“The Tango Riddle”
Deserved for breathing life back in, (Shiva)
Stop a giant mastered from within. (Proud Clod)
Cause beginning of life to come to an end, (Ifrit)
Life’s story told in a place to mend. (Kalm)
Responding with dance is slightly strange, (Choco/Mog)
Do spaceship watchers ever change? (people in Rocket Town)
When father’s daughter takes the crown, (Leviathan)
Overlooking two of nine’s hometown. (Mt. Nibel)
Over an unwelcome touch a kind of storm, (Alexander)
Use surer feet or land deformed. (Ancient Forest)
From Alpha to Omega the elements combined,
With a sidewards glance should your path unwind.
Some research done and one more glance,
Just exactly who would love this chance?
Basically, it's become clear that you can't get straight to the final answer--there are a couple of steps inbetween. The first step was to figure out what each of the first ten lines referred to, which has been done.
The next step is to figure out what the last stanza is telling you to do. This is something that has to be done line by line.
The second line of the last stanza is meant to reveal the phrase "cloud sword". However, this was only supposed to happen as a result of solving the previous line, "From alpha to omega the elements combined". Without solving that line properly, you're left at a dead end.
As I meant to strongly imply with my recent post, the "elements" line relates to the summons referred to in the first 5 stanzas. And something to do with alphabetical order. And it relates to the elements of the summons, not the summons themselves.
All of this was said already, but with a lot of incorrect speculation inbetween. So, here's hoping that this little summary helps.
I, for one, would vote for PA simply spelling out what that line means, but he's got the prerogative. Hope I haven't completely overstepped my bounds. I mean in any normal circumstance I would've been out of line here, but he asked if I could add anything, so I'm tryin' to help out.

Cause beginning of life to come to an end, (Ifrit) (Fire)
Life’s story told in a place to mend. (Kalm)
Over an unwelcome touch a kind of storm, (Alexander) (Holy)
Use surer feet or land deformed. (Ancient Forest)
Deserved for breathing life back in, (Shiva) (Ice)
Stop a giant mastered from within. (Proud Clod)
When father’s daughter takes the crown, (Leviathan) (Water)
Overlooking two of nine’s hometown. (Mt. Nibel)
Responding with dance is slightly strange, (Choco/Mog) (*non-elemental*)
Do spaceship watchers ever change? (people in Rocket Town)
From Alpha to Omega the elements combined, (Fire, Holy, Ice, Water, *non-elemental*) in alphabetical order. The stanzas arranged spell out CLOUD SWORD now! So that's the missing step to get CLOUD SWORD, I assume now that they are in order something esle should appear from the riddle possibly to do with the towns. Any ideas?

Thanks musenji, I was determined not to give a full explanation to that, its too much of a key point in the riddle... I didn't quite expect it to take that long of course :)
JonyH, thats it (except Choco/Mog is actually a Wind elemental).
Also, to people still wondering what the point of all that was, it was, as JonyH seems to have identified, to make clear what has and hasn't been used so far.
Not far to go!
EDIT: Almost forgot my own riddle solution there :) Actually there is more point to that move than simply discovering CLOUD SWORD, but don't worry, that is the complete solution up until the final two lines.

So the final answer is a person?
Is it (Mr. Obvious) Cloud himself?
Carl the Llama
08-21-2007, 11:08 PM
I could be wrong here but is it the Heaven's Cloud sword I figues the last line is refering to the fact that the lower his HP is the less damage this weapon does?
PhoenixAsh
08-21-2007, 11:49 PM
No and no :P Here's a hint, the solution to the riddle MAY require you to not ignore half of the lines, if you haven't used everything, you aint got the answer :)
Also, I should point out that a while back someone solved a huge chunk of the next line, but I didn't mention it at the time because it would have confused things... Its part of the section where I said a whole load of people got things right (most of which have now been identified such as the elements etc.)
Also also, the time has come where you need to look at the whole riddle. You still can't get the answer in one step (I buried it deep :D ), but it is VERY soon.
If noone gets the next step soon then I'll give hints, but it would be nice to see the working done after all this time :) Especially as the majority of it (and believe me this line is not easy) has been done already :)

On the Cloud Sword matter:
Defeating Proud Clod gets you the Ragnarok.
In Kalm you can buy the Mythril Saber.
The old man in Rocket Town gives you the Yoshiyuki.
You'll find the Rune Blade on Mt. Nibel.
In Ancient forest, you can get the Apocalypse.
Edit: I just saw this part had already been posted, but I figured it out myself anyway :jess: (end edit)
Finding these weapons could be the research mentioned. "Another glance" gets me further: With the stanzas put in the elemental/alphabetical order, the weapons' starting letters spell "MARRY". And exactly who would love the chance of marriage? How about Priscilla ("Cause you're gonna marry me one day").
My guess for the answer is Priscilla.

