I was under the impression that the season was universally-reviled among book readers. I was surprised when the founders of westeros.org even came out hating it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjEs9jwf9PY); they actually produce works with George and a lot of their livelihood is tied to having a healthy relationship with the show's cast and crew.
I think even you'll admit the Qarth scenes were quite silly. The writing and acting noticeably regressed. Tyrion crying in Shae's arms at the end of the season was so reminiscent of his feinted confession in the Vale in season 1 that I thought Dinklage was purposefully trying to get fired from the show. They're omitting important, cherished scenes from the book to produce tangential content that's boring at best and cringe-worthy at worst. But overall, when George RR Martin handles sexuality and violence more subtly than you do, there's a very serious problem here.

I was under the impression that the season was universally-reviled among book readers.
It wasn't as good as the first season, shows of this nature typically aren't, but it was by no means bad. There were some fairly weak parts in the overall season, but it sort of matches up with the books in those aspects. The books aren't particularly strong all of the time and Martin seriously isn't one of the greatest authors of our, or any, time. Overall, the season was vastly superior than most of the things that are on television and, even when not comparing it to other things currently on, still pretty damn good.
Also, the parts that take place in Qarth were boring and tedious in the books as well.
As far as the people behind westeros.org disliking it, I can't really take them seriously. Who the hell stacks books like that on bookshelves?

I'm (too) slowly coming to the realization that Bolivar has a controversial opinion about damn near everything.
The only people who were upset by the second season have completely unrealistic expectations for adaptations from one format to another. The series, as a whole, remains one of the best book to film (movie or television) adaptations ever. It's hardly perfect, but adaptations never are. For what it is, the show is phenomenal.
Also, Dany's storyline is the worst part of the books. It's plodding, dull, and is only ever redeemed by one awesome scene at the end of each book. Otherwise, Dany spends an awful lot of time doing or saying a lot of stupid things. I will never understand why one cool chapter per book seems to make everyone forget how god awful the majority of the other ones are.

Danerys is a slow story to take off mostly because there's a lot of maturing both her and her dragons need to do. However I can firmly see that once that story arc is near completion (which won't be until the very end of the saga tbh) it could become one of the most interesting out there.
Personally looking forwards to seeing the next instalments of Jaime's story since he starts becoming a much deeper character in the 3rd book onwards. I am especially curious to see the sword that they have made for his return, the one forged from Ice's blade.

I know there's a sweet spot. There's a day: If I were to start S1E1 on that day, everything would line up perfectly and I'd finish the rewatch just as the new season begins and the new season would be perfect, better than either of the first two seasons, and Joffrey Lannister* would somehow die in every episode, and Drogo WOULD return, reincarnated as a smurfing horse-dragon, and Ygritte would step out of the TV and be my, uh, spearwife, or hell, I don't give a trout, I'd be her spearwife, whatever she wants, and during the end credits of season 3 Martin would appear and announce he's finished all the rest of the books in the series ahead of time, and there's 100 more, each one more awesome than the rest, and the show's been renewed for all perpetuity and will never end.

I'm sorry, but if you modestly survey fan reaction, it really isn't all that controversial, nor is it the adaptation that has disappointed so many.
And I understand Dany is the most polarizing character in the book but I'm surprised you actually think she's stupid. A lot of her story is her outwitting the seemingly more powerful people around her to the point she's become a true Targaryen conqueror in fact and name. I personally didn't find it boring since it's the foreign contrast to Westeros and where we get to learn more about Rhaegar Targaryen who is not only one of the most fascinating characters in the story, probably Jon Snow's father, and the epicenter of all the story's mysteries, but everything written about him is building up to this unbearably-anticipated plot twist (which ironically for this discussion is somethingalso completely abandoned by the show.)
Added a spoiler tag because, although very vague, I think it might bother non-readers. And I know a lot of non-readers who plug their ears and don't want to know the popular fan theory about Jon's parentage. -Shlup

When, except for her purchase of the Unsullied, has Dany ever won anything by virtue of deception or intellect? She spends a great deal more time stubbornly defending the less fortunate at her own expense and making decisions based on emotional outbursts. Each book she appears in so far features a story arch in which she spends several chapters passively letting others plot and scheme around her, until she screws up and gets stuck in a bind, and then somehow manages to fix that mistake because DRAGONS.
Until A Dance with Dragons, I had begun to believe that the justification for Dany's one-track-mindedness had been because she, like her father before her, was mad, and the only reason the reader didn't know it was because she had not featured in any chapter except those from her own point of view. Then we got some POV chapters from characters who have interacted with her, and none of them suggested anything of the sort.

