Square-Enix has just released screenshots from the new character creation interface that has been built for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. Check them out below!
Chicks dig scars. It’s really the only reason Rinoa liked Squall.
You can apparently see your character in different environments.
The first thing that leaps out at me from the screenshots is the much greater degree of customization that is allowed from the new interface. Lip color? Highlights? You could spend all day just going through the options if you wanted.
And of course, female characters have a “Bust Size” option.
That’s “very large”? But she can still stand up straight!
It looks like the development team has done a lot of work to revamp the character creator. The options for “facial features” still seem fairly limited, though they vary substantially between the sexes/races, and I’m sure more options will be added as the game develops.
What do you think about the new interface? Are you eager to

Some assorted updates for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn:
The Lodestone has announced that notification emails have been sent out to accepted alpha testers in Japan, where the alpha testing will begin. It looks like the alpha is on track to commence at the end of this month, as promised, but only in Japan. For those players outside of Japan, there is no word yet on precisely when the alpha testing will start in your regions, but you can still apply to be an alpha tester by visiting the application site.
In response to player questions, a developer announced on the official forums that faction credits and guild leve allowance will be reset for A Realm Reborn (the link goes to an unofficial translation). If you currently have any faction credits, you should be sure to use them before the service shutdown next week! (I know, thanks for the heads up, SE, right?)
Speaking of the big shutdown, we’re just over one week away. It has been previously reported that the date of the full shutdown

While Square Enix is searching for their No. 1 Fan, an event for the FF fanatics has already taken place. The FINAL FANTASY Experience was held in Seattle, WA on August 31 and and brought people together with a shared love of the series. For those of us who couldn't make it, the guys at iam8bit compiled a short video (below) giving us a glimpse of what the event was like.
Also, the winners of our limited edition Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary posters will be revealed live very soon in our chatroom! Join in and see if you've scored one!

Ah, Final Fantasy II. With the arguable exception of the third installment in the series, it is probably the least played and well known Final Fantasy game. Before I got around to playing it, I can recall it being treated with derision as the weakest installment by many in the community here on EoFF. After I did so, I was only left wondering why.
Number seven in our top themes hails from that game, and it wouldn't surprise me if many of you will be hearing it for the first time. It is the theme of Princess Hilda and the Wild Rose Rebellion, which, incidentally, would make a fine name for a band. You can also call it the Rebel Army theme, which is not quite as exciting. Let's listen.
This is the original NES version. I imagine you're not overly impressed, although this is the first version of the song I personally heard and it was the one that stuck in my mind. It's really simple, but really what I want to do is show you what that song has become.
As you may know, there have been numerous re-releases of FFII, and as such, the soundtrack has also received a facelift. Let's take a listen to a more modern version that

Do you play Final Fantasy XIV? Do you like scary stories? Then you should check out the FFXIV official forums for a special Halloween event. Five winners will each be awarded a special in-game item: a Scarf of Wondrous Wit.
To participate, write a spine-chilling original story set in Eorzea, and post it on the forums along with a screenshot of your character telling the tale to friends at a campfire. The Community Team will select the five best entries and award the winners with the Scarf of Wondrous Wit in-game item. Draw inspiration from the lore-rich realm of Eorzea, and pen a tale that will strike fear into the hearts of even the bravest adventurers!
The entry period is open now, and only lasts until October 25th, so get your entries in quickly. Or just enjoy the spooky stories of your fellow players!
Unfortunately, this contest is limited to NA players, because we’re the only ones who truly appreciate Halloween. Sorry, EU and Japan players, but it’s not our fault that your culture is inferior.