 I was expecting a LITTLE bit of groping around before someone got it! Congratulations Rantzien!
Seriously, well done to everyone who contributed to solving this, I was amazed it got stuck out as long as it did, so thank you :)
Well I enjoyed that :) Rantzien, you're up!
EDIT: Oh, and for reference the title "The Tango Riddle" was meant to refer to the fact that the early lines were designed to move around in pairs. The full solution (its now spread over several pages was):
“The Tango Riddle”
Deserved for breathing life back in, (Shiva)
Stop a giant mastered from within. (Proud Clod)
Cause beginning of life to come to an end, (Ifrit)
Life’s story told in a place to mend. (Kalm)
Responding with dance is slightly strange, (Choco/Mog)
Do spaceship watchers ever change? (people in Rocket Town)
When father’s daughter takes the crown, (Leviathan)
Overlooking two of nine’s hometown. (Mt. Nibel)
Over an unwelcome touch a kind of storm, (Alexander)
Use surer feet or land deformed. (Ancient Forest)
From Alpha to Omega the elements combined,
With a sidewards glance should your path unwind.
Some research done and one more glance,
Just exactly who would love this chance?
1) Break down the individual lines.
2) Notice each pair contains a summon and an event/place.
3) Use the alpha/omega/elements line combined with the fact this is "The tango riddle" to move the lines in pairs into the correct order.
4) Sidewards glance obviously to realize that the information you haven't yet used relates to Cloud's swords (you made this leap sooner than I expected )
5) Once the pairs have been moved to spell CLOUD SWORD, then the swords should automatically be in the correct order for MARRY.
6) Then yes, it was Priscilla I had in mind

I thought "Tango" referred to that the solving was divided into "steps". Great riddle, I have to say. :) I'm sorry that I just barged in and sort of stole the answer from those who have helped solving it from the start.
This one is written quickly, it's likely to be easy:
I might be your rescue
or I might be your doom,
I can push you out of sight
my master left to loom
Signs of love will give you
the marksman's perfect sight,
while royal bling provides you
an army fit for fight
Sometimes I bring you demons
at other times I dance
But always when you see me
I am a game of chance!

Well I wouldn't have guessed the answer to the riddle before. The sad part is I don't use Slots. I prefer Dice. :D
And as for the PhoenixAsh's riddle, it ranked up there with the infamous FFIX Riddle of Doom. :skull: But PhoenixAsh was a lot more gracious about it.

I don't think this is correct, but just to get the ball rolling I'll go with the GP salesman:
For those in a hurry (quick way to get GP rather than having to earn it)
Please pay a visit (obvious enough)
But if you don't see (The italics worried me, though you can't see him when he isn't there, quite rare for someone to disappear in FFVII)
What you want (Him/GP)
Then go away and
Come back later (He spawns randomly (I think), so if you leave and come back he eventually will turn up)
Oh, and thanks... I think... I was aware of the riddle you're talking about, but didn't follow it so I don't know what happened with it :)
Rantz

It went on for, what was it, 30 pages? Then it got it's own thread and continued for another x pages. The sad thing was that the answer wasn't "guessed" as such but rather a passing mention which was confirmed by Thingfish.
musenji
08-23-2007, 09:33 AM
I've heard tales of that one. Never saw it, myself. I always wondered if it was just some randomly elaborate and vague concoction, or if it was all logically connected and graspable. Anyone have a link? I've never played FF9 so I won't get it, probably, but sometimes you can get a sense of these things even when you haven't played the game.

It's not the GP seller, but you're correct that the italics are significant.
Here's the thread (http://forums.eyesonff.com/final-fantasy-ix/68276-thingfishs-riddle.html) for the Riddle of Doom.

