Lots of people seem to expect Dany to be super mature since she's a ruler while forgetting that she's a teenage girl. Teenage girls (and teenage boys) are legendarily stupid. Just because she's a ruler doesn't mean she should be immune. It's honestly a miracle she does as many things right as she does.

Especially since she is a heavily inbred teenage girl.

I actually am quite sympathetic towards Dany actually. I don't quite understand ALL the hate towards her. Sure, her storyline thus far has literally only been "Find ships, find an army, find money" and so far has been very, very dull. But it's not her fault that her storyline is below par. I think Dany's fine. There's more annoying characters in my opinion. Stannis now... I find him insufferable.

I've fully watched Season Two!! Haha! I've caught up. And the premiere over here in England is the 1st of April on Sky Atlantic. Glad that I've caught up in quite a short time. My thoughts on Blackwater was just in one word: epic. Easily the best episode thus far. Poor Tyrion though. He did so much, and got so little.

I watched the Season Two Finale and thought it was better than Season One's finale, by a long mile. My favourite scene in the episode (indeed, perhaps this season) was the scene with Luwin's death, and the boy's reactions. I found that quite sad. I really liked Luwin...

But yeah. Enjoyed Season Two. It was alot less 'political' than Season One. With season one, virtually every episode was taken up with Eddard Stark's investigation. This season brought more battle, bloodshed to the mix.

I've rambled on too much now. But to conclude: cannot wait for season III!

Just because she's a ruler doesn't mean she should be immune. It's honestly a miracle she does as many things right as she does.

People also forget that while she is a Targaryen (which have been more allowing for female rulers), that she was the third child of Aerys II and Rhaella. In other words, she wasn't ever expected to rule and no one bothered to train her as such. Moreover, up-until the events of the first book, it was likely that she would have been Viserys' sister-wife in the Targaryen tradition. Also, the fact that she was essentially raised by Viserys as well since her mother died in childbirth, doesn't bode well for her education, especially given how horrid of a ruler Viserys would have been had he lived. Oh, and she was 14 in the beginning of the novels (I think 16/17 for the TV series). Basically, she was never considered to be a ruler and wasn't trained to be one. Essentially, she had nothing to go on to knowing how to rule, except for the advice of an exiled knight. All she learned as a leader was through trial and error. Let's also factor in the fact that people were half-expecting her to be insane like daddy-dearest as well.

All these facts taken together shows that as a leader, the stacks were not in her favour. Yet, she grows and learns from her mistakes. Hell, if you want to compare her to someone look at Joffrey. He was raised (albeit Cersei played her hand in there as well) since childhood to be king and he's wretched one at that. I'd take Dany over Joffrey anyday. At least Dany tries and resembles a human being in the process.

Yeah, compared to almost every other contender for the throne, Dany is by far the least of many evils. The only possible exception is Robb, who's dead, and shared a lot of the same Honour Before Reason flaws his father did anyway. Then again, after the events of A Dance with Dragons, it is not entirely implausible that Theon might be able to be moulded into a good ruler, but he is so thoroughly broken right now that there is little chance of that happening. And I suppose Sansa has a reasonable chance at becoming an effective ruler too now that Littlefinger is trying to mould her in his image.

The Summoner of Leviathan
03-29-2013, 06:24 AM
I really want to see Varys' whole game plan, because as much as it has become more and more obvious, I think there is much more at play than he is letting on. I honestly am suspicious of Aegon VI; there is evidence to believe he is legit, but then again he appears rather late in the game (pun intended).

I wonder how deep Varys' connections go. He seems to be loyal to House Targaryen but to what extent and to who? Will he try to reconcile Aegon VI and Dany? Or play one against the other? The title of the latest novel almost suggests that given where it comes from in the history of Westeros. What other schemes does he have going and with whom?.

Let's face it the most dangerous characters in regards of playing the game are Varys and Littlefinger. Though I got a feeling Sansa may ultimately play a hand in the latter's downfall.