When she treated with the sellsword captains to discern which could turn the battle in her favor, then caught the Yunkish enemy unawares (much like Robb did at the forks). Then she utilized her sellswords' experience again by having them infiltrate Meereen and capture the city in a ridiculously short amount of time. I think it was noted how fast she pulled it off and how relatively little looting/rioting there was in its wake. She's actually been a pretty good strategist in A Storm of Swords. Going back to AGoT, she also won over the Khalasar and was accepted as one of their own (of course she didn't understand that most would leave once Drogo did). In A Clash of Kings she was also able to bring everyone out of the Red Waste by utilizing her bloodriders in the way most likely to bring about success. I know A Dance with Dragons makes it kind of tough to get through her sitting around and waiting, but I think marrying Hizdahr might've actually been the best move if it wasn't for the Drogon incident. I really don't think he's the Harpy.
I actually think you might be right about your second point, though. IMO she's being built up as the series antagonist because almost everything she's done has lead to the death and suffering of a huge amount of people.

A bunch of reasons.
The problem is that Dany is the one putting herself in these situations. She brings competent people to her cause by virtue of her heritage and dragons alone. She's the one who decided to cross the Red Wastes with a company of weak and elderly without direction. It was smart to use her bloodriders as scouts, but you can't neglect that she put herself in that situation in the first place. Each victory credits a defeat: she did not properly understand her role in the Khalasar, and so was put in a terrible situation due to it. When she sacked Astapor, she left it in a state where it very quickly degenerated into a civil war until it was conquered by her enemies. Dany's best moments only come when she's put herself in a really bad situation and manages to dig herself (or, often, have someone else dig her) out.

She's making really complicated decisions though. And, yeah, she's surrounded by competent people, but very few of them are trustworthy--most are just out for their own power.
For a teenage girl who spent her whole life in hiding and being told her bitchbaby brother is The Dragon, I think she's doing very well. Give a girl some credit! For most of ADWD she's sitting in one place trying to move carefully, but damn if none of her options don't have really shitty consequences.

I'm going to be surprised if they get to that scene this season. As far as I remember it was about two-thirds of the way through the book. On the other hand I suppose it's possible they'll screw with chronology and leave it as the cliffhanger for season four.
Bunny
02-24-2013, 04:41 PM
There are so many places that the third season can stop as a cliff hanger. I am of the opinion that it will stop with Jon Snow's naming as the Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. It isn't as great of an ending as RW but I think it would be sufficient enough if done right. Though I'm not sure where each event falls into place in the book, since it has been awhile since I have read them. I am less concerned about following the books (individually, anyway) to the letter and more concerned about them making the series good.
The castle in the first picture is either Storm's End or Dragonstone. It looks like it could be either of them, since they have a lot in common. I'm guessing Dragonstone though.

Man, I REALLY hope we get to see RW this year. I think it'd make a pretty climatic cliff-ending. They could even end it where it looks like Arya is killed, like the chapter did in the book. She's a fan favourite, so hooo trout, people would be going crazy.

Given that Jon becomes Lord Commander in his very last chapter, I find ending the season there unlikely. I imagine the last we'll see of Jon Snow this season is when he escapes from the Wildlings south of the Wall. If they pass up the opportunity to end this season with the Red Wedding, I'll be stunned.

It sounds like some of the fault is in the microphone itself because there is a rumbling that appears to be a result of there being too much sound for the microphone to handle, but maybe turning the volume down will help. See if this (http://www.eightforums.com/sound-audio/12338-how-boost-mic-windows.html) is helpful for changing mic levels.

I think it'd be one hell of an ending. Since there's a good portion of people who watch the show that do not read the books, I can just imagine Reddit now...
Whenever I find out that somebody is reading A Song of Ice and Fire, I start saying "Red Wedding," without explaining any of it. My friend did this to me when I was first reading the series in high school, and even knowing that something big was going to happen, my mind damn near exploded. I saw it coming, I knew that as soon as Robb named Jon his heir that he wouldn't be around much longer. But damn. God damn.

The castle in the picture people were debating earlier? That would be one of two places, neither are Dragonstone.
First option (and possibly the most likely answer) Storms End. Second option is it's Casterly Rock. It's too early for Littlefinger's Castle if I recall correctly.