Again, pretty sure I'm wrong, but fishing for ideas... Lucrecia's cave?
For those in a hurry (You get Death Penalty and Chaos, either could tenuously relate to a hurry, also both make you stronger which would speed you up)
Please pay a visit (Literal)
But if you don't see
What you want (Lucrecia only appears to Vincent, again one of the few places where something disappears...)
Then go away and
Come back later (... and the items only appear once you've left and fought battles before returning)
I have a feeling that "see" is referring to something that can be interacted with whilst invisible, or at least where vision is more relevant than what I've come up with, but I'm taking shots here :)
I checked out Thingfish's riddle thread. Impressively worked, but I really hate obscure answers. I don't like the idea that I'm trying to solve a riddle when theres a high possibility that I have never heard of the solution.

You bassically make the correct answer a sentence of somekind, while people say merly words.
I'd have to say that house at the bottom of the continent where a guy is there once a while you get to trade an item to select.

I actually hate riddles that rely on single-word answers, because they almost always remove any thought or challenge from it, making it less fun. Good on you BG, for keeping these threads interesting!
The last four lines make me think of Enemy Skills, which are learnt when a monster uses a certain technique against you. If you don't see what (skill being used) you want ... come back later. Particularly the Midgar Zolom, as "come back later" implies that it's an encounter you can initiate yourself, and the Zolom is the only enemy with an ES that I can think of that falls into that category. But the first two lines contradict that theory completely. In fact, they also contradict each other, because if you're in a hurry you won't be visiting anyone.
In fact, the first line could be referring to Meteor. Then "please pay a visit" would indicate a story-relevant event or person. I've still got no idea what, though, but maybe someone else might be able to think of it.

Oh ok so maybe it's Cloud's Ultima weapon since his name starts with a C? If you don't see Ultima Weapon just wait until Cid's theme is playing on the world map is I think when he first appears.
Yuffie's ultimate weapon starts with a c, conformer, but that doesn't seem to fit the riddle since as soon as you get the sub you can get it, and you don't have access to the area beforehand.
Maybe since Cid starts with C, it's his ultimate weapon. I think the old guy gives it to you by the rocket. Oh yeah you have to talk to him a bunch of times so it kinda fits the riddle, and also if he gives you the Yoshiyuki, you have to wait until there's no rocket to "see," then you get the Venus Gospel.

We have a winner! :D
The answer is the second floor item shop in Shinra HQ building. The first time you can go in is if you opt to do a frontal assault on the building (for those in a hurry). Both items are in chests but the sales clerk refuses to let you open them. So your second chance is in the invasion of Midgar (come back later).
Perhaps a picture would explain the C and see better than words.

Oooh ooh is it the sleeping man near junon? If not...does it get you a materia? "In favour of the green" does that mean a materia, or just benefiting the world? Fort Condor, maybe? Heavens grant might also be a materia, but i think it's more summon materia. So, either a summon materia which helps the environment, or a green materia, which doesn't really. As to the last verse...Comet materia? It's found in City of the Ancients, in a room you don't have to visit, but i think it gets blocked off after Aeris dies...maybe i'm wrong, idk.

"Heaven's grant" does not refer to a materia and the Comet materia is not referred to. Your speculation was good, but the riddle is a bit more literate, mostly. Only one line in the riddle is fully metaphorical.

No arms I provide, no rest (the beds and shop are downstairs)
I'm an option in between (The ladder upstairs is literally between them)
I will put you to a test (The battles)
in favour of the green (You have to pay, or at least can)
But I'll help you too, don't fret! (You get reinforcements)
A heaven's grant might be of use (Ummm... I'm guessing a specific unit?)
Aggregate power you will get (Again the reinforcements)
You haven't got much to lose! (Well you don't)
So come on, warrior, heed the call! (It is about fighting, this may also be a clarion call reference)
Though you by coming here
before death's peace build thrice a wall (Not sure why thrice, but before death's peace is presumably before the Condor dies, after which you can't fight)
there is no need to fear. (You can't die in the battle?)

It's not the Materia shop in Rocket Town. "Heaven's grant" does not refer to a materia, however, "aggregate power" does. "Thrice a wall" has nothing to do with any magic.

No.

No, not the Proud Clod battle. The "No arms I provide, no rest" works alone as a clue, but most things don't provide arms or rest. The line is only really helpful when you follow up with the second line. Also, remember that the test mentioned is "in favour of the green". Heidegger is hardly in favour by the battle ;)

Still not right. You're thinking far too metaphorically, except for the next to last line, where you're not being metaphorical enough.
Here's a few hints:
The word "aggregate" even tells you what materia it's referring to.
"there is no need to fear" is (arguably) the least important line, it's mostly there for rhyme and rhythm. Otherwise, basically every line and word counts for something more than it says.