Isn't Dany still next in line for the throne? Rhaegar may have been the heir to Aerys, but he was never king. Dany is the last child of Aerys, so even though she is female, the true line of succession should be first to her, THEN to Aegon.

I don't think this is a spoiler, as it is talked about in both the show and the book, but go ahead and

I was just thinking this morning...does Dany understand what her father was really like? She keeps talking about being the dragon, and the honour and birthright of the Targaryens, etc etc. Keep in mind, most of the stories she'd heard about the Targaryens and Westeros were from Viserys. The others were from people who wanted to manipulate to see Viserys/Dany on the throne. They're also the same people saying that people are secretly wishing for the Targaryens to come back. (And we as the reader/viewer know this isn't true--at the very least, we never see anything that makes us believe that.)

So, does she really know? If she did, would she be so proud of him? Would she feel that Westeros was still hers, or at least understand why people supported the Usurper?

I figure no, because Dany is a weak, entitled brat who expects everyone to love her. But even still. What do you guys think?

That's not at all how a patriarchal monarchy works. Rhaegar was the heir, and Aegon was his heir. As soon as Rhaegar died, Aegon became the heir to the throne. It does not matter that Rhaegar himself never became king. Viserys only became the heir after Rhaegar's line (the line of Aerys's first son) was extinguished. Aegon's claim as first son of the first son of the king was better than Viserys's claim as second son of the king.

I figure no, because Dany is a weak, entitled brat who expects everyone to love her. But even still. What do you guys think?

You should go back and reread ADwD because those issues are address or attempted to. I get that you don't like Dany but your judgement about her is heavily clouded. It is unlikely Dany expects everyone to like her since up-until her relationship with Khal Drogo, her main human relationship (her brother) was abusive. 14+ years of abuse will do that to you. Moreover, given the situations she has overcome she isn't weak. I will not say she doesn't have flaws, she does. Many of them due to her young age: she's self-righteous, prideful, quick to anger, naive/innocent, among other things. Weak? No. Maybe a little crazy, but not weak. A weak person could not do half the stuff she did.

Also, all her knowledge of her family up-until recently in the series came from her brother, Viserys. Who, as I recall, didn't spend much time with his father. Moreover, I think he was completely removed from the Red Keep towards the end of Aerys the Mad's reign. He didn't get to see his father's fall and as a kid was most definitely kept out of the loop. So yes, Dany was obviously bias about her dad because the only source of information was her brother. It is only later, in her encounters with Selmy Barristan that she gets a much better understanding of the cruelty of her father.

Mostly, it seems like you are projecting Viserys' flaws onto Dany which is severely unfair. Given if you take their leadership and ability to move people to their cause, you can see the Viserys serves more as a foil for the type of ruler Dany is becoming. She may not be the cleverest girl, but she isn't stupid. She saw what her brother's behaviour got him. I am not saying that she isn't without flaws; the books do acknowledge that through other characters. But it is not the picture you are painting.

As for people whispering about the return of the Taragryen to Westeros? It is fair to put some of that on Viserys' conceit. Yet, at the same time it is basically what it appears that Varys is planning by pushing Westeros in ruins and setting it up to be saved by a Targaryen (assuming that is his plan and not just another front of his).

Jinx

She's a brat.

Also, for me, Viserys and Dany are very similar characters. So I feel that their flaws are one and the same. It's just she's too wrapped up in herself and feeling important because of her damn dragons to realize she's battrout insane. Of course, she probably wouldn't either way...I odn't think she'd ever admit to herself she was crazy. But, you get my point.

This really sets up the stage for a joke about Jesus going back to the cave the next day, saying "I don't do Mondays!," and then saying to his disciples, "The Lord commandeth thee to bring me lasagna."

I found that scene very sad, but I also found the death of Maester Luwin in the Godswood equally as sad. Pretty much, both those deaths were quite heartbreaking, and it is really because of those boy's faces.

This, too. I'm pretty impressed with the young actors on this show, overall. Especially considering that they have had few to no previous acting gigs.