Rantz

Supposedly. It kind of makes sense - my copy of Storm of Swords is in two parts, and each part is about as thick as the previous books.
The Man
03-02-2013, 05:57 PM
It's not as long as the previous two books combined, but a lot more happens in it, because Martin doesn't have to spend as much time introducing new characters. So yeah, I can see why they'd need two whole seasons to tell it. However, judging from the episode titles it doesn't look like they're going to stop halfway through the book, or else they're going to move some material around. Some of the material appears to come from more than halfway through.
Freya
03-02-2013, 07:05 PM
I'm assuming they are not just going book by book now. Last season had stuff from SoS. Since the way the further books are written they all kinda happen at the same time just well different books. So I can see how the season's aren't so much book by book anymore but event by event. So two seasons for one "book" sounds more realistic. This season will have stuff from the future books as well as SoS which gives credence for the need for more seasons.
The Man
03-03-2013, 12:24 AM
Yeah, I think they're trying to make the events as chronological as possible. The events in the books weren't always chronological.

They're actually going to show things that happen/are explained in A Dance with Dragons, so as others suggested, the book to show chronology has pretty much come and gone. It might be a good idea to start introducing some of the minor POV characters who have significance at this point to cut down on how many roles you have like having
Oberyn bring Arianne with him instead of Ellaria Sand.

They're going to start mixing up the storyline a lot more this season. They started this last season, but they said this season they'll continue to move Jaime's storyline up. I don't remember exactly what else they mix around. Assuming you're more concerned about the book spoiling the show than vice versa, I don't imagine it'd be a problem to read along with the season.

Having only watched one episode, I do wish Dany had some backbone. It was sort of weird just seeing her look nervous scared for what seemed like forever (basically every scene she was in)
I'm very shocked at the amount of nudity in the programme though. I've never really seen a T.V series when there's so many breasts flying around :p

I've just finished Season One! Gonna have to download Season Two at some point but if I'm quick, I might just catch up in time for Season Three. I essentially watched Episodes 6-10 right through in a marathon watch.
My main thoughts on the events of Season One:
I thought Dany was somewhat stupid letting that witch treat Drogo though. I mean, that witch's entire village got sacked, and she got raped. What better way to get revenge than using blood magic to cripple Drogo and kill Dany's unborn child?
I'm always unsure with Littlefinger.. One minute he's helping Eddard, the other minute he's turning on him. Who exactly does he serve?
I can't stand any of the Lannisters except for Tyrion. It's clear that they wanted to portray them mostly as just right antagonists. Jaime always looks smug, Cersei is often annoying and conspiring and Joffrey is a right bastard. Tyrion however, is just lovely with his sarcasm and wit. I always look forward to seeing his character and he's played very well.
I'm waiting for Theon to turn his back on the Starks. He appears loyal, but I can sense he will turn soon.
And that's about it. I feel I'm going to enjoy season two.

I believe that's exactly how you're supposed to feel. Could you imagine anyone liking Joffrey?

I went to the premiere event in San Francisco last night, which was pretty cool! Some of the cast were there, and it was in this swank theater.
I think the first episode of the season has the same problem S2's premiere does--to many stories to cover, not enough time--but it's solid, and the production values have definitely been bumped up. There's a great sense of scale in some establishing shots that I hope stays consistent throughout the season.
Also, my roommate took some pictures at the event with his fancy DSLR. Here's a link (http://www.flickr.com/photos/93887706@N07/sets/72157633046517231/), but I'll post a couple of my faves.
We were sitting two rows behind the castmembers who came to the premiere.

Do you guys think anything in season 3 has the capacity to top Blackwater? In addition to being an incredible hour of television, I think it highlighted the show's biggest weakness--the way it jumps around from character to character really makes it difficult to tell a satisfying story arc within an episode. Most shows have an A plotline and a B plotline--maybe a C plotline--but for Game of Thrones it's probably at least four per normal episode. Blackwater's focus was so perfectly paced and gripping by comparison, and the finale was such a mess trying to wrap everything up after it.

Absolutely. Storm of Swords has the capacity to be two of the best seasons of television ever and has a wealth of entertaining and engaging plots to choose from. Furthermore, the entire reason the series was created was to get to a single scene in Storm of Swords. The entire goal of Beinoff and Weiss when they adapted the series was to get to season three.
Regarding the lack of the "plot A, plot B" that most series go by, I would argue that Game of Thrones goes by the same method, albeit in a less direct way. The story lines in Westeros could be seen as plot A, Dany's story is plot B, and perhaps the story Beyond the Wall would be plot C. I do not really think that the large cast is holding the series back in any way other than some people want more focus on individual characters and areas rather than the jumping around that is required for the show. I think that plagues viewers more than readers though, as the readers tend to have more experience with the characters and know how the story is going to flesh out moreso, so they are more forgiving because they know the larger plot.

