• Rue's Walkthrough

    Beginning

    Bosses:

    • Blood & Smokey
    • Nightmare

Poor Rue's lost his adopted sister AND he has to wear a dorky hat! He's just got the worst luck in the world. In this story, Rue will be looking for the relic to revive Claire, the girl who's taken care of him all of these years. He arrives in Carona, a very small town with a few inhabitants. Outside the Inn is a blonde woman worrying about Elena. Explore the town for a bit, then go to the forest to find her.

The first time entering the forest you'll undergo a short tutorial. Continue on, and Rue sees the missing girl Elena being mugged by bandits. Transform into a Pollywog to avoid suspicion, then sneak up to them. I like to hit Smokey, because he'll say something along the lines of "B-bro! He bit me!" even when using Tail Slap instead of Bite.

First boss fight, yay! As soon as the battle starts, hold down Square and transform into Rue again, because they come at you pretty fast, and that weak little Pollywog isn't going to do any good. Just keep running at them and mashing the X button like crazy, and if they knock Rue down, use the Horizontal Slash as he gets up.

After Blood and Smokey run away like little pansies, Elena tells Rue that her parents are also in search of the Relic (I have no idea why they put the brackets around the word relic every time). If you beat Elena to them, she gives Rue a Silver Coin! You can cheat by transforming into a Saber Tiger, then turning back into Rue JUST before you reach the end of the area (if you're still a Saber Tiger when you do reach the end, you won't get the coin because you're a cheater). After getting the shiny coin, Rue meets Mira and Klaus, Elena's parents. They tell him everything they know about the relic, and about the Atelier that Klaus broke his ankle trying to get to.

There's a bunch of Stingers and Mandolas ahead. The Stingers may look cute, but they're a real pain. They don't do much damage, but they like to knock Rue on his back a lot. It's a nice coin to have, though, plus it's fun to roll around with that Spike attack.

Once you drop back down in the forest, there's a wall. Go up to the wall and press X, and two Gargoyles will appear. Fight them off and grab the coin, then transform into one. Jump on the perch across from the statue, and a giant staircase will appear (This was much easier than what you have to do on Mint's story!). Use the healing spring before going up stairs if necessary, because there's another boss fight on the way.

Finally Rue reaches Cadmon's Atelier!!!! Unfortunately Nightmare, the guardian-horse thingy, doesn't want him to come in. He has some pretty devastating attacks, but they are fairly easy to avoid. Run around the Atelier until he jumps. As soon as the pink aura around him fades, hit him a few times and run away. If you don't get away fast enough, he'll turn around and toss Rue clear to the other side of the Atelier. Basically this battle is hit-run-hit-run. You should have no problem doing this with Rue, but if you want to transform into a Saber Tiger, it should be a little easier to avoid the Nightmare's attacks.

Now that that's over, go into the Atelier and nab you some treasure. There should be three of them in all, one of them outside if you're having trouble finding it. When you get the treasure, check the huge vault in the middle of the room. It's about that time that Klaus comes by to help Rue out with that vault. Elena calls his attention to the Pollywog outside the Atelier, and no, you can't do anything with it. Disappointing, I know. Just head back in and Klaus'll be done. Mint introduces herself to Rue and Klaus in a very...unique...way and ends up hurting herself (AHAHAHA!). When Rue's all done at the Atelier, you can go back to Carona, yay!

The innkeeper is so grateful for bringing back Elena that you get to stay there for free! Unfortunately, it's the only place in the game you can save (with the exception of Mel's Atelier and the last dungeon). Heal and save if you need to, and talk to Klaus. He tells Rue about another Atelier in the Underground Ruins, but before you go there you should take the time to visit the shops and sell the items you just got.

There are two shops in Carona, one sells equipment, and the other sells stat boosters. The shop with the stat boosters are rediculously expensive, and I don't reccomend going there. At the equipment shop, there's new equipment nearly every time you complete a dungeon. The game will be a lot easier if you keep up. An easy way to get money is to sell monster coins or items, or fight Rod in the grass fields when you get stronger.