It's a shame it wasn't a two hour special really. It felt like one of those episodes that was just putting pieces on the board - which is a bit of a slow way to start off the new season. I may have to rewatch it but there weren't really "omg" moments for me.

I remembered the thing about this show is that it's sometimes a bit disconnected because most characters only get one scene per episode. Heck, no Arya or Bran at all in this one! Not that I mind, I find them both a bit dull. Mind you, I also find Dany dull but I quite enjoyed her section of the episode.

That's the same reaction I had. I thought it would have been a much stronger premiere if they made it 2 hours and we got to see all the characters.

I think for a regular episode it was good. On the bandwagon that it was quiet for a premier.

I loved Winterfell smoking in the opening. Not sure why the showed it, though, since Winterfell wasn't in this episode...

I loved Margaery's scene in Flea Bottom. Like, I know she's ruthless and wants to be queen, but I felt like that was a real moment. And I love that Cersei's scared, because she knows Margaery is winning the love of the people/will win the love of the people.

Despite not liking Dany, her scenes were nice. The dragons! Also, Barristan Selmy is awesome.

Del Murder

It was good for an opener. Agree it should have been longer.

For an episode that focused on some of the more boring storylines (Dany, Jon, Stannis), I liked it.

I think it says here:Game of Thrones producers say season 3 as big as were going to get (http://www.hitfix.com/whats-alan-watching/game-of-thrones-producers-say-season-3-as-big-as-were-going-to-get#mCLaJIPgZQsyEI3y.99)

Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) initially appeared in a few scenes in the season 3 premiere, but the producers felt the episode was getting too crowded and moved her scenes back to the second episode. This wasn't the first time, nor will it be the last, where scenes shot for one episode wind up in another, with the only thing restricting them being the idea that each story thread happens in order, roughly in synch with the others.

So basically, they moved some of her scenes from the first episode to the second.

Really, what HBO should have done is instead of showing the premiere, it should have been just an hour and a half of the Iron Throne.

The UK premiere ended earlier, so I'll give my first thoughts in spoiler format:

- I quite liked Margaery's performance this episode. While I do question her motives behind helping the poor orphans, nonetheless it does show a nicer side to her character than Queen Cersei and further alienates her and make her look uncaring

- I felt for Tyrion this episode. Ostracised by virtually everyone it appears. Even Bronn, while still a friend, is driving a harder bargain than usual.

- I quite liked the introduction to Astapor. During the 'translation' scenes with Dany and that nipple-cutter, I could tell that Dany actually understood the words being spoken, but chose to use a translator anyway while keeping her linguistic skill hidden. Dany must have knew she was being called a whore. It's quite clever actually, because they will think she's a dumb foreigner and speak potentially revealing snippets of information while in her presence. Intriguing I say.

They were speaking Valaryian probably seeing how their in Slavers Bay. Dany grew up on Essos, so she'd probably be taught or have a understanding of the Valaryian language. I think the acting as well made it slightly more obvious as well.

They did a good job reintroducing the characters and letting the audience see where each storyline was at without going a bit to overboard. The exclusion of Arya and Bran was a really good idea, as it would have been a completely clusterfuck had they tried to keep them in there. Sad that Strong Belwas won't be in the third season though.

It wasn't as action packed but it was pretty solid.

I liked the opening to the season just fine. The opening and ending episodes of the seasons seem to be more about setting the stage and resolving the stage. If this were a normal show then the end of season 2 would have ended during the battle on the shore. Probably right as soon as Tyrion got slashed it would fade to black. What will happen? Tune in next season to find out! This is not that sort of show. This episode was more about setting up motivations and the paths people are about to take and that is fine by me.

Also, I am actually really surprised people don't care for Daenerys all that much. Her story I find to be one of the more interesting ones. Her, Jon Snow and Tyrion are the ones that I am most interested in.