The White Chocobo giving the Contain Materia.
The test in favour of the green could refer to handing over some Mimett Greens in order for a chance to pet him, and I just read "aggregate" being defined as, literally, "something composed of many elements". As I recall, the correct option, "Tickle behind his ears" is in the middle of the list, an option in between. (I could be totally wrong about that)
Is this "heaven's grant" a reference to the way Materia taps into the power of the Ancients?
If this is wrong, I have an idea for another possible answer, but since the rules say one answer per checkup, I gotta wait for you.
Rantz

Wrong, but great reasoning. "Green" does not refer to the colour green in this case. "An option in between" talks about the physical world, although your interpretation was clever. :)
"Heaven's grant" has a very literal meaning, which has nothing to do with Materia or any divine form of heaven or metaphorical representations of it.

Hyperion in your analysis of the first stanza only "I will put you to a test - Ask a question" actually fits. Barret is not green, Vincent does provide arms, and being an optional character puts him nowhere between arms and rest.
In the second stanza you suggest that a heaven's grant is a beast? Vincent is anything but heavenly, unless you simply mean undead.
In the third stanza how does Vincent's situation relate to "thrice a wall"?
In short, let it go. I have no idea what the answer to this riddle is, but how about you have a go at Rantzien after you find out? Or better yet - don't.

there is no need to fear (umm...)
Correct! Let me give you my full explanation:
No arms I provide, no rest
I'm an option in between
As you said, the place doesn't provide arms or rest, but directly above is a resting place, and directly below is a weapon shop, rendering the room an "option in between arms and rest".
I will put you to a test
in favour of the green
You are asked to explain the basics of the green to those who are "green", i.e. beginners.
But I'll help you too, don't fret!
A heaven's grant might be of use
At one spot, a chest containing an Ether drops down, seemingly from the sky.
Aggregate power you will get
This indeed refers to the All materia you can get. "Aggregate" is a one-word description of the kind of power the All materia gives you.
You haven't got much to lose!
Well, for one, there is really nothing to lose, except time. Moreover, this is a hint at the early point in the game. You don't have much items and the like yet.
So come on, warrior, heed the call!
"Heed the call" is a reference to the message the weapon shop man gives you via Tifa, a "call" to come there. "Warrior" is a minor hint, just a reference to how the beginners refer to you mainly as "SOLDIER".
Though you by coming here
before death's peace build thrice a wall
Remember how, in Junon, you can find another room like this? In there are the "ghosts" of the three workers found in the original Beginner's Hall. If you talk to them, they tell you something like "your explanations were so complicated I couldn't return to the planet". Therefore you "build thrice a wall before death's peace" by coming to the original Beginner's Hall.
there is no need to fear.
As I said earlier, this line is not very substantial, it's mostly an affirmation to "you haven't got much to lose", and for filling up.
Your go!
Hyperion4444, I'm sorry if you didn't enjoy the riddle, but there's no need to be rude about it. This is how I write riddles and it is as right as any other way.

It isn't the Dice Limit Break, though meeting Cid is (technically) mentioned in the riddle. However, it's not relevant, as it refers to the alternative to what the answer actually is.

I may well be just what you need
I'd love to bring you up to speed
Curiosity's killing the cat you say?
Cait Sith sacrificing himself for the black materia.
Then kindly turn the other way!
The price is high no matter what
They had to sacrifice someone to get it.
But come and get it while it's hot
Else hold on until you are nine;
After Cid joins you.
Fortitude equally divine
Shan't blame you if you wish to wait
But look, eighteen plus fifty-eight?
Does this have to do with the big clock?
When time's a factor you will see
You will come running back for me
Hmm, Cid joining your party is a big tipoff, so it sounds like either Temple of the Ancients, or Black Materia, or the Keystone. Or it might have something to do with Wutai.

"Curiosity killing the cat" doesn't refer to Cait Sith sacrificing himself, but actually refers to the famous idiom; in this case it relates to Cait Sith's curiosity getting to him.
"Else hold on until you are nine" does refer to Cid joining the party, so you wanna look for something that can be done before Cid joins.

A winner is you!
"Bring you up to speed" refers to the Haste effect, "Fortitude equally divine" means you can otherwise get the Barrier Materia once you've been to Rocket Town (Time is in Gongaga, and if you miss it, it's in Rocket Town right next to Barrier), and "Eighteen plus fifty eight?" refers to the individual costs of casting Haste and Wall repsectively.
P.S. I'm gonna be ultra pedantic and mention that there's no way to learn White Wind off the Wing Wing, as you can't Manipulate them and I believe it's unaffected by Reflect.