    Underground Mystery

    Bosses:

    • Skull Beast
    • Duke

Navigating through the ruins is tricky, but once you know the way it's quite simple. One thing you must remember is that you are NOT going in circles! Never, ever go backwards because it is very confusing. Just go right, left, right, left, until you hear running water. Take a right and Rue comes to a waterfall and a Pollywog. Repeat the cycle again, taking you to an identical waterfall and Pollywog. Do the right, left, right, left, deal again until you have to jump over some walls that are shorter than the others. Go left, and there will be another waterfall that's slightly different than the others. Jump down the hole, and tranform into a Pollywog. Get the platforms and when you reach an area with ice, transform into a Gudon to melt it. If you can melt the ice blocks beyond the platform, there is a treasure chest containing Red Wine. If Rue doesn't enough MP now, you can use up his MP on some of the King Ants outside to increase how much he can hold. Incidentally, you may have to come back at a later time to be able to melt the ice.

Once you have all of the platforms, go back into the room Rue fell in before and jump on all of them from right to left to activate them. Jump down another hole and go right to find Mint and a huge boulder. Keep talking to her until the boulder starts to roll. Try to avoid the falling debris, because they'll slow you down and they hurt (but you knew that). Just run to the area on the left where Rue came in to avoid the boulder. If you go all the way to the right, waaaay waaay over there, past the spot where the boulder was, you'll find a healing spring! The boulder knocked down the wall that was in the way before, so you can proceed.

Jump on the flashing platforms, and try not to fall in the water because you'll lose health and you have a boss fight up ahead. Grab the Legendary Sword (do NOT sell it, for the love of God! You can't use it until towards the end of the game, but it'll be worth it). No, Rue can't equip it. One, it's a kitchen knife, two, you can't equip weapons in this game, three, why would you want to? I mean, the Arc Edge is soooo much cooler than a lame kitchen knife!

Go into the next room, and big surprise! A guardian! He's pretty easy to beat, just hop around and dodge his attacks until he gets tired, then hit him. Don't try hitting him before then, it won't do any good. When you finally get into Elroy's Atelier, there's some nice items waiting for you. There's a Tiara, a Cube, and some Coin of Life. There is also a healing area in one of these rooms. There's a boss fight coming up, so you might want to use it (you didn't think you were done after that easy guardian, did you?).

Heading back, you'll meet Belle and Duke. Duke's a tough opponent, so just jump away from his attacks the best you can, then attack him from behind. While Rue was fighting, unfortunately, Belle stole the Tiara! Rue wouldn't have looked that good in it, but still, it was better than that silly hat, right? While you chase down Belle and Duke, the Skull Beast confronts you again. You don't have time for him, so just hit him once and move on.

He's not done with you, though! Just stick to the inside part of the stair case and climb up as fast as you can. Don't worry about falling objects, they hurt a lot less than the Skull Beast, so just endure them and stick to the inside. It's a lot easier if you have the Saber Tooth coin still, but you should be able to do it with plain ol' Rue no problem.

When you get back to Carona, show Klaus the Cube and sell any stones you have obtained. You can sell the Red Wine to Tonio, Hobbs, or Marcum. Marcum's initial offer is 2,000G. Refuse his offer and he'll double it. Refuse it again, and he gives up. Talk to him a third time and he changes his mind and offers you even more money. This is the most he'll offer so you should take it. You can give it to Hobbs as a gift, and he'll lower his prices from 30,000G to 5,000G. The Red Wine sells for 800G at Tonio's shop.

    Mel's Atelier

    Bosses:

    • Blood & Smokey
    • Duke

Oh, goodie...time for what many consider to be the most annoying part of the game! Mel isn't going to be home when Rue gets to her Atelier, so while you wait, you may as well play with the Poppel Purrels, right? The minigames are the annoying type that are so simple, yet you keep screwing up every time. You just need to time your jumps oh-so-perfectly, so that you don't fall into infinity (it sometimes helps to clear monsters out of the way. I know they're cute, but you have to). It's harder than it sounds, trust me. On the bright side, if there's enough time left over, you can try for some coin of life by playing a bonus game!

After you've done all three minigames, Mel returns home. In return for information on the Cube, she wants Rue to find her missing Poppel Purrel. You'll find the adorable little guy in Carona Forest, being mugged by Blood and Smokey. Just use the same strategy you did the first time, they're not much stronger than last time. It's late, so take a nap at the Inn, then go back to Mel's for the information about that mysterious Cube.