Not really. They have 19 hours to do the other events in Storm of Swords and, while there is a significant amount of important events happening in the book, they also have the option (and will likely take the opportunity) to move things into the fifth season, since some of the core characters are missing from that (Dany, Tyrion, etc.) I do not think the Red Wedding is going to have the same episode dedication that the Battle of Blackwater did as it was a relatively quick thing with a strong focus on the various reactions across the realms.

I struggle to read this thread as I never know if the spoiler tags are spoilers for the show that was just on or spoilers for the future of the show (ie, from books or leaks). :( Either way, I'll offer my thoughts on what happened on the show that has just finished: It was alright. I agree it could have been a lot longer, but I think that's mostly me being greedy for the entire series to be released in a day. :p I liked pretty much everything, although the Stannis stuff was eh... if only because I think the red lady is a proper evil bitch and I don't like seeing the good guys lose. Such is life in good stories, though. I hope he gets something good happening to him in the end. Beyond that, I was intrigued by the developments in... Astapor, was it? Yeah, I think that's the one. I'm keen to find out what happens next, and am starting to consider reading the book series from book two onwards, finally... but then, I'm halfway through The Uncanny X-Men and I don't want to quit now. Damn having so many very long things to read through at once.

Anyway, bring on the next episode!

It's done much better in the books (though in ADoD Stannis spends most of his time gritting his teeth while being stuck in snow and praying for miracles, but then again nothing really happened in that book). Everything that's not Lannister or Stark related has been cut and distilled to the point where they barely resemble the fairly self-contained adventures of most POV characters in the books.

Now, I wonder if they'd technically end it at Arya getting an axe to the head. And since all of the scene before/during it has this going on, people would probably think she did die. Hm. It would have to be super fast as not to ruin the effect.

In the book, Daenerys understood the language and asked for a translator to overhear information like you see in the scene. It is said that if you watch Emelia Clarke during the scene, that you can see that she understands the entire conversation, but this was not implicitly mentioned in the scene itself.

I thought it was tight. A lot better than the S2 opener. The wildling camp and giant was just wow. I wasn't ready for how dark the Tyrion/Tywin scene was and how ridiculous it is if you know how this book ends. And Ser Ian's voice as Barristan is just :omg: Unfortunately Aiden Gillen is still overacting. And the dinner in King's Landing made it too painfully clear that they were actors behind a camera. Not too sure why Stannis didn't smile when he saw Davos also. It was still a really great ep, I'm cautiously optimistic.

Margaery has a lot more... calculation... to her than in the books, or so it seems to me. I guess the books never really beat you over the head with it. It's a good direction though.

Ouch!
04-08-2013, 10:05 PM
Given a number of theories that have emerged since A Feast for Crows regarding the Tyrells and their longterm game plan, it would not surprise me if the only reason we haven't seen Margaery being more manipulative and calculating is simply a lack of (perceptive) point of view characters spending any great deal of time with her.

For the ways that the show has deviated from the books (characters being combined, removed, brought in late, etc.), I'm very much liking the direction that it's all going.

Rantz
04-08-2013, 10:13 PM
I agree. It's a bit early to say, but so far I think they're handling S3 better than S2 in terms of book-to-show changes.

I do think Margaery is as cunning in the books as she is in the show, but as often is the case, the show medium requires a whole lot less subtlety to bring out the characters.

I also enjoy the little memes coming out of the fandom. Or maybe I've just become to obsessed with this series. :T

I've watched the latest episode now that it's been broadcast and here are my general thoughts on it:

- It's good that it's more focused than the first episode. The first episode, like many premieres, recapped on pretty much every storyline in existence, while this one completely took out Dany and Stannis's storylines. It's better that way.

- Thoughts on the new characters. The Reeds are a welcome introduction; though their initial encounter with Bran and Osha was slightly unnecessary. They certainly didn't give much away and were pretty suspicious, no wonder Osha attacked Jojen. I feel like their presence this episode was mainly exposition, explaining to Bran what warging and sighting in. It'll be interesting to see how they develop past being a tutor to Bran.

