover the floor.

That's not a guess, obviously--just an idea to get thoughts churning.

oh yeah im thinking of this town where cloud and party stay at and find a materia on the floor of the inn......... damn im bad with towns lol i really got to play again >.<

Weimar Pluto Knight VII
03-16-2007, 11:31 AM
I thought about practically every single Inn in the whole game, and the only Inn I can think of where that might happen is Icicle Inn. You mean Icicle Inn? A few other inns have Elixirs or the item pack in Aeris's house, but no materia as I recall.

BG-57
03-16-2007, 12:26 PM
The answer is the carpet on the floor next to the wall map at Icicle Inn. It has a pattern that resembles suns and crosses, it is near ceiling lights, sunlight through the window, and a lit fireplace.

The nothing important it covers is simpler than a materia; it is simply a patch of bare floor.

Musenji had the breakthrough in all but name, but Weimar Pluto Knight VII supplied the name. In a case like this I'll just suggest whoever posts first gets to go.

You cheeky git. How do you come up with these riddles?

Usually I just thumb through the strategy guide and latch onto an image, item, monster, or location that inspires me. In this case it was the image of Icicle Inn. Originally I had planned to make it about the wall map, but the pattern on the carpet grabbed my attention. :p

Although I freely admit that there was a comment that influenced me:

Those are fun to make, but are getting too common so they aren't hard anymore.

(I did think of icicle town, with the image of sunlight streaming through a window, and also thought of the idea of a fireplace instead of candlelight...)

Okay, so here:

:D I, too, go through numerous walkthroughs I randomly find for inspration. The long lists of monsters, enemy skills, materia, armor, and weapons are of great use (which is how I came up with the 'Cloud's Swords' riddle. Notice they were listed in alphabetical order?)

Although I freely admit that there was a comment that influenced me:

As for the current riddle:

What kind of science project are we looking at here? Volcano? Magnets? Grass? Let me narrow it down: Geology, Physics, Biology, Astronomy. Which category would it belong to?

musenji
03-21-2007, 02:43 AM
Well, I did say saturation unto a string, which is literally what the project consists of. It's chemistry.

Dragon Mage
03-21-2007, 03:15 AM
Osmosis involved here? lol, sorry, but I'm drawing a blank. Chemistry; now I'm thinking of potions, elixers, something along that line. Hero drink. But this is just pondering aloud.

musenji
03-21-2007, 04:21 AM
The experiment involves the use of water, but has nothing to do with osmosis. That's all I'll say for a bit. Otherwise, maybe think about the other lines too.

Timster
03-21-2007, 03:05 PM
the only science project that comes to mind is that you evaporate water so that crystals are formed, if you have a string in a glass of water containing, say, ordinary salt or sugar (the salt is dissolved in the water), when the water evaporates, the crystals form on the string instead...

so the only thing that comes to mind as an answer would be materia, with it's refining process and all that... although i'm probably waaay off...

But i'm studying a science-program in school so that's why i know of different experiments... if that one's wrong then i'll probably think of another one... HEHE :D

DeStyle
03-21-2007, 04:01 PM
Timster I think you mean an experiment in which
you make a saturated solution of one compound (CuSO4,
copper sulphate, because it's pretty :P) and in that
solution you hang a cristal of that compound (copper sulphate).
Then you leave it alonoe and wait for the compound to come
out of it's solution, it will then bind to the already present
crystal of the compound.

The proces is called crystalliztion. So I guess the riddle has
to do something with those materia crystals.

Lost Number
03-21-2007, 07:25 PM
Its allowed, definitly, and i've made chemistry references before in my riddles (no one got it).
As for WHAT the answer is, saturation of a string...well, most of us know what saturation is, but in crystalisation, it is definitly not the string is saturated. The solution is saturated (works better if its heated too), not the string. So I honestly cannot think of any chemistry experiment (and i've done a few) that fits this description. The thing that hits me here is "rightfully gain copper". This could indeed refer to the pretty blue copper sulphate, but you dont gain copper - you gain a copper salt. A possible alternative is that it refers to a piece of copper equipment, and the crystals might be some of the many strange articles seen in the game which may be crystals.