Before Rue gets her report, Mel asks a question that leads you into a cutscene about Rue's past. We finally find out why he wears that rediculous hat! Mint and Elena come in as Rue leaves, so Elena comes along with him. They meet Duke again, wearing a silly star costume. Don't be fooled! Just because is costume is very...bright...doesn't make him any weaker! You can't hit him until he's fallen down. Be very carful if he starts to spin, if you get hit it will be very difficult to get back up. Just be sure there's enough HP left over when you defeat him. He'll go high up in the sky and fall on Rue, and it's difficult to dodge.

When that whole fiasco is over, Rue can finally go back to Klaus and tell him about the Cube. Rue and Klaus open up the cube and out comes Prima Doll! You're now one giant step closer to getting the relic! In order to restore Prima Doll to his former self, he needs some items. You need earrings, two sollerets, two gauntlets, phantomite to make an amulet, and the tiara that was stolen by Belle. Mint will go to the Gamul Forest, and Rue will go to the haunted atelier. This is one of the biggest differences in the two stories.

    Haunted Temple

    Bosses:

    • Chimera (x3)
    • Duke
    • Trap Master
    • Blood and Smokey
    • Gorutan

Oooh, the Ghost Temple, very spooky! This place is a little tricky, and you'll be transforming a lot. I hope you bought the latest belt and bracer! If you find that Rue can't clear a jump, chances are he needs a Saber Tiger coin to jump further, or an Ootang coin to jump higher. If you don't have them, there are rooms in the temple with those monsters. Navigate your way through until you reach the guardian, and be careful of falling objects! Rue will have to fight Chimera three times in this dungeon and he learns a new trick each time. The first time is fairly simple, just dodge and hit as always. The second time he learns to breathe fire, and hits pretty hard. The third time he learns a lightning attack; just run around like crazy to avoid it. Wait until he's open and mash that X button!

When Rue's fought the Chimera three times, he gets to go through the door that was previously locked. It's wide open and there's fresh footprints! Rue sees a shadow and chases after it. He raises the Arc Edge, rushes at it, and nearly slashes Elena! He gets to walk her home, yay! Unfortunately the door's locked again, so he has to take her with him to get the last gauntlet. Eventually, he and Elena are separated. Go into a room with Puppets, a Spector and a teleportation pad. Get rid of the monsters, then activate the teleportation pad by transorming into a Puppet. The Puppets are taking Elena; go back until you see a shaking door. Rescue Elena, and now Rue can go forward to face Duke.

Be very careful not to hit the objects in the room. They will explode. Lure Duke near the things in the room, so he'll blow them up himself. After he's cleared most of the room, there is now space to attack without worrying about the surroundings going asplodey. When he's all worn out, the walls start closing in on everyone! You could mash the X button and destroy the door, or you can just wait and view a very funny cutscene without consequence.

Back in Carona, Blood and Smokey challenge you formally this time. You may go and face them now, or you may wait until later. They've brought help this time! You must defeat Trap Master before beating the crap out of the thugs again. Absolutely do not jump on flashing platforms, or Rue goes boom! If there's a shadow, that means a giant spikey ball is going to fall there. The best way to attack Trap Master is to stand on the edge of a platform adjacent to him, and slash away. It isn't necessary to actually be on the same platform as him. Whether you win or lose, it doesn't matter; you won't be taken to the Continue Screen. When you're finished with Trap Master, fight Blood and Smokey just the same as before. They haven't learned anything new.

Next on the list is the Phantomite used in making the Amulet. Mint's too chicken to go to Raging Mountain, so Rue must go himself.

    Haunted Temple

    Bosses:

    • Duke and Hexagon
    • Belle
    • Wylaf

In Raging Mountain, there are boulders blocking your path. To smash these, you need the Bubba coin. A Bubba can be found in the first area if you drop down the side. Progressing forward, you meet Belle and Duke...again. Joy. This time they brought a machine to help them out. You must fight Belle on the Hexagon and Duke at the same time. First, eliminate Duke. If the Hexagon gets close to Rue, jump out of the way! It's most devastating attack, grabbing Rue and tossing him high in the air, is very easy to dodge. To defeat the Hexagon, you must wait until it gets closer, then jump up and strike Belle. She'll fight you on her own after Duke and the Hexagon have been defeated. Move to the side or jump to avoid her spells, then hit her when she's open.