- I quite liked Olenna Tyrell's performance actually. It complimented Margarey's softer side well as they questioned the clearly nervous Sansa. I really wish Sansa toughened up some more. Her demeanour doesn't move far from "stock-still nervousness"

- Talking about Margarey, I love her cunning manipulation. She rivals Petyr and Varys for their manipulation. Still, I do like her. She trumps Cersei anyway.

- Poor Theon. I don't think his escape is going to get far if you ask me.

- Any other thoughts? It's a good episode, with many open ended questions. What will happen to Arya? What will happen to Jaime and Brienne? It sets up well for the third episode.

OMG BRAN IS GROWING UP. HIS VOICE. PUBERTY. ;-;

I would protect Jojen Reed, if you know what I mean. ;)

I love Margaery. When she starts stroking the crossbow. xD

The scenes with Theon were very upsetting to me. I actually screamed at a few points.

Arya's story is as boring as ever, sadly. Except that reveal line was pretty bad ass.

Formalhaut--I don't understand why you're upset with Sansa being nervous. She knows she can't trust anyone, and if word gets back that she's been speaking ill of Joffrey, he'll punish her. It's understandable.

Lonely Paper Star

I don't know if it's just me, but Cat's and Arya's storylines in the show felt sped up (compared to the pace in ASOS).

Jinx
04-09-2013, 02:37 AM
I was going to say, that moment Cat is talking about praying of Jon Snow all night. That moment was not in the books, possibly setting up for R+L=J? later on in the show?

Formalhaut
04-09-2013, 02:41 AM
I'm not upset over it at all and the actress Sophie Turner does a great job of portraying her fear and nervousness. It's just that, I'm waiting for that key moment in the storyline (if at all) where she finds that inner resolve. Maybe I was perhaps to scathing in my first point, and for that I apologise Sam. Thinking back, that final word she says to Olenna "He's a monster" was my first glimpse of open(ish) resolve against Joffrey. I want to see more of that from Sansa as the season goes on. I don't expect much, she obviously can't trust anyone but I want to see that self-confidence and at least determination.

I don't know, maybe I'm in the wrong.

Margaery has a lot more...
...cleavage.

I mean, I thought she was pretty before and all, but on this episode I was like... damn. What a honey.

Anyway! I liked this episode well enough, but I can't shake the annoyance that they try to cram so much into one episode and I end up wishing I could just have them focus on a few characters in an episode instead of something like 50. But it's understandable, I suppose... I just find myself feeling that I'm losing any ability to connect with the characters because they've thrown so many into this season in a mere two episodes. If they increase the number of different POV characters much further then I wonder just how little time we'll spend on each one down the line.

Despite all that, I don't want less story... I want more episodes. :D

True enough!

Also, is it me or the Brave Companions aka the Bloody Mummers should've appeared by now? Maybe they should've been in Season 2. Maybe they were and I missed them. I guess it makes sense as on the whole they're kind of like... pointless. But, uh, Qyburn sure becomes A Thing.

Rantz
04-09-2013, 01:58 PM
I think it looks like they're being rationalised away, sort of. Robb found Qyburn "alone" in the last episode, and Brienne and Jamie seem to be captured by Boltons instead, going by this latest episode.

NOT ENOUGH DAVOS

YES. NOT ENOUGH GEORDIE NO FINGERS!

I actually really like Stannis and find him pretty smexy.

Anyhow, I've caught up so here are my EPIC! Well, not entirely epic really, the first episode was quite dull but Jon Snow is still hot so I'm happy. I must admit I seem to forget who certain characters are unless they're like the MAIN ones.

I love Cersei. I want to learn how to pout like her. The Tyrion moments of the first episode were the standouts for me though. Oh, and Daenerys bits.

2nd Ep. Looved it, very awesome. I like the new mystical things that are coming into it with Bran and Jojen. I'm growing to like Sansa a lot, I did miss Arya in it though and MMM MMM MMM GENDRY  what a beaut hubba hubba ding ding dong. Ahem, I'll stop drooling over the hotties now.... >.>