Timster
03-21-2007, 07:45 PM
yeah i meant like crystallization but i know the experiment you're talking of (did it like 2-3 weeks ago actually, isn't it nice when you're in a science program:D, experiments and all that...btw the pretty thing is because it's blue crystals instead of white:p) and thats not the one i'm refferring to, mine is ALOT simpler (at least the chemistry behind the experiment)

but anyway, back to the subject... it says in the riddle saturation UNTO a string... meaning the string wasn't saturated in the beginning, the sat. is added, hence my choice for example experiment, when the water evaporates, the salt simply moves on to the string, because it breaks the structure of the water (aaw man i don't know what it's called in english!), it's a difference in environment sort of...

maybe like the refinging process of mako creating materia, hence my guess, materia

Lost Number
03-21-2007, 10:23 PM
The experiment, I know what you mean, is indeed crystalisation, and the reason it forms is because the salt which cannot be held in solution any longer solidifies in groups - crystals. I suppose now it makes sense.

Light Mage
03-21-2007, 11:01 PM

The Mako condensing machinery at Nibelheim Reactor?

musenji
03-21-2007, 11:19 PM
The answer isn't materia or a mako reactor (or part of a mako reactor).

Yep, I was referring to the project where you mix sugar in boiling water to the point of saturation, then let the water cool, and crystals form on the string. Didn't occur to me that you could do it with salt too...usually kids would opt for sugar so that they could eat the crystals, but sugar vs. salt isn't the important thing.

Dragon Mage

I want to say icecicles. i don't rightly know why. Otherwise, I would've guessed the whole 'thing' of mako that sephiroth was in when Cloud gave him materia of doomy-death. But that's not it, becuase the answer has nothing to do with mako. Crap. Is this a process or an object? Something you do?

musenji
03-25-2007, 01:42 AM
Not icicles...

There was some important information about the nature of the answer revealed from finding out what the science project was about...at least I thought there was.

Is the second stanza a complete mystery? It's about a different aspect of the answer than the first stanza. "Your new hope" refers to the answer itself. So it's an object.

Another hint: line 7 refers to something engrained in U.S. culture, which is why it's in quotes. I see now that a lot of the regulars are not from the U.S. ..You might still have heard what this refers to.

Ack! Sorry, no, it's not the ice crystal.

Edit: hint: but it IS an item.

Edit 2: hint 2: line 7 refers to an expression involving a penny. hence the copper..

hint 3: "hopper" refers to a garbage hopper, and it's symbolic, not literal.

hint 4: the answer is two words. stanza 1 is about one of the words (and the item's "nature"), and stanza 2 is about the other word (what the item does).

Dragon Mage

musenji
03-27-2007, 02:21 AM
Yep, okay, and here's the breakdown.

Like a simple science project
Saturation unto a string (the sugar crystallization thing)

Or adult’s chalice elect,

chalice = glass,
adult = only for adults, meaning involving alcohol
elect = high-class or high-quality...a crystal wine glass

Is the nature of this thing. (the thing is crystal)

You may spare the hopper,
With your new hope erected, (keep from wasting/"trashing" your time [dying and starting from outside the cave] by having access to this thing)

Or “rightfully gain copper”
When trials are recollected. ("earn" the recollection of your trials by saving them first)

Now I get to think of a riddle...? Okay:

Urn of Heaven, owned by Chelonia
What secrets do you hide?
A song by Madonna, fighting hard
To regain family pride...

musenji
03-27-2007, 04:25 PM
I'm sure I've got it, but I don't want to spoil it for others who would like a chance to solve it. So, here's my answer:

Yuffie hiding in the urn outside Turtle's Paradise?

Heaven = paradise
Chelonia = turtle
Madonna = noble or important woman

Yuffie is stealing the materia to return her family pride, and she hides in the urn outside "Chelonia's Heaven"

...maybe the song refers to a noise she makes from inside the urn?

not to be a partypooper and spoil all the fun for you but you will have the admins and knights after you so i'd suggest moving on to the help forum or PM eachother, or even me i'll be glad to help, especially about sigs, but you shouldn't post such things here. so PM instead of posting here...

And hi Eagleheart, if you want to introduce yourself, you can make a "newbie thread" as they're called in the general chat forum

and btw this is just an advice...because if you continue you probably WILL be warned by admins or others... and you probably wouldn't like that...

EDIT: BTW nice guess musenji, i think you got it and you beat me to it too ;)... well you snooze you loose, i guess...

Eagleheart

Oh, I don't really plan on introducing myself. I'm Eagleheart, and that's all anybody really ever need know. I just plan on being here and solving riddles and if it should so happen that I can figure out how to get my signature working, that'd be neat, but it's not tremendously necessary and hardly something worth making a thread over.