Unfortunately, you still haven't got the Tiara they stole. Heal up at the spring and grab the Legendary Shield, then confront Wylaf. You'll only need to reduce his HP by about half. His attacks are difficult to dodge. If you see swirling dust, stay away from it. You want to defeat him as quickly as possible because whenever he breathes fire, a little bit stays on the field for the rest of the battle. After awhile, it becomes difficult to move around. Carefully avoid him, then wait until he lands to attack. When he asks you to withdraw your weapon, you can keep still and wait for him to give up the phantomite, or you can attack him and see what happens. Choosing the latter option takes you to the continue screen.

Back in Carona, Mint returns with the Tiara. How she got the Tiara while Belle and Duke were fighting Rue is anyone's guess.

Bond With Prima -- Lake Ruins

    Bosses:

    • Gorutan
    • Rod

Prima Doll becomes his old self again when the items are on him at last. Isn't he just adorable? He gets so excited he burns out all of his energy, and Rue has to go see Mel to find a solution. In order to restore Prima's energy, Rue must transform into Gorutan and zap him; of course, he has to defeat him to get his power. Gorutan two main attacks. One where he shoots lightning, and one where he zaps. To avoid the chase lightning, run around him until he stops. When the stars circling around him expand, that's when you attack. Hit him twice, then run to avoid the lightning bolt. Repeat this cycle until he's defeated. Unfortunately, you can never transform into Gorutan during actual gameplay. In fact, there's no other lightning elemented monster until the last dungeon.

When Rue comes back and zaps Prima, Klaus still needs to work on the amulet. If you haven't fought Blood and Smokey yet, you must do that now to progress the story. Klaus is still working on the amulet, so why not take Prima for a walk? If you talk to Marcum, he'll give you 50G. Wanna see something cool? Go to the Grass Fields and talk to Johnny Wolf. He'll follow Rue and Prima around. Talk to Rod a few times and he joins, too! Run around the field a bit and enjoy your little train. When you're all done go to the Lakeside and return to Carona.

Klaus is finally done with that amulet! You know what that means, Relic Time! In order to get to the ruins, Rue needs the help of Rod's boat. He lets him ride it on one condition; Rue must defeat him in battle. This time he's got a new weapon, so it's a little harder. Attack him when his weapon is down, and if it starts spinning, run away. Getting caught in that will lower Rue's defense. Even if you lose, Mira bribes Rod with some lunch so it's no big deal. Might hurt your pride a little, though.

Just as Prima's breaking the seal at the Lake Ruins, Princess Maya and her escort come to stop him. Luckily Mint comes by with Belle & Duke to save Rue, but end up leaving Prima behind. Poor little guy...

Go back to the Tavern when you get to Carona and have yourself a little cry as you see another cutscene about Rue's past.

    Maya's Arrival

    Bosses:

    • Psycho Master
    • Doll Master
    • Atenacius

In the middle of the night, Rue is awakened by...could it be? Claire! Rue tries to follow her around, but she keeps disappearing. Follow her to the Tavern, Main Square, Docks, Grass Fields, and then the Church. Psycho Master lifts her up in the air, and you must fight him.

Two very important things to remember when fighting Psycho master: 1. Never EVER attack him head on. Hit him from behind. 2. If he starts floating and following Rue around, RUN! RUN FOR YOU LIFE! His worst attack is used when you hit him from the front or sides, or when he starts floating and catches up to you. Avoid jumping to hit him, or the Horizontal Slash. They'll make him fall over and it's much easier to hit him when he's upright.