Most likely Japanese and English. But I really don't know the Japanese names for most things, unless they are direct transliterations.
I've had many names would suggest something that has appeared in several FF installments, although it's remotely possible that it's something that appears only in FFVII and is referrred to by different names in either English or Japanese.
Continuing with the musical theme, is it the FF opening music? It's known as Prelude in FFVII and The Loser in FFVIII although it's essentially the same tune.

Hmm. :plotting:
If it's anagram or hidden code I'm hopeless at that sort of thing. I can't find any letters that were given special emphasis and the capital letters spell out Y T B F A I I Y O, which doesn't mean anything to me.
The first six lines would fit with almost any battle theme I can think of. I don't understand exactly what the last three lines mean though. It could be translation issues, like Basilisk phonetically rendered into Japanese and then back into English as Bagrisk for the monster and Vagrisk Claw for the item that the monster sometimes drops. That sort of thing?
Anyways, I'm going to guess by elimination for now. Is it Jenova Absolute?

Well, it was worth a shot, since many of the words in that title show up in the riddle.
Is it Still More Fighting?
ReloadPsi
10-13-2007, 08:10 PM
Indeed.
"Sara ni tatakau monotachi" has been unofficially translated with many names since the soundtrack's release, simply because Square never gave the tracks English names themselves. "Still More Fighting" was apparently the most popular choice along with "Again the People Fight" which is a more literal translation, and similar names given to fan versions like "Fight On" at Overclocked Remix (which by the way is awesome, go listen to it if you ain't already), and Babelfish's hilarious "Furthermore Fighting ni People".
They were all way off: When "The Black Mages" was released, it was confirmed as "Those Who Fight Further".
What I'm getting at is that "Sara ni tatakau monotachi" is its only name in a certain tongue (Japanese) but has gone by like a zillion names in English. As for the wording of the riddle, I made sure to include the words "fight", "still", "further" and so on.
Thought it'd be nice to do a riddle based on what is far and away my favourite piece of video game music of all time.
Anyways BG-57, it's your turn.

Riddle Threads 101
These riddle threads are essentially the same in every forum:
1) A riddle is posted, relating somehow to the game (in this case FFVII).
2) Everyone else tries to guess what the riddle is about, be it person, place, or thing.
3) The riddle poster generally provides feedback (at the very least whether guesses are correct or incorrect). Hints are sometimes provided by the poster, but it's not required.
4) The first person to correctly solve the riddle gets the option to post their own riddle. If they refuse to, then the next riddle can be posted by anyone on a first-come first-served basis. Which leads you back to step 1).
It's very important to know that only one riddle is allowed to be posted and solved at a time. If the poster is being slow with feedback you can amuse yourself with side riddles, but they are not part of the riddle chain in any way shape or form.
Right now the riddle is mine since I sucessfully solved the last one by ReloadPsi.

Is it the Ancient Forest, the place you get the Apocalypse sword, Ultima Weapon creates a Hole there after you defeat him, thus granting you access to the forest without a green Chocobo?

Oh!
Is it the underwater crater that Emerald Weapon likes to hang around in? It's never explained what caused it.

and BG gets it! nice job guys! i'll fill in the gaps
an obvious and large presence --> it's a really big hole! :D
though i get bigger the more you take away --> holes get bigger as you take more out of them
unknown is the creation, from above of down below --> we never learn why the hole is there, it just is
my secret's guarded by a great envy--> emerald weapon (green with envy) hangs round the hole as BG said.
GJ dude! ur move

wrong guess:
lunar harp
music box
emerald weapon
is it titan? it's a summon (blessed), has a similar effect to earth drum and can only be used in battle, which has awesome music! :D

Good guess, but it's not Titan.

After some research (I know I know lol I couldn't figure it out just w/ my knowledge) I found out it's christopher that you fight in Northern Crater. You can steal earth drum from him(Gives you good vibrations) and you can learn Frog Song (And music for night viewing)
BG-57

You are correct, although Frog Song is not one of the hints.
Counted among the blessed (Saint Christopher has the same name)
And deserving of a medal (There's a Saint Christopher medal)
Gives you good vibrations (Earth Drum)
And music for night viewing (Stardust March is one of his attacks)
Your go, Sephitachi7! :)