Yeah. I was joking. I thought it was a bit of a comical situation; you know, how you just seemed to materialize out of nowhere with the answer. mrh?

Urn of Heaven, owned by Chelonia................Chelonia=turtle. Turtle's Paradise
What secrets do you hide?..........................Yuffie's hiding inside
A song by Madonna, fighting hard.................Material Girl
To regain family pride.................................Yuffie, of course.

Now that was easy, probably becuase I listen to oldies music. I had the answer before I saw musenji's post, lol. Now I feel smart/special!!

Yuffie hiding in the urn outside Turtle's Paradise?

That's the correct answer, and it was posted first, although your reasoning is spot on with Madonna's Materia(l) Girl. :D

Yeah, when I saw the real meaning...well, I didn't slap my forehead, but it made me think "good heavens, when he said 'a song by Madonna' he meant a song by Madonna." Awesome usage.

I'll have one up in roughly 10 hours. I have to sleep!

...Mmkay, here. This was a joint effort between Eagleheart and myself, but I'll be the "conductor" of the riddle, so to speak.

I am but a sign of the times, my friend,
the promise of better days;
Inspiring awe, then hatred and fear--
regret comes slow but stays.

I've travelled 'round the world, my friend,

The riddle to solve is how, my friend,
these occurred simultaneously.

Mmmkay, Mako reactor(s)?

I am but a sign of the times, my friend, - Mako energy was a big evolution times changed.
the promise of better days; -Towns are promised to get a better life once they have mako reactors.
Inspiring awe, then hatred and fear-- - First people think Mako is good (they're shocked), then they begin to hate it and try do do
stuff about the Mako reactor. Then Shinra takes over the town
and (threathens) to destroy it.
regret comes slow but stays. - At first it seems good, but people find out Mako energy is the lifeforce of the planet, which is being drained. And creatures get mutated because of Mako reactors.

I've travelled 'round the world, my friend, - Mako reactors are everywhere across the globe.
by wing andw heel and rail,
watched creation bled to serve
and heard its solemn wail.

I've seen great mountains, and many a village,
touched clouds and the depths of the sea; -Perhaps refers to locations of Mako reactors.
The riddle to solve is how, my friend,
these occurred simultaneously.[/quote]

musenji

Close to spot on with the logic, but again not exactly the answer we had in mind.

PhoenixAsh
03-29-2007, 09:35 PM
Hey musenji :D, I've bounced around a few ideas, and I have got two, neither of which I can entirely fit, but I'll go with clones/Jenova cells:

I am but a sign of the times, my friend,
the promise of better days; (They were meant to be the new brand of warriors)
Inspiring awe, then hatred and fear-- (Sephiroth)
regret comes slow but stays. (Maybe Nibelheim, maybe just general

I've travelled 'round the world, my friend, (The clones are everywhere)
by wing and wheel and rail, (Cloud manages all of these)
watched creation bled to serve (Jenova herself witnessed this from the start, and Cloud in Avalanche more directly)
and heard its solemn wail. (Sephiroth does this when he is asleep and learns the knowledge of the ancients)

I've seen great mountains, and many a village,
touched clouds and the depths of the sea;
The riddle to solve is how, my friend,
these occurred simultaneously. (My problem with this is the second part, Cloud sees mountains and villages simulatneously in space, but unless 'touching' is metaphorical then that doesn't carry to the next line...)

I do think this is wrong, but my other guesses, which are closer to Light Mage's answer don't fit well enough yet.

musenji
03-29-2007, 10:16 PM
Hey! :D

You're right that that's not it. Did you see the hint in post 3364?

"Touched" does literally mean "came into contact with", though "seen/watched/heard" are less literal.

Light Mage
03-30-2007, 06:50 AM
The Huge Materia?

musenji

Hints:

-"touched" literally means came into physical contact with
-"seen/watched/heard" are not quite so literal
-the answer can be smaller than a fist or larger than a house

"Shinra corporation" is the closest guess so far, but we're looking for something slightly more specific.

Does this have something to do with the deap sea mako reactor?

touched clouds and the depths of the sea;
The riddle to solve is how, my friend,
these occurred simultaneously.

How these occurred simultaneously -> How clouds and
the depths of the sea occurred simultaneously -> How/when
Cloud and the depths of the sea occurred simultaneously.