Welcome to another exciting week! We have some great fan art to show off this week, so sit back, relax, and enjoy yourselves. As always, with art from the fans of Final Fantasy, be sure to visit the sources and give the artists your compliments if you like their stuff. They will love you forever. I know I will! :3
There aren't many people as well known in Final Fantasy as Yosh>itaka Amano. The legendary artist has created some very iconic pieces, and his art is highly collectible; just ask our very own Amano-enthusiast, espritduo! Not only that, but it is Amano's art featured on the limited edition posters we're giving away!
Amano has created a wide range of Final Fantasy artwork, including the title cards
He was recently interviewed by Kotaku and revealed his two favourite characters: Kain and Terra. For him, they were the closest to real actors, come to life through his artwork. They're also two of my personal favourite characters and were given powerful parts to play in their respective games.
The interview also revealed some other interesting facts, like Amano has never played a Final Fantasy game; his children would always snatch them up before he could.
Last month we brought you news of the Square Enix hacking that took their Official Online Goods Store offline. Though there was apparently no financial threat to customers with credit card details not being stored online, other information such as names and mailing addresses might have been compromised.
A month after the breach was discovered, Square Enix has announced the permanent retirement of the site.
Square Enix will be consolidating the defunct store's products into the official Square Enix e-store.
The products previously vendored through the Official Online Goods Store - which was primarily focused on collectibles and character goods - aren't gone forever though. Square Enix will shift it all over to their official e-store, which has previously been only for games and music.
Consolidating their products into a single online store after a successful breach seems like a risky idea to me though. What do

Square Enix is searching for the ultimate Final Fantasy fan. The competition requires fans to submit a 30-60 second video showcasing why they deserve to be crowned the series' No. 1 Fan. And if that isn't enough, the winner will score themselves two tickets to the Distant Worlds concert in Paris (ooh la la!) as well as a copy of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. Not bad for a minute of effort, right?

There is a far fetched rumor going around that Squenix might be thinking about doing another Chrono game. It sounds mostly like a fan rumor caused by recent murmurings so it's most likely not true but it would be interesting none the less. Chrono Trigger was released in 1995 to critical and fan acclaim and was considered a nice send off of for the end of the 16-bit era. The story revolved around a group of teens accidentally discovering a way to time travel using a teleporter. When the teens discover that the world is going to be destroyed by an evil alien parasite in the future, the group start a fantastic journey through time to try and change the future. The game was designed by the Dream Team of Yuji Hori (Dragon Quest), Hironobu Sakaguchi (Final Fantasy, Blue Dragon), and Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball) and was the first time the two rival RPG powerhouse companies of Enix and Square would co-create a game. The game featured cutting edge 16-bit graphics, a unique battle system that involved combining

I start off Number 8 with a very simple question: Does anybody who has completed Final Fantasy IX dislike Beatrix? I emphasise the word "completed" as if you're only halfway through and she's merrily blasting you down to 1 HP while calling you an insect, then no doubt you're not her biggest fan.
I say themes, because it does appear in two songs on the Final Fantasy IX soundtrack, and I'm including them both because I want to show you how the same song can have such different meanings. Here's the first one, Rose of May:
Neither fast nor slow in tempo, this is a purely piano piece that stays with you. Everybody I've spoken to says the song makes them feel differently. Some say it is a sad song, others say it is more stoic or proud, and others still say it is calm and peaceful. As for your humble narrator, it makes me think of courage, but it is rather sad too, I feel.
An interesting piece of trivia for this song is that it is often called "Loss of Me", amusingly results from a bit of Engrish. It's actually a really fitting title for Beatrix, given who she is and her storyline.
Recently we reported that Final Fantasy XIV’s development team just released some screenshots for the PS3 version. Now, producer Naoki Yoshida and UI developer Hiroshi Minagawa released more details about the PS3 version and its development to a Japanese news site, as well as information on new content for A Realm Reborn. An intrepid translator from the FFXIV forums provided an unofficial translation of the lengthy interview here and here. It is long and often quite technical, so here’s the significant points that I saw:
According to Yoshida, the PS3 version is about 80% done, with mostly technical tweaks to go. The PS3 graphics settings are planned to be comparable to medium settings on the PC version, which is as high as they can go on a PS3 MMORPG as big as FFXIV. It will likely not ever be possible to have a full HD display on the PS3 version.
Minagawa and Yoshi-P both commented on changes to the UI and further development of the PS3 version. A lot of the changes to the UI are based on applying a global standard for MMO controls, at least to the keyboard and mouse. There will

The PS3 version of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is still alive and kicking! Square Enix just released some screenshots on their blog for the PS3 version of this game! With this new reveal they wanted to show off the UI, that's user interface for all those who don't know. They are keen on keeping players happy this time around so the first step is to allow players to highly customize their UIs. You can disable, enable, re-position what you want.
They truly wanted the PS3 gamer to feel more on par with the PC when it came to graphics. Pushing PS3 through its paces, it will be just as graphically gorgeous as its PC