Head over to Maya's Tower like a good boy. Don't try to leave once you get in, you'll lose health. There's several Gold Coins and the Legendary Helmet in this tower, try not to miss them. Make your way up until you find Claire! Wait a sec...that's not Claire! It's Mode Master, playing mean tricks on Rue. Doll Master comes along and reveals his true form! The Arm of Death...what a shocking development! He and Rue fight, but don't even bother, you can't beat him. He forces Rue to destroy the Book of Cosmos, and Rue and Maya are transported inside. Atenacious becomes enraged when he sees the gem on Rue's forehead, and they do battle. Use the Arc Edge to block attacks from his vicious facial hair, then attack him. When he goes far away, he likes to shoot stuff at you while you're jumping towards him, so look out. After you beat him, you see a long, long, cutscene revealing what Rue truly is.

    Aim for the Sky

    Bosses:

    • Trap Master
    • Mode Master

Ooooh, floaty thingy in the sky! How is Rue ever going to get up there? Time to pay Wylaf a visit. As always, Doll Master is one step ahead of you and has sent Trap Master and Mode Master to get in your way. Fight Trap Master just as you did the first time, avoiding shadows and flashing platforms. Mode Master is just as easy. It's so unfair how she can transform into Behemoth and Rue can't! CHEATER! Avoid her attacks carefully when she's transformed into faster monsters, then attack her when you see an opening.

    Soar into Battle

    Bosses:

    • Psycho Master
    • Nightmare
    • Skull Beast
    • Chimera
    • Doll Master
    • Evening Dew
    • Valen

This is the last dungeon so get ready! Buy the Brave Belt and Bracer, do all of the sidequests, pay small amounts of money to the Church for Bronze Coins, etc. The monster coins from Maya's Tower pay quite nicely if you're short on cash. Go around town and say your goodbyes, and then go to Mel's for a cutscene that goes many ways.

When you think you're ready, go on to Valen's Fortress (Oh, what beautiful music~). Arena I is pretty simple...just go through and defeat the Gargoyles and warp around until you find the exit. Arena II has obstacles in the way. Go to the last portal, and get a Bubba coin. Break the giant block and defeat the Hellhound in the middle warp pad. Melt the ice and warp, then put out the fire blocking the exit. Arena III is full of Jinns, one of the best monsters for the Transformation ability. This one is a little easier. All you gotta do is run around and defeat Jinns. Tranform into Jinn for Arena IV to defeat the Behemoths. After you've killed them all, go back to where you started, and use the save point.

This next room is even easier. Blow out one of the flames and relight it, then go to each of the rooms and make sure the two middle flames are lit. One of the rooms has a smaller flame, turn into Jin and blow on it. When you get an orb, just take it to where you came in, and when you get all four be ready to face Psycho Master. Use the same tactics you used before, avoiding his floaty attack and hitting him in the back. Be careful not to touch the fence.

The Cursed Crossways take you to many of the enemies you've faced before. You only need to face the Guardians again to move on. They have the same stats you did the first time you faced them, so this should be a piece o' cake. Save, heal, then go face Doll Master for the last time.

This is a very tough battle, and to win you have to learn how to dodge his attacks. If you see him charge at you, jump to the side! This is his worst attack, and it can take a good 15HP from you. His second worst attack is a black ball similar to Mint's Graviton spell, one ball can hit you up to five times. Keep a good distance from him when he casts it. When his HP is low, don't jump if you can help it. He likes to use an attack that sucks you in toward him, and it works much faster if you're airborne. Now that you've defeated Doll Master, it's time to go get that relic and revive Claire!

Unfortunately, Valen has other plans! The Morning Dew protects Valen as the Evening Dew attacks. To defeat Valen, you must circle around the Dewprism until you're in front of him. Jump up and hit him before he moves again. Don't stay too far from the Evening Dew, when he starts to spin in place, he's either healing the Morning Dew or launching an attack that's impossible to dodge. When you get close enough to him, mash the X button until he knocks you down. It's much easier to get to Valen when the Evening Dew is gone, but be quick because he'll come back. If you're low on HP try and banish the Evening Dew for a blue potion. The potion he drops heals a lot.

Final Battle!!!! Oh my God it's the end! This is one of the easiest fights in the game, believe it or not. Wait until he goes in the air directly in front of you and spits out an attack. Use the Arc Edge to block, then hit him before he moves. You just have to do this maybe five times. Easy right?

    THE END!

Be sure to wait until after the credits and save your game. Going through both Rue's and Mint's story will give you a bonus ending and a New Game Plus feature.