Abstraction!

musenji
03-31-2007, 12:39 AM
What the last three lines mean is simply this:

How can the answer be in physical contact with clouds in the sky and water at the bottom of the sea--at the same time?

Dragon Mage
03-31-2007, 02:11 AM
Umm, the sunken Gelinka?

musenji
03-31-2007, 04:35 AM
I re-iterate: touching clouds in the sky and the depths of the sea at the same time.

The Gelnika could be involved in the answer, actually, but is not the answer itself, as it could have touched only one of those things at a time.

Light Mage
03-31-2007, 05:30 AM
Technology?

musenji

Edit: ...or rather, travels on them.

The Shinra logo?

I am but a sign of the times, my friend, (Actually literally a 'sign')
the promise of better days; (Shinra's message)
Inspiring awe, then hatred and fear-- (Again Shinra, also represting the actual image/association nature of the answer)
regret comes slow but stays. (Referring to above)

I've travelled 'round the world, my friend
by wing and wheel and rail, (On trains, cars and the Highwind)
watched creation bled to serve
and heard its solemn wail. (Its on the reactors)

I've seen great mountains, and many a village, (Its in a lot of villages, and in the Nibelheim reactor, plus on the highwind and rocket)
touched clouds and the depths of the sea; (Highwind, rocket, underwater reactor, Gelnika)
The riddle to solve is how, my friend,
these occurred simultaneously. (Its on all of these at the same time)#

-"touched" literally means came into physical contact with (Its physically painted or located on things)
-"seen/watched/heard" are not quite so literal (As above)
-the answer can be smaller than a fist or larger than a house (Logo can be made any size)

I actually don't know if the logo is on any of these things, but it fits.

Eagleheart
04-01-2007, 04:51 AM
Spot on, old bean! Good stuff, good stuff. To be quite honest, neither musenji or I actually went and checked to make sure that the logo was in all the places we said it was, we just made fairly safe assumptions. Also, the logo is in my signature. Which wasn't really meant to serve as a hint, it's just irony.

Okay, its been a while since I did this :) Could be hard, or I might have given enough to work from:

Somewhere in amid Garden’s throng,
It sounds like its before the storm.
What comes after may not off?
The water's edge blessed by the warm.
Below the surface life is heard,
Under Midas’ cup,
That’s not a word.

The question that should spring to mind,
Is what is destined by these lines?

EDIT: just wanted to say kudos to Eagleheart and musenji for their riddle, loved how literally the first line actually gives the answer :D.

Somewhere in amid Garden’s throng, (Midgar "a MID GARdens's")
It sounds like its before the storm. (Kalm, the one that comes before the storm)
What comes after may not off? (Junon. June comes after may, "on" not off)
The water's edge blessed by the warm. (Costa "coast" del Sol "of the sun" The coast is the water's edge, the sun is the warm)
Below the surface life is heard, (Mideel. The lifestream is beneath it?)
Under Midas’ cup, (Gold Saucer)
That’s not a word. (I'd have to guess...gongaga? Definitely not a word)

The question that should spring to mind,
Is what is destined by these lines? (Various cities in FFVII)

The only lines I'm not sure of are the fifth and seventh, but I'm almost positive of all the others.

PhoenixAsh

"Perch" calls to mind a bird of some sort, and Fort Condor is the only place being directly ravaged by war. Okay, its been way to long since I played this, but it sounds like some kind of vending machine that Cloud either hits or kicks because it doesn't work, and gives an item it shouldn't and nothing (very little) else. It also sounds like there is another vendor of some sort nearby.

I can't remember if it fits the description, but the thing you get Premium Heart from?

Do those Mighty Grunts (red dudes who then turn blue and skinny) count as objects? They take a while to go down (except on your second visit) and give Tranquilizers, something which cures Fury, thus turning you away from your anger.

That's pretty farfetched.

If you're going to take something that unimportant in your

Maybe the big Phoenix on top of the Condor Fort thing?
No, but I think I can kind of see how you got to that reasoning, and I rather like it. Someone needs to write a riddle about the Phoenix on top of Fort Condor, because it seems like quite a good answer.

That just makes me think of North Crater and Sephiroth.
Nope, not it.

When and if I should happen to need to give hints, I'm likely to give them in the form of supplementary stanzas to the riddle, is that all right? Or do people prefer straight up things like "It's a _______" or "It's not a ________"?