Knowing what's going to happen this season, absolutely. But even so, a lot of my favorite things from the show don't come from tight-knit episodes, it's scenes with good acting and emotion, like Robert's conversation with Cersei in season 1 or watching Alfie Allen bring Theon's descent to life in season 2.
Other HBO shows like The Wire and The Sopranos (http://itre.cis.upenn.edu/~myl/languagelog/archives/002112.html) handled arguably more plot threads than Game of Thrones and were able to get better at it as time went on. I'm sure the show will do the same. They have to, or else the plot will implode on itself once the other character groups in A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons are brought in.
If you're asking if there will be an episode that rivals the success that Blackwater formula, most definitely. That episode handled it the same way the book did - switching the perspectives from Sansa to Tyrion to Davos and back again. There's a few other segments like that which will probably be encapsuled in an episode, one of which from the upcoming book that George is reading right now at panels.

Status update: I'm now rather deep into Season Two. I've watched Episode Four now, and very surprised by that Shadow creature birthed by the Red Priestess. Quite surprising, though I can piece together what's going to happen next...
Loving the second season so far, particularly the animosity between Yara and Theon. Despite being siblings, I enjoy the obvious ill feeling of each other.
I've lost abit of favour with The Wall segments. The whole segment at Caster's keep is slightly boring if you ask me. It's clear that the focus isn't on them, at least during the episodes I've watched. So far, Dany's storyline is also on a bit of a backburner too. I'm sure they will be refocused during the second half of the season.
Still, enjoying it.
Dany's storyline never recovers.
Also, Azar--
If this season and next season aren't the two best seasons, then the screenwriters/actors completely butchered the amazing source material they had to work with. You think Blackwater was good? You ain't seen nothin' yet.

I've read read all the books. I don't think the Blackwater is the pinnacle of the story, but it is far and away the best episode of the tv adaptation up to this point. I honestly think it's one of the best episodes of any TV series I've ever seen, period, up there with The Body from Buffy, The Constant from Lost, Deadwood or Rome at their best, etc. and I don't think any other episodes in season 1 or season 2 of GoT come close to that honor because, again, a lot of them don't work that well as standalone episodes.
There's a lot going into making Blackwater so good. Lena Headey really nailing Cersei, which she hadn't really done through a lot of the series. Peter Dinklage being amazing. The Hound coming forward as a deeper character than we get to see up to that point. Neil Marshall (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0551076/?ref_=tt_ov_dr) directing the episode. It's really, really well shot, the localized story gives scenes more time to play out and build up tension, and I dunno, someone's probably written an essay about all the ways that episode kinda dongs on the rest of the show.
I feel like the Red Wedding is the only part of this season they could give similar treatment, and even then sticking on that one storyline for an hour might be too much.

Yeah, it's the same kind of structure--there's just too much crammed into any given episode for major developments in any story, a lot of the time. And that's okay to an extent--it's expected to be a heavily serialized show, but other shots like Lost did a better job within that formula of still telling really satisfied contained stories with every episode. Honestly, I think Game of Thrones would be better suited to the House of Cards release format than a week-to-week schedule.
Dany's storyline never recovers.
Overall or in the show?
Overall, book and show. I find her story dull, and it's only made worse by a terribly boring and idiotic character.

I forget if it was me and Ouch debating this, but she should be acting pretty deft in quite a few exciting situations this season.
Azar, that's one, I also think there's at least two more from this book, namely the Purple Wedding and the Battle at the Wall (since Sam and Bran things happen at around the same time at the Wall). Granted, they'll both probably be at the end of next season, but I see the latter of the two having a similar Blackwater treatment, especially since they're showing things from Stannis and Melisandre's perspectives.

I'm on a similar page as Sam. I like Dany well enough, but her story is somewhat monotonous. My enjoyment comes from the anticipation of what I know will be happening - or at least what I predict will probably be happening - but I've grown a little tired of all the times he's cried wolf.

bran's plot - didn't see enough of the show to say, prolly way better (sometimes FAR too rushed)
but would you guys concur bran's story REALLY lagged in like, books 2 and so on?
finally he's off to the wall (minor spoiler) but
why is it so protracted, the 3 eyed bird and the flying and jojen reed and meera (is something going to -happen- there?)
finally when the iron maidens or whatever showed up in their skiff militia tried to take over and roose was like 'no way!' at least the whelp (young maiden) tried to help
it's not helping i'm so on-again-off-again with this series.
we need bob ross to appear as Syrio Forel
at least i remembered HIS name, not even a huge character!