Well yeah but your riddle eventually came down to a small
event that happens just once in the game, that's just
too farfetched for me. I bet in order to solve it either
he played through the Shinra HQ part or he looked the
part up in a gamefaq.

What the hell!? I'm getting attacked because I have

Shame on you, you were in fact bashing him. You comment on members like Roto, when you're not even in the right predicament to talk. That was a perfectly justified riddle, and was challenging. You may lack skills in riddles or the sort, but some people like to crack a code. Most likely, he didn't look at an FAQ, he probably done it the way smart people do, and that's remembering a past event. Can't believe someone can get jealous over harmless fun, please stop now.

Actually I'm gonna side with DeStyle a bit. I generally prefer to make riddles that are about very well known things. Its quite annoying to spend a long time staring at a riddle to try and find the trick, and then find out later that the answer was something so obscure you had no chance of getting it.

D33p Darkn3ss' riddle happened to be very clearly written, which was why I could do most of the working for it without having any memory of that vending machine. As a general rule though I say make the question difficult, not the answer.

As for the current riddle:

High over the earth, (the only things that are high up are meteor, Highwind, Ultima Weapon, certain buildings, the rocket and mountains)
The paradox sleeps, (only Ultima Weapon, or something in the mountains or buildings, sleeps high up)
North of rebirth, (Ultima and mountains are North of what I'm guessing is Fort Condor or Mideel)
And south of the deeps. (Everything is South of the crater, and only Mideel is South of much sea. This doesn't help much)

Bows to the marksman, (Ultima can be hit from the highwind and killed but its a long way away. Alternately, Lucrecia, who lives in a cave as above responds to Vincent, the best fit for a marksman)
Though it masters the first. (This doesn't make much sense to me, though Lucrecia is the mother of Sephiroth, Clone 1, and Ultimate kind of wins its first fight with the party)
Bequeaths the best, (Gives Vincent Death Penalty/ Cloud Ultimate Weapon)
In exchange for the worst. (Then Dies)

So I'd go with Lucrecia, although I'm wary of how high up she is... In which case Ultimate Weapon seems more likely...

Hazzard
04-17-2007, 11:18 AM
So even if you get that Lucrecia guess wrong, then you'll probably get the Ultimate Weapon one, right.

i'm gonna guess ultima WEAPON.

High over the earth, --> it waits in the air until u encounter it for real on disc 3
The paradox sleeps, --> it doesnt actually do anything until u crash into it
North of rebirth, --> cloud is "reborn" as himself in mideel after the lifestream event, and ultima WEAPONS original postion is above the crater to the norht of mideel
And south of the deeps. --> the largest ocean on the map is to the north of that continent . . . i think :D

Bows to the marksman, --> is out of reach to anyone on the ground in some battles, unless they have a gun/long range weapon
Though it masters the first. --> not sure on this bit
Bequeaths the best, --> ultima weapon
In exchange for the worst. --> the mass of battles u have to fight and tracking it around the world to fight it.

i bet i'm miles off :D

PhoenixAsh
04-18-2007, 09:31 AM
Actually, I'll try a slightly different line and go with the Temple of the Ancients:

High over the earth, (Tall Building)
The paradox sleeps, (This actually fits more than usual, as its one of the most paradoxical things in the game)
North of rebirth, (I think it is actually North of Mideel)
And south of the deeps. (Its also now South of the main oceans)

Bows to the marksman, (It lets people with the keystone enter, but I'm not sure why that means marksman)
Though it masters the first. (Tseng falls before you get there)
Bequeaths the best, (Meteor the most powerful destructive magic)
In exchange for the worst. (Requires someone to die in order to get it)

Eagleheart
04-18-2007, 03:47 PM
Nope. Again, some of the right reasoning, but not applied correctly.

Eagleheart
04-18-2007, 05:23 PM
I'm rather adverse, personally, to answering general questions about the specific qualities of the answer, I feel it's against the spirit of the things. I will say again that a lot of people are following approximately the right reasoning.

If more people ask for it, I'll put up a hint in the form of another stanza, which will give more insight to the nature of the answer.

Sephitachi7
04-18-2007, 06:06 PM

North of rebirth,
And south of the deeps.

Bows to the marksman,
Though it masters the first.
Bequeaths the best,
In exchange for the worst.

When you find it again,
Need it you'll not,
After the ultimate price,
A negligible cost.
